I thought this was a pretty good run down of the current theories.

#5 (the one BFJ linked to above while I was writing this) and #7 are two that seemed to be getting a lot of attention lately, maybe just because they're pretty reasonable.

I saw the one BFJ linked earlier today. Occam's razor cuts a fine edge.

#7 is less plausible to me because would've that other plane have had some inkling?

This is a really stupid question but can a plane get high enough to where it just gets sucked into space?

I don't think so. Couldn't generate escape velocity, if I were guessing.

Quick googles say that the engines would fail above a certain height (around 450000 for that type of plane) and the opposite would happen.

Thanks for that link. That helps tie some of the various things I've read.

This is the craziest fucking story I can remember. It boggles the mind that a plane that size could disappear today.

I think it's probably in the ocean, but I don't think it was crashed on purpose. I just don't think they're looking in the right spots. Some ship is going to find it in a few weeks, or otherwise flotsam will start to wash ashore, probably in Africa.

Yeah, the ocean is a pretty damn big place and if they're not looking in the right spots then it could takes weeks to find. And I don't know if this is true, but I assume the longer it takes the less likely they find an intact debris field.

I'm not an astrophysicist, but I have watched the first two episodes of Cosmos. So basically I'm 25% to being an astrophysicist.

And now that I think a little more about it, you can't get sucked into space no matter how high you get, barring a black hole. You can do the inverse, and escape the pull of earth's gravity, but that implies intentionality, whereas "getting sucked" implies you are being acted upon. Heh.

If you could get sucked into space on a passenger plane, we've wasted a lot of money on rockets.

There is an aspect of the hi-jacking theories that makes sense to me and one I've never thought of: in traditional hi-jacking scenarios, the hi-jackers have the pilots call ahead to the airport(s) of choice for fuel/whatever where they are met by SWAT teams and negotiators on their ground. It would make lots of sense to instead divert the plane where you don't have those impediments and have your own weapons around the airfield. Furthermore you could (in theory) see any potential rescuers coming. I realize this would mean commandeering an existing airfield (unlikely but I imagine there are abandoned ones which could be made serviceable or existing ones with poor security) or constructing your own (even more difficult). Not saying this is a likely scenario but it falls into the realm of possible.

Of course the problem in this case (and for me shoots down the terrorist angle) is no one has claimed responsibility and most of the point of hi-jacking is to call attention to whatever perverted cause you have.

My belief is something failed with the aircraft and in an attempt to save it the pilot got horribly lost and those poor people ended up as fish food. I do think all the coverage of the radar coverage holes etc has given the lunatics something to look into.

On #7, apparently not. Not with the ACARS and other transponder stuff turned off. Not saying that scenario is likely, just that it isn't immediately impossible.

Still amazes me a plane could just be gone in this day and age.

"generally" ( I would think you would assume "generally" should be added).

A rocket ship has a good shot at getting to space.

If planes attempt to go to space, they will fall apart 100% of the time. Is that not clear to everyone?

Rocket ships, despite those that blow up like the Challenger, generally don't.

Why is this now a thing?

Yeah? I thought I read somewhere that planes cannot make the leap to space without coming completely apart (setting aside all the other issues with the attempt).

If I am wrong about that, my bad to brian.

Yes, they absolutely can't. I was just kinda ribbing Jerloma about his (admittedly on his part) stupid question without trying to call him an idiot. I obviously don't think he's an idiot.

So what's the difference between an airplane and rocketship? Size of the engines? Maybe he found a way to use human brains for fuel and flew to space.

Planes wouldn't fall apart because they aren't capable of flying high enough.

Planes work with air lift whereas rockets I assume are just shot into the sky but I don't really know anything about them. A rocket has to be traveling like 20,000 mph to escape Earth's gravity.

Pretty sure the Challenger fell apart because their gaskets couldn't handle the cold. Or whatever Richard Feynman said.

A rebuttal to that "fire in plane and they were trying to get to a close runway theory"

http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense ... gkawi.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And HuffPo has a screaming headline (standard for them) about a source that claims the plane is in the south Indian ocean and likely never to be found that is also just base speculation.

I went to the barber shop during lunch, and they had CNN playing on the TV. Dear lord, who the hell respects that channel any more? They had all sorts of talking heads speaking nothing but pure speculation, and then right as the program was about to change, the lead talking head admitted they don't know what's going on.

Then why the fuck are you speculating about terrorists, or fires, or UFOs or whatever nonsense you're spewing for that long? I'd much rather listen to 20 minutes of people saying "I don't know" than the sheer bullshit broadcast during that segment. How the hell can anyone listen to this crap all day long?
