Qatar want to get in some matches cause they don't have to qualify for 2022. Similar to Korea being in the 2000 Gold Cup.
Japan, no idea. Cause there are lot of Japanese in Brazil?

Michel Platini detained over award of 2022 World Cup to Qatar

Platini did vote for Qatar, a vote, with others at Uefa, which the then Fifa president Sepp Blatter has always said were crucial to sending the tournament to Qatar rather than his preference, the USA. After the award, Qatar Airways ordered 50 French-made A320 neo-family planes made by Airbus, and QSI bought and mega-funded Paris Saint-Germain, the club Sarkozy supports.

Was shocked to hear that they had a squad too. I suppose USL2 is bigger than I imagined.

ETA - crikey, there's an 8 team division in that league made up of all Florida teams

As an Arsenal fan who always loved Wilshere, but often got frustrated with him, this was fascinating to see. Wilshere always seemed on the verge of becoming an elite player, but ankle and leg injuries constantly set him back. He had a reputation of being petulant, immature, undisciplined and a partier, but this shed some new light. Talking about one injury rehab, he was out much longer than expected not because he was lazy with rehab, as reported, but because his 4 year old son was having night seizures without a diagnosis, and he was spending nights in the hospital. Kind of nice hearing Wenger encouraged him to focus on hi son, and kept that quiet in the media.

Funny, I don't know that I've ever seen the outside of the stadium, and I used to watch a lot of Italian soccer. Not at all what I pictured. It's a Brutalist eyesore.

Referee thoughts:
I find it disturbing the number of times in both the WWC and CA that the ref is ten feet or closer away from the play and makes the wrong call on a penalty. As in that should be a rare sight.
I understand wanting the ref in charge to make the decision but for the sake of time, I don't see why the fourth official can't go to the VAR screen and make the call. VAR is already suggesting things be looked at so other officials are in the decision making process.
I fear VAR is going to turn soccer into the last two minutes of an NBA game where officials are scared to make calls and review damn near every play in a close game.

Because I finally have good WiFi for a night, can’t fall asleep yet, and spent all day yesterday next door to a Sounders-Revs game without even knowing it until it was over, my soccer question of the year is:

How is (ARE) L.A. a +40 in goal diff when the next best is a +13. Is this an unprecedentedly good team (SIDE)?

And a bonus soccer-related anecdote - one of the Amtrak employees on the way up from Seattle was a reasonable facsimile of Sydney Leroux.

Non-soccer P.S.-there are so many Asians here in Vancouver! Someone should make a nickname outta that.

N-S P.P.S. It’s nice here.

On the flip side, three shots went off the same post in the Rapids/Quakes game Saturday night. Should have won Man of the Match.

Very nice indeed. His agressiveness and pace brought four defenders to him, freeing Giroud. And then a perfectly weighted pass through so Giroud could one-time it.

Fulham had 89% possession in the first half against the violent cunts from Milwall. At the end of the game, the percentage had dipped to 83%.

Four nil to the Cottagers. Fuck Milwall!

Some time ago, we hosted some English friends who were visiting on their vacation. The husband is interested in the NFL but doesn't know much. I laughed when he asked, "So the Raiders' fans. They're like your version of Millwall supporters, right?"

A week ago Vietnam beat Thailand 1-0 to win the SE Asian Cup. The same Thai team you guys crushed 13-0.

Tomorrow Vietnam plays Thailand in 2022 World Cup qualifying.

It's a huge rivalry. The media of both countries are all over it.
