Re: Tipping
I've recently started making sure to tip the housekeeper at a hotel. Most of my stays are one night, so it isn't a big deal, but I've read multiple places that if you stay more than one night you should tip every day you get service because it might not be the same person and you can potentially tip one person for the whole stay when they only cleaned your room the last day. Food for thought.

I leave a couple bucks a day for the housekeeper. I'll never miss it and it helps them out. (Plus it usually results in me getting some extra water bottles, etc.)
Like servers and everything else it would be nice if their employers paid them a fair wage and I didn't have to, but i don't mind doing it.

There have been times I either forget or don't have cash, but daily definitely makes sense. Its kind of like how servers will close you out if they're leaving? Makes sure you get the right people.
Re: Tipping
I usually stay at a hotel for two days while travelling for work. I ask not to have the room cleaned until I leave. That saves them time to get rooms ready for incoming guests. I also leave them $5 when I leave.
The family just did a quick two day trip and we actually got bonus points for asking not to have our room cleaned each day. We did request for a couple more towels and I gave the young man that brought to our room a couple of bucks. We also left $5 for the maid.
We usually give the kid that bags and takes out our groceries a couple of bucks for their trouble. We try to make sure we have at least a dollar available when we go to the store.

Re: Tipping
I thought it was $5 per day.
When I'm in a hotel, I hate having to tip everyone I see. You know, the doorman when he opens the cab door, the valet who brings you the car you paid $30 to park in the basement etc, etc...
But the women who clean have a terrible, terrible job. Outside of mining or working construction in the winter, that has to be one of the worst jobs around.

I've never tipped a hotel housekeeper. I'm not against tipping in general, I just never think about it in that situation. How do you guys leave your tip? Just leave cash on the counter?
I think we've talked about this before, but I'm still never sure what to do with counter service. I seem to eat out and/or use counter service restaurants a lot these days, and so many of them use those ipad things that ask you for a tip. Seems a bit odd to me. I tip sometimes, but not always.

Re: Tipping
How many of you who tip your housekeeper actually look closely to see how clean the hotel room is when you start? I mean, just take a quick peek under the bed or behind the nightstand. Maybe put a scrap of paper or something else small on the carpet in the morning before you leave and see if it is still there when you get back after the room has been cleaned.
I've had stays where there have been minor issues (bottle cap under the bed or the like), but I also stayed in a Vegas casino (MGM, I think) where there was a bag from In and Out that was who knows how old wedged behind the nightstand from before my stay and I had been there for several days before finding it.

If I stay 1-3 days, I usually leave a fiver on the dresser. If service is really good, then a bit more. If the service sucks, then nothing at all (but it has to be bad for that, because they are doing a shit job for low wages.)

Re: Tipping
I work overnight on business a lot and I've never tipped housekeeping. If I'm on vacation and we stay in the same place for a few days I'll leave housekeeping something at the end of the trip. I suppose I always looked at the one-and-dones as a service. I'm paying for the hotel room for the night, not for you to take care of me during my stay.
I know that's a shit job for low pay, but when it comes to the original thing, I'm so sticky about tipping bartenders and servers and the like because it's legal to pay them $2.13/hr here. I know minimum wage sucks, but at least it's minimum wage. You aren't tipping the stock boy at Walmart for keeping cans on the shelf.
Side note, if you're ever feeling extra generous at a bar or restaurant, buy the kitchen staff a beer or two. Ask if it's not listed on the menu. Normally they'll give you a cut rate and it makes those guys' night better, plus you may get a little something extra.

Yeah, it is one of those things on a one nighter that you're actually paying for whoever got your room READY not who is going to clean it. Which brings back the potential that it isn't the right person. But I just figure it all comes out in the wash.BSF21 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 11, 2019 10:06 am I work overnight on business a lot and I've never tipped housekeeping. Re: Tipping
I just witnessed one of the most egregious undertips in history. Was waiting to pay for lunch at a Mexican joint (Bourbon Chasers know the place!) and a lady skipped in front of me to hand her bill to the cashier. Since she was paying cash, really didn't matter, but when I got up there to pay my own with a card, I saw the bill and her money. She had a $10 bill and a quarter laid down. The bill was for 9.79. So a 46 cent tip. Now why is that more egregious than just laying the ten dollar bill down, you may ask?
I'll tell you why...because she looked at the bill, said, oh, 21 cents isn't enough. I'll drop an extra quarter on there and call it good. I legit think that's worse than no tip at all.

I find it hilarious the justifications that people use to not tip when the only plausible reasons why you wouldn't at least conform to basic societal norms are that either you're a horrible person and/or cheap. That's it. End of list*
* - And if the argument is that you can't afford to tip then you can't afford to eat out or buy coffee from Starbucks or whatever. There are cheaper options like preparing your own food or coffee yourself.

Re: Tipping
My father has about a million bad traits that piss me off these days, but God bless him, he is a generous tipper, for all the right reasons. So at least he has that going for him, which is nice.
A lot of times my wife and I will go out to dinner with another couple and each put down a credit card. Usually the other husband and I will agree on a tip so we each give the same amount. That backfired on me recently, when we ate for the first time with one couple and the other guy had already finished signing his tab and told me how much he determined we should each tip. Unfortunately it was woefully lacking and would have been embarrassing if not insulting. My wife sized it up and silently dropped a makeup amount on the table as we departed.
