flaco - a baby and a 10th grader. Gonna be an interesting winter, we'll need some reports.

Just back from a 12-day family vacation through the (american) Rockies, Utah, Arizona, NM. I was there as a kid but our kids haven't been so we figured let's just make them as hot as possible this summer (to be fair, it was actually hotter in Buffalo while we were out there - dodged that one).

Utah is so bizarre/cool. Arches in particular.

I am / we are now completely and utterly broke. but i guess YOLO, baby.

There's a local facebook group chat here about where to get north shore roast beef and so far the answer is "you have to go back to Boston".

oh most definitely - we came in on I-70 (and as it turns out we just missed a mudslide by maybe 4-5 minutes just outside Glenwood Springs that detoured traffic....uh, a long way).

that area west of Grand Junction into Utah is.... man. desolate. wild. weird.

we stayed in Moab and/but took the scenic route 128 down there instead of 191 and honestly the last ~45 minutes of that drive were almost as spectacular as the NP itself. Great call*.

Same. We leave this weekend. Thanks for the recommendations. Will use. Will let you know how the respiratory droplets taste.

Hopeful to be outside most of the time. Bikes. Grill. Beach. Pass out. Repeat.

I've gotten very slack on protections. Gonna be really hard to get the family back into that mindset.

Just scheduled a weekend trip to Park City, UT at the end of August. The GF's daughter, daughter's boyfriend, and his father are going to do this gravel bike race:

Here's the thing...I'm getting tempted to try to rent a gravel bike and do the 'mini' (35 miles) race myself.

So do your tires just spin in the gravel sometimes (often?), when you lose traction? I’ve never seen gravel racing, but it sounds like it could be exhausting.

So wife and I are headed to the Borderland Music Festival in September (it's in East Aurora, NY, which is just outside Buffalo).

Outside of Niagara Falls State Park, what's to do in Buffalo? Am I going to have a good time? Is there like, so much to do that we may as well bag one of the days at the festival?

Gravel biking is basically road racing on dirt roads, as opposed to riding on single-track/mountain bike trails. The bikes are beefed up road bikes...bigger tires/knobbies/disc brakes/drop bars.

The biggest event (Unbound Gravel) happened about a month ago, with former Pro rider Ian Boswell riding 200 miles in 10 1/4 hours.

It's been [checks watch] 23 years since I've lived in Buffalo, so I'm not much help. If you are going to Niagara Falls, definitely hit the Canadian side (if they are letting us in the country again), US side is bullshit. I've heard they've done a tremendous job restoring downtown Buffalo. Even in my 4 years, they did a lot to start turning it around.
