Right. This is actually more clever than most but it would be pretty easy to get your birthdate with those two pieces of information. (Unless they assume I was a senior in HS in 1984 instead of 1991)

If your goal is to merely get on base, Bill Joyce is your man.

The thing about Maddux was unless you were going to bang/signal where the catcher was positioning his glove I’m not sure how much it would’ve mattered.

I guess another problem would be when I say “i don’t mind the font” someone might rightfully ask “which one?” since EACH OF THE FOUR THINGS UP THERE LOOKS LIKE A DIFFERENT ONE WTF.

Yeah, I think that's my initial takeaway. Why don't the G's match each other and why don't the C's match each other?

Is it possible they wanted to maintain a feather as part of the logo? There's not a lot of paraphernalia with a standalone feather for them, but there is some.

Give them points for originality if nothing else. Something unique to Cleveland and not used by any other sports team. Could do a lot worse (and did for almost 100 years).

I gotta tell you, the local angle feels a little contrived. Like if you gotta explain it to outsiders, then it’s not an icon. If Clevelanders spend their days talking to each other about the guardian statues, then I’m happy to be wrong. It’s a perfectly good name.

I think MLB nicknames in general are underwhelming in terms of iconography, and if it works for Cleveland, it seems good enough. Outside of the animal nicknames (Cubs, Tigers, and the bird teams) and maybe Pirates, none of the other nicknames seem like things that you can immediately picture in your head separate from the teams. Hell, I root for a team basically called the Philadelphia Philadelphias. Guardians is at least as good as that.
