Degen: Vote "No!"
To the International Olympic Committee’s chagrin, this limping-along Calgary bid is actually the sturdiest one left in the mix. Organizers in Switzerland, Japan and Austria threw in the towel, as Oslo did in 2022, leaving that Games to go to not-very-wintery Beijing. Stockholm is on the shortlist, but its municipal government has pledged not to fund it at all; Italy’s leaders have pledged no federal money for its joint bid for Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Should Calgary 2026 survive the plebiscite, it could well win hosting rights by default.

I've been a no since Day 1. Even before all this craziness.

How can an Olympic bid not include a new arena?

Yes 44%
No 56%
Not even close. Bid plan was an embarrassment.

Sounds like it.

Good thinking by Calgarians. I really didn't figure your Mayor was so run of the mill when it comes to this sort of thing.

From Macleans:
There was ample cause for skepticism elsewhere. Calgarians didn’t buy Nenshi’s claims that billions of dollars from the Alberta and federal governments amounted to a tax rebate—not when more than one-third of tax funds in Alberta’s coffers come from the province’s biggest city. A long history of ballooning security costs for big events made it hard to believe the RCMP and other agencies would stick to a budget greatly reduced from initial projections.
"Civic boosters" should always be approached with extreme skepticism.

Just yesterday, Mark Cohon (slickster who ran the CFL for a few years) was on the news explaining to people why Toronto's failed bid - which he led - to get the Amazon HQ (how gross that sounds) was a good thing:
"As a result of this process, we are now able to leverage a truly global platform to showcase our attractiveness as a world leading destination for jobs and growth,”
This city is booming - nice that this weasel can take credit for it.

I was reading a story the other day about the University of Utah to expand their football stadium, and in it they mentioned that the expansion was always with an eye towards a bid for the 2030 Olympics.

Our mayor has officially lost his mind.

This is what pisses me off and cements my belief that NO was the RIGHT outcome. Nenshi is supposed to be our advocate but instead he was “selling” to us. Just days before the vote he was telling Calgarians what a GREAT deal this was.

He should have been telling us the truth. The truth that PROV & FED support wasn’t adequate and that if we wanted the Olympics we needed to able to handle the heavy lifting and RISK on our own. The YES politicians and messengers were selling us snake oil because the Olympics were important to their ego, career and legacy.

Us plebes we’re going to pay for their party.

What happened to that guy?

He used to seem like a decent sort - grounded in the real world.

And he's really grown into the job. Literally.

But with no more roller-ski races on the schedule and the Olympics looming, Taufatofua needs to perform well in one last race on snow in order to qualify.

US roster for Beijing has been released. Matty Beniers and Jake Sanderson highlight the list, which includes seven players with NHL experience (Shore, Kampfer, Agostino, Warsofsky, Ness, O'Neill, Miele). 15 college players, 8 are playing in Europe, 2 in the AHL.

14 Forwards
Nick Abruzzese, Kenny Agostino, Matty Beniers, Brendan Brisson, Noah Cates, Sean Farrell, Sam Hentges, Matthew Knies, Marc McLaughlin, Ben Meyers, Andy Miele, Brian O’Neill, Nick Shore, Nathan Smith

8 Defensemen
Brian Cooper, Brock Faber, Drew Helleson, Steven Kampfer, Aaron Ness, Nick Perbix, Jake Sanderson, David Warsofsky

3 Goaltenders
Drew Commesso, Strauss Mann, Pat Nagle
I am a little surprised that they didn't go after a veteran like Bobby Ryan, who is sitting on the sidelines and apparently still wanting to play.
