This entire charade is so fucking frustrating. It reminds me again and again that people intentionally jump to the most politically advantageous angle and exploit it for gain when there's no there there.

Muslim woman criticizes Israel? ANTI SEMITISM. HOW DARE SHE. Nevermind the antisemitism coming from inside the White House and throughout the GOP base. The brown not Christian woman said something I don't like! It's the Lenten season! Christ is watching!

And this is on a broad, sweeping scale. People face this kind of direct "miscommunication" daily on smaller scales. Say something where context is completely misrepresented and a person gets extremely angry over words? BURN THAT PERSON NOW. I'VE BEEN INSULTED.

I fucking hate America sometimes.

I’ll second (third?) these posts and add that for Pelosi and the House leadership to even think about a resolution condemning Omar at the same time she is being subject to horrific Islamophobic smears and terroristic threats from GOP politicians is infuriating.

And, look, I went and really looked at what Omar has said over the years and recently and frankly, it's problematic. She has danced around, depending on the audience about the boycott issue, and she's been pretty soft (at times) about promoting a 2-state solution (spending a bunch of time painting Israel as a rough equivalent to S. Africa.)

She had a chance to get out front and lead on this issue, speaking truth to power but being a positive voice for an actual peaceful resolution. She didn't do that. She's a freshman and hopefully she learns.

But FFS, the House Dems are fucking morons on this. Like I said, you close the doors, you shout it out, you squash it, you emerge from the room united.

A fucking floor vote. Idiots.

While trump cozies up to autocrats from around the world, Netanyahu does the same - with the particularly galling twist that he includes openly anti-semitic regimes in his list of friends of Israel.

I don’t know about Trump, but Netanyahu has been very close to the Kushner family for decades now (see below), all of which renders the idea of Jared leading Middle East policy even more of a joke.

Apple makes sense because of how much money they have stored overseas, but I'll grant that they exert a lot less influence and power over everyday Americans than Amazon, Google and Facebook do.

Having a lot of money isn't really a legal justification for breaking up a company. That requires their having significant market power so that they are immune from normal competition.

Good piece here on Howard Schultz and his relationship with his alma mater (Northern Michigan University). This was a story I was expecting to come out sooner or later since it's the thing that Yoopers are most likely to discuss where Schultz is concerned, but it's also telling that the one place where Schultz's message would be likely to resonate is a place that is rural, but which has historically voted blue only to switch to supporting the GOP over the last couple of decades (there are a lot of these places in the Midwest) and they absolutely fucking loathe Schultz.

Without knowing too much about UK politics, what are the repercussions if the House of Commons and the government just chooses to ignore the referendum and refuses to implement Brexit?

I suspect the government would be dissolved and new elections held, but then the issue falls on the new government at that point, which would probably be elected with the mandate to reject Brexit. Seems like they've discovered the hard way how minority rule actually works like we have here.

The last election they had in 2017 was supposed to give the Tories the big majority. Like just about everything else that Theresa May has touched, it failed.

At least Corbyn has finally come out in favour of a second referendum... which means that the only leader in the UK who rivals Theresa May for being hated and not trusted will have to be elected in order to get a 2nd referendum.

And if there is another election, I figure there's no way the Conservatives keep May as their leader. Which would mean a further leadership campaign. Meanwhile, the E.U. is under no obligation to make life easy for the U.K. Would they just tear up all agreements on March 29? (Doubtful, but still...)

She (May) said the government would table a motion, so that MPs can debate on Wednesday whether the UK should leave the EU without a deal on 29 March, and that she would offer her MPs a free vote on that decision.

There will then be another vote on Thursday, on whether to request an extension to article 50.

It seems inconceivable that the MPs would vote to leave the EU without any agreements in place. But so, so much of what has happened over there would have seemed inconceivable 4 years ago.

Is there anything to "implement"? I think the UK formally initiated the withdrawal process (Article 50) two years ago, and unless an alternate deal is reached, or every EU state agrees otherwise, the EU treaties automatically cease to apply to the UK on March 29.
