The guy who wrote the article was the person Snyder sued when he was at the City Paper.
Snyder has screwed this up every way. I was thinking the other way how he could have handled it with class and still not change it. Tough but could have pulled it off.
Speaking points
1.) The team name has a long history and was not introduced with malice towards native Americans.
2.) There is a very vocal fan base (which may be a majority) that supports the team and its name.
3.) The issues is not clear to me at this time that all native americans feel this name is derogatory. There is a clear number of individuals and groups that do feel the name is not appropriate, but there are lots of
4.) No decision with fan-base and financial implications of this nature should be made quickly or without detailed study.
5.) This organization needs to continue to understand the issue, engage in a respectful and meaningful conversation with appropriate parties, and understand the implications of keeping or changing our team name. There is no current time table for a decision as I don't want to put an artificial time frame on making a decision.
Unfortunately, Snyder has already boxed himself into a corner. Had he not done repeatedly terrible PR moves (on this and other issues), he could have taken the moral high road on an issue and drop the name. Would not even have to pickup a nickname. Just be Washington Football. Leave some native american imagery on the uniform and logos, and let the fans call them the Redskins, but not use that name as part of the official stance. He could even keep and defend the Redskins trademarks (tweak the fight song, etc.), but just not use it.

Re: This 'Redskins' Thing
Part of the Redskins fight song translates to "Sieg Heil" in German (Hail Victory), so when they inevitably have to change the name here in the next few years, they're probably better off just scrapping that thing from the bolts up.

Isn't Michigan's fight song called "Hail to the Victors"?

It is. Which Google says translates to "Heil dem Sieger". To my knowledge, the Third Reich didn't use that as a war cry.AB_skin_test wrote:Isn't Michigan's fight song called "Hail to the Victors"?

People talk about Snyder's background in marketing and beat him up because "he should know how to communicate, he made his fortune in marketing and advertising!"
The problem with that is simple: marketers often don't have one clue about public relations. They are two EXTREMELY different areas. I know this may sound like splitting hairs to some, but trust me, it's not.
As you just laid out, there are ways to handle public relations, even what we call "crisis communications" and then... well, then there are idiots like Snyder that think he can throw up a bunch of bullshit (marketing) to sway the masses and achieve a desired result. The HUGE problem with that approach is, well... basic scrutiny of his bullshit. It takes almost zero effort to call him on his bullshit, because he thinks he can get by with gimmicks. He's intellectually lazy.
And like a lot of marketers, because they've gotten over (in their minds) on a lot of people, they tend to think everyone is stupid.

Re: This 'Redskins' Thing
That's because RG3 was auditioning for the role of Black Timmy and needed a replacement.

That's the beauty of South Park over an animated show. The numbers may have changed, but I once saw an interview saying they can make an episode in something like 6 days, where The Simpsons takes 9 months. This allows South Park to make an episode that is extremely topical, while the Simpsons can't.Pruitt wrote:

However, I also know that they basically generate most of the scripts/themes over a week long outing with a bunch of friend (I have heard interviews with Bill Hader about this)

Sure I hate government overreach, but this is fucking hilarious:
FCC considering move to ban NFL Redskins team name
(Reuters) - The Federal Communications Commission is considering whether to punish broadcasters for using the moniker of the Washington NFL team, the Redskins, a word many consider a slur to Native Americans, the agency's chairman indicated on Tuesday.
…
The FCC could formally deem use of the team name to be indecent, and thus impose a de facto ban on it on over-the-air television and radio.

Serious question. Is there any kind of similar FCC ban on the N word? If not I don't see how this has a leg to stand on.

If someone tried to move the Jags to Jackson and name them the N******, does the FCC have a say in that?

They do, under the "obscenity" category.

So now they are suing the Native Americans. I know this is probably a technical legal approach that swamp folks with JDs can explain, but once again from a PR stand point, I would spin this as "Dan Snyder is now suing the Native Americans because he respects them so much to name his team after them."

Just in time for Thanksgiving. But Judge Gerald Bruce Lee ruled Tuesday that federal law allows the Redskins to sue the Native Americans.

There was a bonus question at trivia last night about colleges with nicknames that had "X" in them, and ND was on there. I went all sorts of uber-nerd and informed them of their mistake.
