You know what you need? A lyrical sucker punch to the face.
Re: Temporary Television
I didn't like it, but I don't think it sucked either or anything. Barry and (especially) Atlanta were much better IMO.Ryan wrote: ↑Tue Sep 18, 2018 11:06 am Had litchrully never heard of the show that just won Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series

Speaking of Amazon Prime though, Forever is definitely worth a shot. Only 8 eps, so only a 4 hour commitment. I really dug it.

Nice to see henry winkler get the nod.
In the first few episodes of Barry his character was just simply annoying. By the end of the season, he was amazing.

Funny you say this because I only saw the first three episodes so far (I liked it, wife didn't) and then saw he won and couldn't believe it.

The GF and I were looking for something to watch last night, and we watched episode 1.1 of 'Ozark'.
And here's what I've decided....all this talk of 'peak TV' is nonsense. Every prestige show is bleakness, coming off the Breaking Bad model. Are there any good new shows that aren't just dark and harrowing?
We ended up watching a couple of old episodes of The Office. Damn, Steve Carrell is a genius.

So many dramas about missing children, heinous murders. Must be getting old.
Wife and I are into a Spanish series "El Ministerio de Tiempo." Historical, good characters, nothing too grim.

Re: Temporary Television
Ozark is dark but it’s not bleak. I think there’s a huge difference. The characters are in a situation there is hope down the horizon. Stuff like The Walking Dead and even The Handmaid’s Tale is just kind of torture porn to me.

I just don't understand the attraction of watching horror or continuous violence.
And when it comes to dystopian hellscapes - I can handle a movie length version.
Like I said, must be getting old. There was a time when I watched Scarface for laughs.

Re: Temporary Television
Anyone else watched the Amazon show about last season's Manchester City called 'All Or Nothing'? I've just started it (about 2 episodes in now), and its really good. Narrated by Ben Kingsley.

Absolutely fascinating. I don't know how anyone can not like Pep after watching that show. Even though I barely understood him at times, his passion is just so infectious.

If you like this version..check out the All or Nothing All Blacks. I have pretty much done the entire All or Nothing sets on Prime (Michigan Football, Arizona Cardinals, Rams--love the Special Teams coach, Cowboys, All Blacks, etc.)

Yeah, I don't really give a shit about rugby, but I watched most of that All Blacks season. (And of course the MI version, which just confirmed things like Wilton Speight is kind of a prick.)

And I can't stop saying "Guys!' in Pep's accent, because he says it maybe, and I'm being conservative here, a MILLION TIMES an episode.

Re: Temporary Television
Just finished binging Please Like Me, and it was so, so good. it's an Australian comedy, 4 seasons (6-10 episodes per season). You could say it's a Girls-esque story of life of a group of 20-somethings, except that the characters are actually likeable, funny, and authentic. There are serious plot lines (depression, suicide, abortion, being gay) but played completely natural and not preachy or manipulative.
On Netflix in Canada but I'm pretty sure only Hulu in the US. Worth finding if you have a way to.
Also watched this summer:
Killing Eve - Sandra Oh and beautiful European actress i don't know. Serial killer and pursuer thriller. Nothing super special but well made.
Arrested Development - Rewatched from beginning, boy does season 4 and 5 blow, to the point that it kinda ruins the first 3 for me. No laughs.
Outcast - Showtime horror/mystery from Robert Kirkman (walking dead), with demon possessions instead of zombies. Don't usually like the genre but it definitely did a better job of telling a story about people than TWD.
Barry - HBO. Bill Hader never disappoints, some very funny supporting characters too.
Brockmire - Great character created by Hank Azaria, but kinda feeling a bit stale (halfway through season 2).
Succession - Looked forgettable, then a bunch of tv critics said it kept getting better and was a great show. I don't see what makes it better than a soap with swears.

Wife made me watch "God Friended Me."
A fine, fine example of fill in the blanks television combined with three egregious examples of what Roger Ebert called "the idiot plot" (whereby the only thing keeping the story moving forward is the fact that everyone involved is acting like a completely unaware idiot). 5 minutes in, you know every single thing that will happen in the show. Funny in a way - something like "Black Mirror" will be classified as Science Fiction, yet it is a hundred times more realistic than the banal cliches of a show like this one where good looking people face what should be life changing and traumatic situations that are solved in the next scene.

My wife watches pretty much every new show every season for at least one episode so I sit through a lot of dreck in September and October, but she's not even trying that one.

She liked the one season run of "Kevin Saves The World" which was the exact same story (except for location).
And the lead character has a podcast where he presents himself as an open-minded atheist. this gives him the opportunity to add voice overs that really don;t make any sense.
But, as I've said a few times - watching bad TV is just something you do when you're married.

And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
Re: Temporary Television
My wife wanted me to join her to watch a couple episodes of A Million Little Things. I was ok with that because I like Ron Livingston and James Roday. But the show is not good. (One saving grace - one of the lead actresses, Stephanie Szostak is gorgeous.)
