Are you talking about the AirPort base station or AirPort Express?

The earliest AirPort devices would only work with the 802.11b/g, which are much slower networking protocols than what modern browsers use. 802.11b has a max rate of 11 Mbits/second, while 802.11g has a max rate of 54 Mbits/second. If you got a new router, you could get one with the 802.11n protocol, which increases the rate to about 600 Mbits/second. The current AirPort Express router offers 802.11n speeds.

Yeah, it's an Airport Express 802.11b/g. Sounds like that's the culprit.

I had to call a tech out to hook up my Internet last year (there was a rats nest of cables in the box outside and I did not feel like dealing with that shit)
was surprised that I actually wanted a wired connection on my desktop. It's not like I move it around, and it is the bandwidth sucker of the computers.

@Rush, Twitter and Facebook even on a desktop are pretty low requirements for internet. Where you run into problems, particularly with older wireless is trying to stream video of anything higher than DVD quality. Part of the reason old Youtube buffered so much is most connections just wouldn't have handled smoothly streaming and Youtube was prety small. Now that it is humongous and people have faster internet, they don't buffer any more and you can actually watch Netflix/Hulu etc. Netflix in particular does a really good job downscaling their video to fit your streaming and sacrificing minimal quality.

But, hey, for anyone new to the Internet, that hasn't seen it for the last decade and a half or so, I'll clarify for you. Home devices are now capable of processing larger amounts of data in shorter times. Servers are now more powerful. And, to make it really clear, it's 2014 not 1998.

The irony here is that the call center donkeys aren't the ones that sound like they are struggling with English as a second language whereas the guy who is supposed to be speaking English as a mother tongue is not able to express simple thoughts to the degree he can give you the wrong answer in understandable terms.

How big is the hard drive and what version of OS X are you running?

There's a utility called Disk Inventory X you can use to determine what's filling your hard drive. It's very handy for identifying cache folders that are getting large.

Whatever you do, do NOT remove any files or folders from the Hard Drive > System folder.

What do Macs use for the equivalent of the Windows Task Manager? I know I can get a console and run top, but surely there's a more moderner tool, right?

One thing that can take up a lot of space are iPhone and/or iPad backups in iTunes. Launch iTunes, go to the iTunes menu and select Preferences, and click on the Devices tab. It will list various device backups, and you can delete older backups or backups for devices you no longer have.

Activity Monitor. Go to Applications > Utilities and launch it from there.

Any ideas on how to clear out Garage Band tutorials? According to your Disk Inventory X, it looks like downloading a shitton of tutorials wasn't the smartest idea memory space wise. I deleted garageband, but can't find where the computer stores the tutorials. This is my first Mac, and this side of things is way harder to understand than Windows Explorer.

IN Disk Inventory X, if you right click on the file type on the left side, it gives you an option to show the files with their locations.

Note that the Library Isn't viewable by default...those files may be hidden in the Application Support for GarageBand, which may not have deleted when you uninstalled it.

In finder you have to hold down the Option Key and Click "Go" on the menu...then you can click "Library"


And you wanna be super careful in that Library Folder

Those tutorials are located in the following place:

Hard Drive > Library > Application Support > GarageBand. There are other folders in there, and my guess is your tutorials are under "Learn to Play".

When you try to delete these files, you'll be prompted for the admin credentials (unless you're logged in as root, and if you're doing that, you shouldn't).

Can I erase those files through Disk Inventory X?

When I try to do that, it tells me that "Garage Band" cannot be moved to the trash. Maybe you do not have sufficient access privileges.

Can I erase through Disk Inventory X, or do I need to go through other means on my computer? If so, how?

It took my Mac several days to update the amount of available space after I recently went on a clean up binge - including moving that iPhoto library to an external. Sabo told me that was normal. You probably have way more space freed up than you needed to at this point.

chedda, run this again and see if the drive space is different. If you deleted a bunch of stuff, it should.

And yes, it can take some time to update the reported empty drive space, but it shouldn't take that long. Usually it's a matter of minutes, not hours or days. Although AB's situation was a bit unique, because he moved hundreds of gigs off his local hard drive onto the server. The more data that's moved/deleted, the longer it will take to update.

My wife's Mac doesn't have a Storage choice in the About This Mac dialog. I assume it's because she has an older OS? I found storage info under the SSD details, but it doesn't include any breakdown of where the storage is being used.

Like Chedda, I was a bit surprised when I removed some stuff (just emptied the Trash) and the storage numbers didn't change. It doesn't make sense to me that it would take time to update that (it's not like the storage device doesn't need to keep track of that in real time), but I believe it's true.
