I guess this might be the best thread since it's been popular lately, but I'm thinking of having something shipped to my brother and am wondering if it's common for online liquor shops like this one to be charging upwards of twice what you'd pay in a store? Does everything involved in the shipping of alcohol necessitate the price bump, or am I getting ripped off? And if so, are there better alternatives?

Those prices are insane! There are some weird shipping laws between states, so if you are shipping to a different state with restrictive laws, just order from a liquor store in that state and have them deliver or ship to your brother. I get emails from https://www.caskers.com/ for some reason. Their prices are competitive to local stores. Shipping is $10 for the first bottle, $3 for each additional bottle. That should still be way cheaper than the free shipping from your site.

So weird, I just got a package from Spirited Gifts from my boss. Good to know she doesn't read the Swamp. Really interesting bottle, Blackened American Whiskey. Metallica teamed with a distiller, created a bourbon/rye blend, aged it in black brandy barrels, and pummeled the casks with "sonic enhanced" Metallica music to force the liquid deeper into the barrels, extracting more/different flavors from the wood. Then the hilarious part, each batch had its own playlist selected by members of Metallica. The website has a link to the Spotify playlist for each batch. I'm sure listening to the playlist while drinking will enhance the whiskey.

Perhaps the sonic waves will force it deeper into your liver.

The org I work for has been awarded another bottle of Buffalo Trace to auction off for our charity. This time it is 1 of 400 from their 6 millionth barrel. Last time we had a bottle from them we sold it for 6 grand.

You guys ever try Rittenhouse? It just appeared on the shelves here and I was wondering if it's worth it.

Yeah - it's in the "American Whisky" section.

Thing is - and I learned this at a bourbon tasting - most Canadian Whiskies (CC, Crown Royal etc) are like 10% rye. Only the Americans are making the 100% stuff.

Maybe there's a Rye whiskey thread...

Couldn't find a rye thread.

The other day at a bar my wife drank a cocktail called a Vieux Carré. Pretty good variation on a Manhattan, albeit a bit sweet.

Shot of Sweet Vermouth
Shot of Cognac
A bit of Benedictine
A shake of Angostura bitters
A shake of Peychaud bitters

(As an alternative, use B&B instead of Benedictine, and dial back on the Cognac.

Had some of this last night. Smooth, sweet and spicy.

I know it's one of the cheaper bourbons around, but I'm really enjoying the George Dickel I picked up last week.

I recently bought a bottle of Old Grand Dad 114 and am impressed with it. It’s smooth and has a very oaky taste, which is surprising since it only cost $30.

Eagle rare blantons and stagg are excellent. They also own sazerac rye which is great.

Four Roses Single Barrel went from $38 to $49 this month. Damn, I always thought it was underpriced, but I’m disappointed that Four Roses eventually arrived at the same conclusion.

Interesting, I was enjoying a bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel this past weekend. Never had it before. Good stuff, but I still prefer good old Knob Creek. I like more oak and vanilla. Four Roses had a great caramel finish, and you didn't taste the extra alcohol.

I think the last thing is a big reason I love the Four Roses. That smoothness with a little bit of that 100 proof heat. Knob Creek is a bit rougher around the edges. But I have a special place in my heart for Knob Creek. At 22 with no serious income, it was my first “splurge” on whiskey and made me get into bourbon in the first place.

This thread just made me think of starting an alcohol delivery service named Burb'n and now I hate myself.

They've had only 5 batches and charge $200 a bottle, I'm going to assume nobody has had it yet.

I received a bottle of Michter single barrel rye and a bottle of Sazerac rye for Christmas. Nice.

I like strong oak and vanilla in my bourbon, looking to try something new. I went back to my old favorite, Knob Creek, and while I still like it, I think my tastes are more refined and I'd like something a little smoother or better quality. I drink more scotch and rye than bourbon, so the Knob Creek bottle should last me a long time.

Right there with you, Sybian. I have a bottle of Knob Creek that will probably last me awhile. Like you, I drink more rye than bourbon anyway. My wife prefers Basil Hayden, which is definitely a lighter touch.
