In my experience, that's very true, Syb. As an old dude who smoked a lot of pot in the 70s and 80s, then it was often a social thing as you shared a joint with friends and didn't get too stoned. I've only smoked on rare occasions in recent years, but holy cow, it is wayyy stronger, nowadays.
Yup. My sister has a card and I'm blown away everytime I go out there. I'm a high quantity-low quality smoker, but I hold my own with that stuff.

Only 36 in marijuana according to the ACS. Plus many people ingest in manners other than through an unfiltered joint.

Since isn't really much in terms of a dark side, theres this kind of 60s nostalgia around use... but id bet that the "average" user is a lot closer to a cigarette smoker than the kind of social user sancarlos references. Id like to see some research on that. Also agree that filters (or lack of) probably even out the inhaled carcinogens even if there are less chemical additives. I have seen a lot more of the vaporizers though, even a store (VulcanVape) right near my house. A couple guys swear by it but it seems like a bit too much apparatus for me. Smoking a joint shouldn't be that hard.

Couldn't find a source, but heard on local news (CPR) the other day that the average CO pot buyer only smoked a joint a week.

After signing with the Blue Jays in August of 2011 and receiving a $2 million signing bonus, the young left-hander [Daniel Norris] purchased a Volkswagen microbus and a couple of surfboards, and then stashed the rest away for the future.
Waiting for the new strains I guess.

What does Norris know about surfing, he's from fucking Tennessee!

(That line from Apocalypse Now always bugged me; there are plenty of surfers and surfing in New Jersey.)

Saw this come up on my Groupon e-mail. Dry herb vaporizer? Is this for smoking pot, or is there some other use? It comes with various oils, including tobacco flavored oil, yet it says it is odorless and flavorless. So confused.

Legal Pot in the US Is Crippling Mexican Cartels (And, the DEA Doesn't Like it)
Former DEA senior intelligence specialist Sean Dunagan told VICE News that, although it’s too early to verify the numbers: “Anything to establish a regulated legal market will necessarily cut into those profits. And it won’t be a viable business for the Mexican cartels — the same way bootleggers disappeared after prohibition fell.”

DEA chief of operations James Capra told senators this January that legalization "scares us" and is "reckless and irresponsible." And the agency is continuing to crack down on marijuana.

Given the DEA’s historic relationship with the Sinaloa cartel, and the agency’s fury over legalized marijuana, it almost seems like the DEA wants to crush the legal weed market in order to protect the interests of their cartel friends. Almost.

“The DEA doesn’t want the drug war to end,” said Nelson, when asked about a possible connection between the agency’s hatred of legal pot and its buddies in Sinaloa. “If it ends, they don’t get their toys and their budgets. Once it ends, they aren’t going to have the kind of influence in foreign government. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but where there’s smoke there’s probably fire.”

It would appear that the cheapest way to obtain pot in Denver is to work for Hertz or Avis or some other rental car agency... Kind of funny, but makes sense if you think about it. Out-of-stater flies into Colorado for a visit, enjoys some legal ganja - but what to do with the leftovers when it's time to go?...
Denver International Airport rental cars appear to be increasingly used as a marijuana dumping ground for travelers. People who want to avoid illegally bringing pot into the airport simply leave it in the car or offer it to the car rental agencies, one Avis Rent A Car airport agent said today.

I've worked at my current company for nearly 9.5 years. Now that we've merged with another one, we're required to take a test by 8/31. I'm not too nervous since that's plenty of time to stop for me to detox, but I've been an everyday user for the past 7+ years and I ain't too happy about it. You gotta be on drugs to put up with what I do on a daily basis.

I've been coming across an interesting phenomenon with drug testing. I'm doing legal compliance consulting, and I had 3 clients in one week call about positive marijuana tests. In all 3 instances, the employer (my client) wanted to keep the employee despite the positive test. One wanted to put the guy on probation and retest him in 6 months. The other two didn't even want to tell the employees to stop. You have to wonder why they bother testing, but one said they were just concerned with cocaine, heroin and "harder" drugs. Definitely seeing a huge shift in the acceptance of marijuana use.

It's absurd that they even care in a job like mine. And it's complete BS that I could do coke or herion the week of and still be OK.

That said, it stores in your fat so I've already started eating healthier and exercising. Down 5 pounds already, so by the end of August, I'll probably look and feel the best I have in forever. I already feel amazing just eating so much better. (quinoa enchilada bake and spaghetti squash pad thai, ftw!)

