I had issues with Zoom not "remembering" instead of not recognizing. So it would find the camera once, but the next time you'd have to manually go in and select that camera by choosing the arrow next to the camera icon. I think it kind of fixed itself after an update, but not positive. Had same thing happen when I was testing microphones.

Related question. Been trying to set up a shared OneDrive at the office so I can save shit, then have my staff upload docs to our file management system. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get them access to the shared drive.

I don't know if you can share the entire OneDrive instance to others, but you should be able to share individual files and folders inside it.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to do. To be fair to OneDrive, I haven't done a ton of digging on how to set this up (i.e. checked YouTube).

Hey...does anyone have access to an Adobe Flash installer .msi file? I need to pull one apart using ORCA to get the product and upgrade codes, and you only get the .exe installer from the Adobe website.

I’m updating my 2017 iMac and my 2019 16” MBP to MacOS Big Sur.

Currently the iMac sits at 786.5 MB of 12.18 GB — About 3 days remaining.

Unless this picks up the pace later this afternoon (where Apple distributes more servers to handle the load), I might have to wait on this for a few days.

ETA — About 5 days remaining.

If I were you, I wouldn't upgrade right away. The Mac Admins Slack channel has been rife with reports of how unstable Big Sur has been, even with the gold master release. General rule of thumb I follow for macOS upgrades is to wait until the .0.2 patch is released.

That’s always good advice, and I think I’ll pull my MBP back for now. May as well use one of them as a test box. I’m curious if they already have patches slated for deployment.

Hey Dorks,

Anyone know anything about SiriKit for app developers? I'm working on an MBA project and I'm trying to see if or how much Apple basically subsidizes app developers to create content that works with Siri. I can't find any pricing info, but I am also seeing that maybe it's just a functionality that you can add into your coding software for free with approval? Not a big deal, just trying to add some meat to a powerpoint.

ETA: I'll source you in the documentation, of course, so don't let that stop you from answering.

EATA: Now that means rass will post the answer in the DIck and Balls thread or something similar.

I'm hoping one of you tech guys can help me here. I really do feel like Abe Simpson at the moment.

We have Microsoft Office 2011 on both my wife's Mac desktop and my MacBook laptop. I resisted updating the two machines to the new Mac OS because it is my understanding that Office 2011 is 32 bit and won't work on the updated OS which requires the 64 bit newer Office software.

So, now it is time to do my taxes, and I guess TurboTax is now requiring the updated Mac OS. I've used Turbotax for years and am not going another route for taxes now. So, I'm guessing I have to bite the bullet and update the OS and my Microsoft Office software. But, I'm scared to death of losing our Word and Excel and Outlook files. So, I assume I update my Office 2011 to 2019 on both computers in a way that doesn't compromise my files, before I update the OS. I don't know how to do this. Do I just buy the software at the App Store? How do you do that in a way that you can use it on both machines? (Also, I know there are free versions of Office, but I don't think I want to go through that headache with my wife.)

Any helpful advice is appreciated.

If I were you, I'd sign into Microsoft.com and sign up for an Office 365 subscription. It is family-oriented so you can load the Office Suite on both machines (several actually). $10/mo.

I'd then ask about compatibility of files from Office 2011 the most recent one.

dM or text sabo and ask what’s the latest version your computer can handle first. Sounds like it’s an older one so you don’t want to get all fouled up.

Thanks, guys. It's a 2015 MacBook Air. So, it's not all that old. But, my wife's iMac is from 2011.

OK. I don't think her iMac is going to be able to run the latest MS Office. Your 2015 MB Air should be fine. But that's nearing EOL too.

You can get an entry-level 21.5" iMac for about $1200.

Honestly though, you could probably buy some refurbished Macs, because a lot of people have been trading in some of the more recent machines to get their hands on the new Mac with the M1 processor (like me, for instance).


eta: You should still be able to utilize MS Office 365 though. Just use Office apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc) on their platform, instead of downloading the apps to your computer.

I don't qualify as a "power user" probably, but I'd say i'm pretty Office-focused and I hated the 365 when I tried it out. So I had the company buy me a standalone versions.

The 2011 iMacs can run macOS 10.13.6 at most. The 2015 MacBook Air can run the latest version of macOS, which is Big Sur. I'd avoid upgrading to Big Sur, as several users reported WiFi connection issues and as far as I know, they're still unresolved.

If you want to buy a refurbished Mac, I've heard the Mac of All Trades site is a good place to buy one. I've never bought one from there, but I know some other Mac admins who have and they've reported good experiences.

If you plan to buy a new Mac, I recommend getting one of the Apple Silicon versions like EnochRoot described. All of your old apps should work fine with that chipset, and newer versions of those apps should see a performance boost with the M1 processor.

I find the browser-based versions of Office 365 apps to be less useful than a local app, and I avoid using them if I can. But that's getting harder these days, especially with everyone WFH.

Animation or audio?

You might be able to run multiple animations if you can create the animations over transparent layers (thinking out loud here).

There’s a way I think but you have to override the basic PowerPoint controls in a sense. I’d havEbro be at my computer to verify.

How do you know they're corrupt? What programs have you tried opening them with? Have you tried transferring them to a different volume? Are the file name extensions correct?

Ok those are borked but may be salvageable. I'd suggest googling how to fix 'truncated' or 'incomplete' JPG and see what solutions there are for your OS. Seems to be a few paid and free options out there.

Is it possible my FN and ALT keys swapped jobs? I had a long reboot issue Monday AM and all week I've been constantly hitting FN when I need to hit ALT. I have no idea if muscle memory is correct and something happened or if my brain broke.

Anyone here use a KVM switch to switch monitor and keyboard/mouse control between two computers?

My wife has been using our personal PC for work for years but her company recently sent her a laptop that she is supposed to use instead. She has a triple-monitor setup in her office and I would like to be able to keep use the personal PC. It looks like a KVM switch is my best option...anyone know of any good models and/or any pitfalls in regard to using them?

I haven't used one in years, so no specific recommendations. But I do remember using one that used keyboard shortcuts to change what you were controlling and some with a hardware button or switch. The ones with buttons/switches were far less troublesome and easier to use.

I used to use a StarTech KVM, but haven't used it in several years. Mine also had buttons I could use to switch. It worked pretty well, but it wasn't perfect.
