I seemed to miss a lot of good shows on Comedy Central while they were on for some reason, but finally catching up to Review with Andy Daly and it's hysterical.

So my wife's been having a lot of pain this week - think she badly pinched something in her neck - she's taken advil, tylenol, naproxen and even had her Dr prescribe heavy duty shit to get her to be able to sleep...

Nothing's really worked. I suggested she try edibles. My wife's been high once since university, so gave her a small piece. Half hour later, giddy and not noticing the pain.

Lengthy introduction to the fact that she wanted to watch something funny. Put on "Thunder Force" the latest Melissa McCarthy vehicle on Netflix. And my god, it's beyond belief bad. Like half an hour in and a stoned woman who'd earlier previously laughed at Rory McIlroy missing a putt couldn't take it.

Shockingly bad.

But she's happy downstairs talking back to the screen as she watches "Friends."

I got my wife to try edibles with me after a trip to Colorado.

They made her nauseous and head-spinny for a full day and a half. Some kind of reaction to an anti-depressant we think.

So much for that idea.

I enjoyed the Biggie Smalls doc. I was a very casual fan so I'm not sure what people who know more about him would think. There was a really interesting thing with his old jazz musician friend comparing his rapping style to a jazz drummer.

Just started, This is a Robbery, which is about the Isabella Stewart art robbery. 90's EdRomero was too interested in those shitty Boston teams and investing in Upper Deck cards, so this is another topic I know nothing about. First episode was interesting and with so many Boston accents (and disgraced Boston Globe names).

A law school friend is featured in this. Shocked the hell out of me when I watched the trailer. Great guy, but never kept in touch. Really threw me seeing him with a greying beard as he was a clean cut baby faced kid straight out of college. Crosspost in Things that make me feel old!

If you are in the mood for something stupid and crude, Eric Andre's "Bad Trips" has a couple of scenes that made it hard for me to breathe. (My wife wet her pants)
Watched it last night. Like a poor man's Borat. The plot is super weak, but not the point. Just a flimsy script to tie together a series of crowd-reaction pranks. There were a couple scenes that had me bursting out laughing. Just so absurd. Not a good movie, but I had fun watching it. I liked the credits, where they showed the reveal to the the bystanders who became part of the movie and showed some unused scenes. If you watch it, stick around through the credits.

Speaking of Borat, I listened to an interview with the director of the recent Borat. Interesting hearing how they make the movie. The interactions with random people are way more scripted than I ever could imagine. They write scripts for a variety of possible responses people could have, and Cohen memorizes numerous potential scripts, and they even rehearse with different expected responses. They will attempt a scripted scene with numerous people until someone follows one of their expected responses. I sort of assumed they got reactions and shaped the movie around what people said or did, but the plots are pre-written and planned, and they film until they get what they want.

Not being nitpicky, but is this on Netflix in CAN?

It's a Hulu joint down here... I was bummed, because we let that one go awhile back and I really wanted to check this one out based off this rec and the trailer on YouTube.

I watched "I Don't Feel At Home in this World Anymore" earlier today on Netflix (Melanie Lynskey, Elijah Wood).

It wasn't great by any stretch, but it wasn't bad either. 3 out of 5 stars.

Yeah, Netflix up here.

Just watched The Miami Showband Massacre a documentary about an Irish band that was, well, massacred during the worst of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

A bit long, and some of the conclusions are unprovable, but fascinating anyway, and it reminded me of my childhood, when Northern Ireland was one of the world's violent hotspots.

I find it to be good overall with some fantastic episodes. Just finished episode 2 of season 2. Didn't like the first episode, and the second one took a while to get going but was okay. But I've been told that greatness awaits around the corner.

An issue for me is that Aziz Ansari is a terrible actor. His character is so likeable though that it covers for a lot of his failings.
Watching the first episode of season 3 and it's like I'm back in college watching pretentious film major bullshit. Usually I get annoyed at myself when I swamp while watching tv, but I'm not missing much with this extended shot of a bunch of books on a shelf -- see, they're books about Africa which was shows how proud they are of their culture.

It's funny, heavy, and extremely creative. It's not so much a standup as it is performative art.

I definitely liked him, and Master of None. Haven't gone back post his #metoo allegations, which frankly are pretty far away from Spacey on that spectrum, but still icky. Not sure if I'll watch the Lena Waithe season.

I wanted to like it, and some of the skits were funny. I do think it'd be a lot better stoned. It's a skit show that is very far down the silly and absurd road, which I like, but I found a lot of the skits more annoying than funny.
