Indeed. John Singleton came to speak at Wash U when I was there, probably not more than a year after Boyz n the Hood came out. It was crazy to see how young he was - just a couple of years older than me at the time. Unfortunately, he never made another movie nearly as good. Hard to believe he died so young.

Yeah ... especially when you read his obit and find out he's younger than you are.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Gino Marchetti

Baltimore Colts Hall of Famer. I vividly remember my late father being star struck meeting him at a restaurant in Baltimore. I was probably 6 or 7. Nice memory.

Guy fought at the Battle of the Bulge. Marchetti, not Jerry Lichter.

Wow!
Between 1954-64, he made the Pro Bowl every season. Starting in 1957, he made first-team All-Pro seven times in eight seasons. He was named the best defensive end of the NFL’s first 50 seasons. He was one of three defensive ends on the NFL’s 75th anniversary team, along with Reggie White and Deacon Jones.

When I was a kid, the Leafs and Flyers played a couple of epic playoff series. The Broad Street Bullies were the nastiest team you've ever seen. Leafs were pretty dirty too (as were most teams of that era) but nowhere near as bad.

Anyway, Kelly was responsible for one of the most bizarre coaching moves in history...

Very obscure, but what a life...

Susan Beschta, Punk Rocker Turned Judge, Is Dead at 67
Susan Beschta, who performed in the 1970s art-punk band the Erasers as the frontwoman Susan Springfield before taking an unlikely career turn, becoming a human rights lawyer and then an immigration judge, died on May 2 in hospice care in Manhattan. She was 67.

A close friend, Sylvia Reed, said the cause was brain cancer.

If a life is a journey, Ms. Beschta’s was full of twists and turns, geographically and vocationally. After growing up in Wisconsin, a stint at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a brief period living in Berkeley, Calif., she hitchhiked across the country to New York with dreams of becoming a fine artist.

In the 1970s, when punk rock burst loudly on the music world, Ms. Beschta, a self-taught guitarist and vocalist, could be found in crowded, raucous downtown Manhattan nightclubs belting out attitude-laced three-chord rockers in the Patti Smith vein.

By the end of the ’80s she had gone in a completely new direction, earning a law degree and working for a charity representing abuse victims and immigrants.

By the early 2000s she was a federal government lawyer in New York handling immigration cases. And by early this year she had become a federal judge, also in New York — not long after she learned of her cancer diagnosis.

That's a shame - loved his voice and he usually had interesting things to say about a fight.

Also, Harold Lederman is the father of Julie Lederman who judges a ton of big fights. That's her on the right...

Back in the 70s when there were a hell of a lot less TV options or celebrities, she was all over the place.

I remember her from "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and just fell into a rabbit hole where I found the original cinematic trailer for the movie. Can you imagine a trailer being done like this nowadays?

Former ESPN ombudsman Le Anne Schreiber.

I remember reading her columns and going "Wow, someone is calling out the shenanigans of this company and the company put it on the front page?" Makes me hate all the shouty heads talking bullshit all over again.

And it shows how desensitized we've become as a society when we as watchers of sports have dealt with these shouty heads for so long.

Former Arsenal starlet Jose Antonio Reyes died in a fiery car wreck driving 135mph. He was the first Arsenal signing I was excited about, and he could be a damned exciting player, but never fully panned out at Arsenal, and was supposedly homesick and begged for a loan spell at Madrid and a career in Spain. Surprised to hear he was 35yo, and eve more surprised to hear he was still playing professionally. Last couple years he bounced around Spain, China and was playing in the second division. Kind of sad he was still hanging on.

Team made the Super Bowl 7 times and won 3 of them, since he bought the team in 1984. Elected to the HoF this year. He ran marathons and triathlons when he was younger. Gave up management of the team a couple years ago as signs of dementia took hold.
