The Sweet Science

Post by howard test2 »

good scrap on HBO right now. Jesse Vargas vs Wale "Lucky Boy" Omotoso. 23-0 vs 21-0; "Lucky Boy" is a touted prospect but tonight is his first non-tomato can. Vargas has been handled a bit less cautiously, but these are some of my favorite matchups--young guys who are skilled and had cleaned up everyone placed in front of them, but their first strong challenge that acts as the gateway to the top tier.

These two guys are cracking hard for welterweights.

Tim Bradley, conqueror of Pacquiao (thanks to generous judges) defends against some undersized russian who hasn't fought anyone of note in the western hemisphere.

And this has suddenly turned into a brain damage fight. Vargas pounding on not-so lucky boy's face, the tough Nigerian refusing to taste the canvas (filled up on leather instead). Apologize for the stereotyping, but these damn West Africans are so damn hard-headed.

now it has morphed into a slower, tactical fight in the middle rounds. Vargas using his speed to counter his opponent's power, and scoring with stiff jabs; Lucky Boy probing for an opening to launch a power shot. Entertaining fight through seven of ten.

Vargas prevailed, despite being knocked down in the second. 96-94 x 2, 97-91. Fair call, no shame to "Lucky Boy". Both will be back on TV soon.

Ruslan "The Siberian Rocky" Provodnikov dropped champ Bradley in the first, although ruled a slip. You see this on one the youtube.

Maybe the Italian Stallion got a little action when training for the Drago bout, and sired a little welterweight.

Provodikov fucked up Tim Bradley in the second round; Bradley refused to fall. The Siberian Rocky took some himself, but basically couldn't finish because he punched himself out.

Tune in if you're just watching porn or West Coast hoops.

I'm watching a streak of UFC 158. The first two fights were kind of boring, but the third was a quick knockout and the fourth between Carlos Condit and Johnny Hendricks has been a brawl. It's not often you see a shorter fighter with the most powerful shots, but that's been the case with Hendricks. Good fight so far.

ETA: Fantastic fight. The announcers think Hendricks might have broken his hand in the second round, but both fighters were throwing bombs throughout the match up. I think Hendricks wins the fight 2-1.

ETAA: And Hendricks wins a unanimous decision, 29-28.

I really want George St. Pierre to deliver a straight up KTFO out over Nick Diaz.

So far, GSP is winning the fight handily, but at the end of the second round, Diaz proceeded to talk a lot of shit even though his face is swollen from eating a bunch of leather. What a fucking punk.

Dominating win for GSP, he says before the judges score cards are announced.

ETA: GSP wins 50-45. Diaz didn't do much, although GSP's right eye is rather messed up.

ETAA: Nick Diaz says he's retiring. Interesting.

I don't have an opinion. I've tuned out of the business/TV side of the sport these days.

I have noticed Showtime upping the frequency of their telecasts. HBO and Showtime have been too focused on the big PPV matches, and neglecting the quality of their monthly (give or take) shows. Last week was an exception--the undercard bout was an excellent match on paper; but the main event was intended to do nothing more than push Tim Bradley's presence to set up a PPV for him. They were lucky a great fight broke out instead. And, surprise, they boosted Bradley and produced a new star in the Siberian challenger (whose name I can't spell).

Golden Boy does a great job of developing prospects and building up stars, with their weekly Spanish language telecasts. Their stable of stars is impressive (Canelo Alverez, Amir Khan, Robert Guerrero) and they have a deep bench. If they have replaced their relationship with HBO by working more closely with Showtime, I really don't know how much that hurts them. I have no clue the subscription numbers of the two, or more importantly, what percentage of subscriptions are driven primarily by boxing fans. I have to assume most households are not like me; boxing has been and continues to be the #1 reason I subscribe to either of these premium channels.

I wonder which side holds more influence, the broadcasters, or the promoters (Main Event, Golden Boy, and the smaller ones) who control the boxers, kinda sorta. Then there is Floyd, who kinda sorta works with Golden Boy.

I just hope for more good fights on TV.

So some significant rule changes to the Amateur Boxing Rules

10 point scoring---finally giving up on that computer scoring fiasco for highly corrupt judge fiasco.
Removing the head gear---story is that they will take less of a beating and fewer concussions.. Guess this is similar to the argument on why MMA is less bad for the head than boxing.

Oh yeah. Fucking Abner Mares--my buddy ref Jay Nady did Ponce a favor.

