Moose ain't nothing to fuck with. Arguably the most dangerous animal to encounter in the woods in the eastern U.S. Mrs. Sabo and I saw one in the Algonquin Provincial Park when we vacationed there years ago, and DAMN was it big.

We (my parents) have a cabin just north of the Mirror Lake area. It's like a 7 hour drive for me, so I don't get there too often. Might go for Thanksgiving though.

Right by Christmas Meadows. Staked out a few mornings in the meadow to see if I could find any moose or elk but struck out. Still quite pretty though.

Saw some gulls resting on probably the last ice island of the spring (I hope) on the Charles River, and thought it was kinda like the famous lonely polar bear on ice photograph and then the birds flew away when I tried to take a picture.

I cashed in some United Airlines miles a few weeks ago and got a Nikon Coolpix P900 camera. I got this camera mostly because it has an 83x optical zoom, which is a cheap and easy way to get into bird photography. A photojournalist friend of mine has one and raved about the camera's capabilities.
I took it out to the Towpath Trail in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park yesterday afternoon to give it a test run. I learned a couple of really important lessons:
1. Bird photography is hard as fuck.
2. Bird photography requires a ton of patience.
3. I really need to buy a pistol-grip camera mount.
That said, I took about 40 pictures, but only a couple turned out halfway decent.
These are a couple of midland painted turtles, which are very common in the park. The trail follows the old Ohio and Erie Canal, and there are several sections of the canal that still has water. The turtles thrive in that environment.

Those birds should be easier to shoot because they stand still for long periods of time.

Thanks, guys. I'll post anything that turns out reasonably well from my future photo shoots. I'm taking two weeks off in October and plan on a couple of photo excursions as long as the weather cooperates.

So, looking to get into photography a little more seriously and in the market for a camera.
Thinking of a DSLR, something in the "dedicated hobbyist" range. Don't want to break the bank, but something that could pass for borderline professional if I figure out what I'm doing.
Also looking for something with video capability as well.
So, questions:
- What's a reasonable price range based on the above?
- Any brands/specific models to recommend?
- What other basic equipment should I be looking at to start? Lenses, etc., plus other gear like a bag/strap...
- Any recommended books/courses? I have a few of the standard Dummies guides, but wondering if there's anything else that would be a good intro.
- Anything else to consider?
