100% fine with this move. Johnson is a class act who still has flashes of almost brilliance, especially in the playoffs. Bolts might be done with sales for this off-season and though the entire third (really second) line is gone, effort is something that is easier to replace with youth.

Love having a full top 4 defense, another guy you felt was worth protecting in expansion and a literal half dozen prospects in the near-term pipeline and going out and signing two veteran D to multi-year deals. Love Drury's plan. Love Drury the GM.

Thought you were going to keep going with this, as they had the #5 pick, as well. Then another guy went, like, 24th in the first.

This has been a 'sort by new' kind of day. I think I read that 60 signings were announced in the first 2 hours of free agency. It's been hard to keep up.

I've been hoping for the Pens and Oilers to sign or trade for a shiny new goalie like Raanta or Mrazek or Kuemper. Nothing doing yet. Kuemper is still with Arizona, so I guess a trade could happen, but just about every free-agent goalie of note has already signed elsewhere.

Most interesting move of the day for me is the Ethan Bear/Warren Foegele trade. Defenseman for a forward. Probably a good hockey trade, but it's the kind that makes me like the Oilers just a little less. I really like Bear, but I know that I probably overrate him.

And man, the Hurricanes, Flyers, and Blue Jackets are going to be unrecognizable next year.

Anyway, hello, Swamp. I hope that free agency is treating your teams well. The Sabres were able to get a first and a second for Ristolainen, so everything is great in Buffalo, right?

We now have an offseason thread!
I wasn't around when the Oilers traded Caleb Jones for Duncan Keith, so it's almost like it didn't happen, right?

His on-ice decline is bad enough. But after all that I've read about the Blackhawks this year, I don't think I want anybody in a leadership position on that 2010 team anywhere near a team that I care about.

Josh Ho-Sang signs a tryout contract with Toronto. Really rooting for this guy, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I always feel bad for guys who are that good at age 15 or 16, then get surpassed by their peers.

The Devils just gave away Will Butcher to Buffalo. What happened there? Just not as good as advertised? I thought he was good his rookie year, then I never heard about him again.

Oof. Yeah. Granted exceptional status in the CHL, then just...never got to the next level. Look at all of the other players on that list. Tavares, McDavid, Ekblad, Shane Wright, etc. And then there's Day. 23 years old and nowhere near the NHL.

Earlier today, I read that Roland McKeown signed with Colorado. I hadn't heard his name in years. He was on that same Toronto Marlboros team as McDavid, Ho-Sang, and Sam Bennett. Picked #2 overall in the 2012 OHL draft. Still hasn't played in the NHL. Played in Sweden last year.

That feels like a particular kind of burden to carry around with you.

I wrote about Burke's book in another thread. It goes against everything I think and believe in, yet I found it wildly entertaining. And yeah, his story of drafting the Sedins is even wilder than I had remembered.

Arizona trades Kuemper to Colorado for a first-rounder and Conor Timmins. Excellent trade by Arizona. Wait until everybody else is off the market, then strike. (The Oilers and Pens are effed.)

Seattle has yet to play a game yet are going into the season with a better goalie tandem than VGK.

So works out to Brenden Dillon to get Vitek back from Seattle after a week of being a Kraken..hope he did not lease a place or start moving stuff west.

Dillon ~1.1M (3M next year and 2M the year after)
Vitek is $750K and Free Agent next year

Caps have some Caps challenges but this should help a bit and fixes the goalie depth.

Jones can occasionally stand on his head and look like an all-star - then give up 5 soft ones in his next game.

Darren Helm to Colorado on a cheap one-year deal. I've been overrating Helm ever since I saw him have one good game 10 years ago. Has he had any more since then?

I see Georgiev wants out of New York. Maybe the Rangers are still spooked by Tom Wilson's shadow and will trade Georgiev to Edmonton for Kassian.

So many hockey-related tabs open in Firefox. Just waiting for something to happen, but I know nothing will. Day 2 of free agency is such a let-down. Like, I expect every roster to be filled out right now.

I don't know if the pipeline is still open without Gorton, but Arizona would make some sense too. I know a certain Rangers fan who thinks Christian Dvorak is on one of the best contracts in the entire league.

My ears perked up when I heard Dvorak's name connected to the Penguins last week. He's one of several Coyotes I like in theory, but I never see him play.

And I actually like that Corey Perry signing for Tampa.

Very, very small chance of that unless you were looking for someone to win an obscene number of face-offs in one game. I do like this note from his NHL.com bio.
He became the first player in NHL history to score five playoff goals before scoring a regular-season goal.
Helm (just posted 89 points over 5 years for a mere $19.25 million) and Glendening leaving (Dallas) means Danny DeKeyser is the last Ken Holland guy on the roster, at a quick glance. While they all had their roles and were often effective in them, this does not really sadden me.

I can understand that. The Oilers are just now seeing the light at the end of the Chiarelli tunnel, which is giving Holland enough room to give out big deals. I don't think I'm ever going to feel comfortable about this team.

For the record, I think Zach Hyman is exactly what they need, but I hope he ages gracefully. And Cody Ceci had a very good year in Pittsburgh. He's better than his reputation, but that contract worries me.

Solid inexpensive backup in Craig Anderson to Buffalo. 19 year NHL vet. 692 Games.
