Per Netflix, I watched the first disc of season one of "Girls" tonight. No that's not the confession...it was pretty good. The confession is I dated a girl very close to the Hannah character for a few years. Not like her 'boyfriend' dates her on the show but as an actual boyfriend. My girl had nicer breasts and was smarter, but that's pretty much her. I think the show is well done but it was hard to watch sometimes...

I wouldn't have done it. It saved me the awkwardness of explaining to people that their narcissism posing as activism routine is ridiculous.

Research into ALS is something I feel strongly about... so this ice water thing doesn't bother me.

HOWEVER, I fully get your point, and if this was being done for a charity that doesn't resonate with me, I'd also be profoundly irritated by the "look at me" aspect of this.

Given that they've quadrupled their fundraising and it's because of this, I can't get annoyed.

If it was simply for "awareness" then I may feel differently. But there's an actual tangible positive that's come from this. You can't say that about a lot of internet attention-seeking things for causes.

Research into all diseases is where I'm coming from. In my mind one isn't greater than another. It's why I absolutely hate the marriage of the NFL and breast cancer. They have always done that as a way to get more females interested in football by appealing to an emotional aspect that affects so many women. It's disgusting to me. Exactly. Oddly enough, my mom has Lupus. I wouldn't do the challenge then either. I'd just retort "Do you know how much money I've donated to Lupus over the years without making a spectacle of myself to show off for others?"

It reminds me of this time when I was watching a Red Wings game and the play by play guy had casually mentioned that Steve Yzerman takes a large portion of his yearly salary and donates it anonymously to a particular charity. It made me think "I need to be more like Steve Yzerman." No glitz. No glamour. Just a flat out donation.

And initially I wasn't really annoyed with this. It seemed fine. Donate $100 and dump water on yourself. That's a substantial donation and lots of people doing it will raise lots of money.

Then I realized it's only $10 if you douse yourself with water -- hence the 'challenge.' That's fucking lame. Sure, every penny counts and giving to charity is a big deal, but when I see millionaires (and billionaires) doing this, it's to prop up their ego, not bring awareness.

Shit...every month and every week (almost every day) has some form of awareness associated with it. I always joke about "almost forgetting that November is Alheimers Awareness Month" every year. Maybe they need to make a challenge and have it go viral?

And we've all had someone in our lives die from something horrible or are living with someone horrible. I can certainly empathize. Awareness and donations are excellent. But eventually you reach a tipping point where it goes from something altruistic to "Look at me! I'm wet and I donated money!" Fuck off, you narcissist.

We are taught from a young age that the highest form of charity - the type of giving that truly pleases God - is that which is anonymous. In fact, there are parables in Judaism that demonstrate that it is shameful for one who is making a donation to allow the person receiving the aid to know the source.

Obviously, we live in a very imperfect world (and I have seen nameplates with donor's names on the washrooms of religious schools), and while every penny does count, the "me, me, me" aspect of a campaign like this one does rankle.

I generally agree with that, and while I find the rash of videos a bit annoying, I think it was a brilliant bit of social engineering on someone's part. They truly got how to build a grassroots viral campaign that actually does some good. So yeah - good for them.

I'm with Johnnie on this. First, I thought the bucket dump was in lieu of paying, and I couldn't understand why everyone was showing off their refusal to pay $100 to a charity. I've also seen celebrities and the NY Jets do this, and it feels more like a personal publicity stunt than anything else. The amazing part, this started as a general charity of your choice thing, and some guy with ALS turned it into a Boston Area ALS fund thing, and it caught on nationwide as being an ALS thing. I think ALS is as good a cause as any, it is the disease that scares me the most, and from what I understand, they have made some real progress with stemcell therapies.

I do feel like at least half of the friends who have posted themselves dumping ice buckets were trying to join the cool kids. Some seem sincere, and I am biased against people who were followers in high school pulling the bucket stunt. I see this as the current version of planking, Tebowing... It just amazes me how fast a viral meme spreads, and the creator can make millions of people do the same thing.

People are craving attention and want to be trendy. I'm talking about their sheeple mindset and absolute need to show others "I can be trendy to!" You only care about the monetary bottom line. We're arguing different points.

Because the beneficiary is for a good cause, at the very least I can say it is much better than some garbage erotica novel or questionable fashion accessory. This is no different than sheeple wearing Livestrong bracelets. Let's see how much they care about ALS in 6 months.

Fair point. And again, I'm not begrudging that. When you get people to buy into a trend someone will get a windfall from it.

And what the fuck does CrossFit have to do with any of it? When they put together their workout fundraisers (especially for Kevin Ogar, Google it), I didn't donate either. I like to go to the gym, lift, and do the workout of the day. And for those wanting to get less sedentary I vouch that it will get you into shape. I'm not some corporate shill constantly going on the defensivein support of HQ.

I'm still trying to figure out the CrossFit thing on my end and the only thing I think of is the time last October I wore pink. Thinking back, I remember posting about it on my feed and being called a hypocrite by BFJ for doing it. Just know, I didn't donate to breast cancer research and I was effectively peer pressured to at least dress silly. I gave in. It was hokey. Whatever.

(However, I can't find the Facebook post I made regarding it. Does Facebook just delete random shit?)