Gabe Rosado blatantly robbed (although I did not closely watch the first four rounds--cooking dinner).

Floyd is the greatest genius in the ring since roy jones in his prime. I do not like him, but he continues to amaze. What brilliance!

ETA: I shouldn't forget Leo Santa Cruz, who looks ready for prime time. He has been coddled, but lets throw him in against Donaire, and see if that big right hand can do some damage like it did tonight.

On HBO last night, why would an Englishman ever agree to fight an Argentine in a soccer stadium in Argentina!? Never had a chance! I thought the fight was fairly even, Lampey thought it was a draw.

Decision, 112-105 on all cards.

HBO Boxing After Dark last night...

Great footage of Garcia puking in an elevator. But more relevant was the fact that Juan Manuel Lopez has gone from being an undefeated potential superstar to a completely shot fighter within three years. He was pathetic last night.

I just got invited to go to Canelo's training camp in Big Bear tomorrow (at Sugar Shane Mosely's house!).

My wife works with the wife of ex-Team USA Boxing coach Joe Zanders, who invited us. Apparently we are going to get to take pictures and chat with Canelo for a bit. Hopefully the 24/7 cameras around so that I can make a cameo.

I'm pumped!!!

keg, please tell us about your day at Big Bear.

I'm a sucker for Mike Tyson. Nostalgia, hope for redemption, or love of a good trainwreck. Maybe all those reasons and others. You put Mike on tape, I will pay attention.

Mike Tyson: 'I did a lot of bad things, and I want to be forgiven'

There are tons of links with insightful commentary. One of the best observations, and I apologize for not remembering where I saw it, was observation of the strain of playing the role of his public persona Friday night as a promoter of this event. Such a performance takes a lot out of someone under the best of circumstances. Such an effort for someone sincerely battling addiction, on the sixth day of sobriety, is a tremendous burden. Early recovery is best accomplished out of the public eye. Anonymously, even. (And, while I'm on the topic, fuck Dr. Drew and his ill-conceived TV show; I thought it was a bad idea, but I don't castigate his attempt, but his refusal to pull the plug until long after the failure was obvious.)

The above link has the post-event press conference vid of Mike, which is most telling. There is also a vid of his live appearance on ESPN Friday Night Fights, focusing on his apology to Teddy Atlas for trying to rape Teddy's 11yo niece, some 35 years ago, when Mike was 16yo.

That story is the pivotal one in Mike's downfall. Teddy was a young, washed-up amateur fighter, working for Cus D'Amato beginning his career as a boxing trainer. He addressed Mike's assault by sticking a handgun in Mike's ear, explaining the stark choice of either staying away from Teddy's family or death. Teddy fired off a round to cement the point.

Cus then had a choice. Cus chose to fire Teddy, and to coddle/excuse Mike's criminality. The rest, as they say, is history.

(Teddy Atlas is and was no angel. His lack of talents brought different forms of payment for his crimes, but that is a story for another day, kids. Greeks had their mythology and literature; we have Boxing.)

ETA: more words.

ETAa: I do not mean to suggest that anyone who does not give two shits about Tyson should change their attitude. I understand the vast majority of sports fans don't care about Mike, or about boxing. I'm not trying to persuade or convince anyone differently.

Big Bear was awesome. Mosley's house is huge but not very well taken care of - it's minimally furnished, has old carpet, chipped floor tile, no TP in the restroom, etc. Very much a seldom used habitat. It looks a lot nicer from outside than inside. His garage/gym is legit though, its the nicest part of his house, everything is new and very well maintained. Shane was not there, but his pops and his cousin (who runs everyday operations for Team Mosley) were cool as fuck. Welcomed us in with open arms, offered us whatever we wanted, chatted with us the whole time we were there - they made us feel like we were part of their crew.

We were told to show up before Canelo because Chepo does not let anyone open the door once he closes it. So we smashed up the mountains at unsafe speeds with a truck that has the turning radius of a Winnebago. Felt like Dorner running from the cops. It was a private sparring session so we were the only civilians at the gym, everyone else was either a trainer, sparring partner, or camera crew. When Canelo got there he went around the gym and introduced himself to everyone (which was very cool). Chepo gave us crap at first because he didnt know who the hell we were and there had been rumors about a spy in Canelo's camp. We kind of ignored him, slowly walked away and luckily he got distracted by hating on the camera crew instead. Chepo would soften up and later use us as interpreters to help him communicate with the Mosleys (which was also really cool).

