NFL Offseason Thread

Post by brian »

Not quite there yet, but we basically are for about 15 teams. Lotsa rumors about the Texans getting ready to hire Bill O'Brien, which bums me out since I was hoping the Lions would make a run at him for their opening in two weeks.

I pretty much think it's a necessity at this point for the Lions to hire a head coach who has a history of developing QBs.

I don't think Stafford is physically right with that arm.

You'd imagine they'd have caught anything but he could have decided not to have a surgery that he needs. He used to throw normally. Now he's basically Stan Belinda and his throws float on him.

He was pretty good earlier in the season. You're right he may have something that happened over the course of this season and if so that would explain a lot, but he still has lazy footwork and mechanics regardless.

Certainly like that option bette than Lovie or Wisenhunt. No retreads, please.

Stafford in college - maybe a slight sidearm-y hitch but mostly normal.

Then somewhere in 2012 he starts throwing way sidearm (one example is at 53 seconds). This year he's dropped the slot even further. It's very strange.

Bonus: Ike Taylor at the beginning speaking what I assume is English.

Whisenhunt was pretty good when he had a QB. He's done wonders as OC with Phil Rivers and a bunch of random dudes this year. I thought Rivers was done before this season.

The sidearm stuff doesn't bother me as much as the footwork. He seems to dance around a lot lately and not throw off the right foot a lot as the season goes on the last couple of years.

A lot of the times he throws sidearm it makes sense to do so (throwing around rushing linemen on screens, etc.) though he will occasionally do it from the pocket when he doesn't need to and that's frustrating as well. I'm not a QB expert but what I think he needs is someone who will just spend the offseason tearing down and building up his mechanics like a golfer would with his swing. I don't think the Lions have really pushed him like they should for reasons I'm not privy to. In general I think they need a coach who is going to push them all harder.

I know he's said he's not interested in the NFL, but I'd also like to see them back a Brinks truck up to David Shaw's front door and see what happens. The good news is the Lions will have a lot more options for a head coach than they have in the past. Having a potential franchise QB will do that for you.

Are we sure Stafford is a potential franchise QB or are we sure Megatron would make anyone with a strong arm look like a franchise QB?

His past two games without full strenght megatron aren't anything special, especially when last week they were in a MUST WIN sitch.

He's had almost 15,000 yards the last three seasons, 10,000 of which were to guys not named Calvin. He's got the ability, it's a question of someone harnessing it and him working on it like the great QBs have always had to do. Tom Brady didn't come out of the womb throwing BBs.

There's a few guys I'd be happy with though Smith isn't really one of them, even if I agree with you that it would probably improve the team's discipline. The reports are that they're going to be looking for an offensive guy. One retread I wouldn't really mind would be Whisenhut. He's done wonders in a year with Rivers and seemed to always have pretty disciplined teams in Arizona. If not for their salary cap situation he probably wouldn't have been let go there after last year.

But the difference may be that Stafford did come out throwing BBs. He throws a beautiful ball. Super strong arm. I am not convinced he's much more than an above average QB yet, however. And your "10,000" to people other than Johnson rings hollow a bit because those yards were thrown to guys who were more open because of Johnson's presence.

This argument could have been applied to Montana, of course, who happened to have Jerry Rice to throw it to all those years. Steve Young as well. But they managed to take their teams to the playoffs consistently and of course won titles as well, which Stafford hasn't done.

Roethlisberger has unquestionably less arm talent than Stafford and also never had a Megatron. Flacco went to the playoffs his first five years.

Granted, some of this comes back to the rest of the team around a QB (most notably defensive units that were elite which stafford has not had). But also remember that Brady and Rodgers went to the Super Bowl with league worst defenses.

He may end up being a franchise QB. He's just 25. But he needs something to change to make me concede that point. Right now he's not a franchise QB, he's Jeff George.

Things to keep in mind as the Lions search for a new coach. Their GM, Martin Mayhew played for Lovie Smith and with Ken Whisenhut in the NFL.

He's also thrown more than any QB in the history of the sport. He should have a lot of yards. With CJ out, he put up 3 against Green Bay.

He doesn't want to work with anybody (he says), and his throwing technique seems to lead to his laying a lot of his WRs out (this is just a guess on a sports message board, HaulCitgo...so if you are around, you can preemptively go and fuck yourself). He's going to be arrested for manslaughter if he keeps this up.

As a fan of not the Lions, I hope he doesn't change a thing. I don't know where the problem lies...maybe all it will take is a new staff.

The team Ken Whisenhunt took to the Super Bowl basically was the Lions plus a #2 WR.

Rumors are that Lovie Smith is the favorite for the Bucs job, and he's already got an agreement with Jeff Tedford to be his OC, wherever he goes. I think I'd be on board with those hires for the Bucs.

Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen has 'indications' that he will return
Seems GM McKenzie also likely to stay. I guess I'll move a step closer to full-fledged fan, and pay attention to personnel moves this offseason. But if they bring Chucky Gruden back, I will be frustrated and less interested.

Bill Barnwell makes the case for Allen, in Grantland
In Oakland, the chatter suggesting that head coach Dennis Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie might hit the unemployment line seems horrifically unfair. The Raiders have basically had to spend the last two seasons getting out from under a decade of bad contracts handed out in the last days of the Al Davis administration and the insipid Carson Palmer trade pushed through by then-coach Hue Jackson in the power vacuum after Davis's death, a deal that cost the Raiders two high draft picks. The Raiders had a truly staggering $55 million in dead money on their cap this season, a figure that's due to fall to a mere $9.3 million for 2014. They'll have — not a typo — $66.6 million in cap space heading into 2014, in a market in which nobody has money to spend. Allen and McKenzie have had no hope of winning the past two seasons. Now that they've cleared the deck, they deserve time to work on building a winner in Oakland

If the head coach isn't demonstrably a bad coach, teams like Oakland and Cleveland should not be firing him.

Thing is, both the Browns and the Raiders brought in guys who were not coveted by any other teams. Instead of giving the coaches time to work it out, they see them as being disposable parts that should be replaced regularly until the miracle occurs and either one of these crap franchises starts winning.

And just what are the odds that either one of these laughing stocks can bring in a sought after coach? How much will they have to overpay?

Yeah, I'll blow Kranepool's goat if they hire Tom Cable. There's so much bad information, mis-information and just plain wrong information related to these coaching searches, that I don't really buy anything until there's an official announcement from the team.

I like this guy.

Maybe the Nittany Lions can get the Imagineers at Disney to make that Paterno statue animatronic so it can stroll the sidelines at Happy Valley.

Not a good sign when the team's owner is asked if the team is run by the Three Stooges: http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.s ... eland.html

But with Josh McDaniels rumoured to be on his way to town, the "Three Stooges" nickname wont work for long.