I've been spending this past week in Croatia on The Yacht Week. My crew was 4 folks from Seattle and me island hopping and partying. /endbragging

Anyhoo, the dudes are my age and paid because of the legalization of marijuana in Washington. Just chatting with then about it I'm half tempted to shitcan this military gig, move to Seattle, and learn how to grow. They have licensing for so many large plants and sell what they grow to the pharmaceutical industry. And one guy is in charge of the largest edible distribution sectors the state. I'm thoroughly impressed with how these guys do their thing. They are going to be millionaires. I just have that feeling.

(Oh, and sidenote, the amount and types of drugs they brought with them to Croatia is as elaborate as it is impressive.)

Fuck, I just want to do drugs.

Curious to hear what thy had, and if they flew in with it, or picked it up in Croatia. Buying drugs in a foreign country scares the crap out of me. Smuggling it through Customs does too. I've been in the holding cells.

Coke, Molly (specifically a high end variant called 'bugatti'), acid (via laced altoids), bubble hash, speed, xanax, and adderall. Plus, they had oil based marijuana they used in their vapor pen and blunts packaged via resealed cigarello packs.

Just insane. They brought this all with them.

Jesus, I want to party wit those guys. At least me 10 years ago did. Eh, fuck it. I'll rage for a weekend. I'd probably pass on the Molly. Ecstasy was cool, but Molly (from what I've read) often isn't MDMA. Does Adderall work as speed? My old roommate was ADHD as fuck, and went on Adderall because he knew he'd abuse anything abusable. I took one once for the fuck of it, and was so insanely focused, I couldn't accomplish anything. Ritalin, OTOH, is better than Coke IMO. Law school buddy would use a mortar and pestle to crush and snort. Very similar to Coke, but a very steady and long lasting high. No constant need to keep doing more, and no sudden onset of needing to shit. You need a laxative, I recommend a dozen lines. But that is probably whatever it is cut with, huh?

They wanted me to party with them. They were kind of sad I couldn't. I had to stick to boring alcohol. I only drank one night though when we went to this nightclub and bottle service was actually worth it.

Adderall worked as a stay focused drug so that you could keep drinking all night and not get drowsy. Molly, I thought, was pure MDMA and just the sickest high/trip for colors and sounds. That's why all the electronic music kids are into it.

The funniest thing this week was the one guy giving an altoid to our skipper. I laughed my ass off. Sure we could have probably died, but we didn't find out until way after the fact. All of us passengers crashed out due to rough seas and being tired from the night prior. We get to port to find out that we lost our dingy in the transit and he took an hour to 'meditate' during the 5 hour journey. He had no idea he was drugged.

My bad, it is Concerta my old roommate went on, knowing he would abuse any other ADD drug. Did some research, and apparently Adderall is even more abused than Ritalin. And who the fuck would secretly dose their skipper with LSD? Dosing someone without their knowledge is seriously fucked up, especially with a hallucinogen. But I still want to party with those guys.

To save time at the party, eat the second one first. This will make so much sense shortly thereafter that you will tell everyone your secret tip, most likely several times.

In yesterday's Seattle Times, there was a color ad for these:

Image

The picture was of your typical mid-30, attractive women, having lunch and drinking white wine. The copy basically said "enhance the fun!".

The best part was the way they called it a "elevated pleasurable experience". I guess saying "high as a kite" doesn't sound so good in the Sunday paper.

Its a whole new world...

The marketing of legal marijauna has fascinated me since the '70s when I hung with people who grew up in the hills of northern California. This topic can lead to wild fantasies, especially since it was always discussed while smoking.

My own thoughts on marketing dope were always more boring than theirs. Perhaps because unlike them, I didn't presume marijauna legalization would follow a successful cultural revolution. It seems to me that the real challenge is to legitimize a particular brand of dope, given that so much has been done to delegitimize everything associated with it. So the marketing can't have any of the traditional associations with shady, scruffy pot heads. My guess has always been that the ads will look like liquor ads. Smooth and upscale, attractive people having a good time. Not Keith Richards or 50 Cent extolling some fabulous pot brand on TV.

The open question to me was the use of celebrities. If you could get a mainstream celebrity or two to be the face of your dope product, this would go a long way towards legitimizing it.

Who would do it? No idea -- as this would risk the celebrity's brand. And risk takers probably probably aren't going to be mainstream enough to fit this ad concept. Even if the target market is people in their 20s and 30s, I think older people would work well in advertisements, as they would work better at making something like this seem legitimate and socially acceptable. My first two asks would be Patrick Stewart and Sandra Bullock. But you might have to drop deep into B list territory to get someone to say yes.