Canelo was supposed to spar with Shane Jr, but Shane Jr flaked at the last minute so he sparred with four other (black) guys, none of which had Mayweather's boxing style. Canelo would spar with each one for three rounds. He handled the first three pretty easily - two of which seemed to get injured, but Canelo was clearly winded when they threw the 4th guy into the ring. I dont think he threw a punch in two of the three rounds with that guy. He just ran around the ring and did some Mayweather shoulder rolls. I am not sure if that was due to the high altitude or Canelo being out of shape. FWIW, Canelo looked about 15 pounds lighter at the weigh-in today. After the sparring session, Canelo did some more cardio and core work while wearing a plastic jacket. Then he came over, took pictures with us, signed some stuff, then bounced. It was awesome watching a world class athlete train...a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tremendous stuff, Keg. Heck of a day!

From yesterday's LA Times: Las Vegas bettors agree, establishing Mayweather as more than a 5-2 favorite late Friday.

I don't know bugger-all compared to Vegas odds makers but, damn, Canelo Alvarez is one tough cookie and has some serious ring savvy. Don't be surprised if he wins.

I think I know my boxing, have watched a lot of fights in the last 30 years, but can someone please explain the 114-114 score?

I thought Floyd did some schooling this morning and was never in any kind of trouble throughout the fight. I understand that Alvarez was the aggressor, but he was pretty frustrated and humbled by round 6 or 7. The fight was as close as Floyd allowed it to be because the pace was dictated by him. Very, very odd scoring though...

Yep. That is just boxing. No deeper explanation necessary. Incompetence if you desire more detail. Incompetence which is not punished. Many judges reward punches despite their being blocked by the arms, shoulders, and gloves. Despite the clear rules. Same judge gave Tim Bradley seven rounds against Pacquiao.

Good news, even the bad judges like Ross are fine 95% of their bouts; they just tend to cough and choke on occasion. Better news, bad decisions seem to me to be less frequent than in prior decades.

Tommyboy sends his regards. I toldt him I would not be shocked with some odd scoring from the judges, but I anticipated only a small chance of a draw, just to grab more money with a rematch.

The Silvio Branco vs. Juho Haapoja bout is on the Fight Network (repeated) tonight and tomorrow morning. It's a good one. And it's for the WBC Silver Cruiserweight title, whateverthefuck that is. Well, it's not quite a full title. More of an untitle. Let's say a boxer is the WBC Boogerweight champion and he beats the living fuck out of his mail carrier, gets a boatload of legal issues dumped on him and can't defend his title right away. The WBC has created "Silver" (presumably one less louder than gold) so they'll have an interim champion who is not actually the real weight class champion but who can go out and defend the championship without ever really having it. Kind of a work around. And kind of a surrogate champion. And if you can call something a title fight, you can probably charge more for it. Branco/Haapoja was for the (ironically) vacant Silver Cruiserweight title.

Silvio Branco, by the way, is 47-years old.

For years, I thought Fernet-Branca was a manufacturer of boxing equipment. That would be from having only seen it printed on trunks worn by guys like Vito Antuofermo, Carlos Monzón and Salvador Sanchez, as well as canvases and corners in rings; televised cards and still photos from countless boxing magazines. When I was 13 and "industrial arts" was part of our education we had a graphic design installment in which one of the tasks was to make a print for one's own t-shirt. I made a FERNET-BRANCA t-shirt, black with white block lettering, because I saw Pipino Cuevas wearing one. None of my friends had the slightest idea what it meant when they saw me wearing it nor did they, that I can recall, ever bother to ask. Turned out, I learned very many years later, that it is really just some bizarre Italian booze that a grandma made in her bathtub.

Anyway, here's a classic. Vito Antuofermo -v- Marvin Hagler from one of the greatest nights of televised boxing in history, November 30th, 1979. Also on TV that evening? Leonard-Benitez, Hearns-Colbert, Johnson-Galindez and a few undercard gems. After this fight, Antuofermo would admit to having fought the fifteen rounds with a serious case of bronchitis. It was the middle entry in a three-bouts-over-nine-months stretch for Vito that included winning the WBA & WBC middleweight titles in a tremendous 15 rounder versus Hugo Corro, the Hagler fight and then a split decision loss to Alan Minter; each one going the 15 round distance.

Great fight. And I love Fernet-Branca. I share a belief with many old Italians that a shot of bitters before a meal - and sparkling mineral water during a meal - is the best thing in the world for one's digestion and general health.
