I just read his obituary in the NY Times, and I had completely forgotten about the Not-At-All-Subtle racism about how he was 'lazy' and loafing before he had the stroke.

i was only ~10 when JR Richard had his stroke and still I remember him well - I likely only "saw" him pitch on TV a handful of times live in those pre-cable days :) but he was absolutely legendary, and maybe/likely more-so because most of what we had were just stories. That 1980 All-Star game start where I think he whiffed Reggie (Even as an "AL fan" I hated that MF way more than a 10yr old should hate someone haha) was awesome. He was one of my favourites and it was such a shock when suddenly ... it was just all over.

And I definitely recall the whispers of him being "lazy" .... .....

I'm no Astros fan but I own a JR Richard throwback jersey - wore it the other day out at the grocery store. I like to think at least one other person noticed. :)

My cousin's daughter (first cousin once removed?) just posted on Facebook something about being released from FB jail and joking that she will no doubt be removed shortly for "telling the truth." Not sure what got her suspended, but I'd wager it was anti-vax propaganda or making fun of the sheeple who wear masks. I particularly enjoy her bragging that she never wears a mask or got a vaccine, and she had COVID and survived, so she is smarter than everyone. After years of her bitching about how DiBlasio and Cuomo destroyed her City (she lives an hour outside NYC on the Eastern end of Long Island and has never lived anywhere else) and saying she is leaving, she is actually moving to Texas. Can't believe she is actually doing anything other than bitching.

You must be fortunate to have never been there before. Western LI is problematic in a much different way, but Eastern LI'ers are somehow hillbillies in a densely populated area. I like D's Future Florida comment, but it's almost like a blend of the worst aspects of hillbillies and Jersey Shore caricatures. I never understood the stories of how my grandparents shunned my Aunt for marrying a goyim (until she had her first child), but seeing how the bloodline was ruined two generations down the line, they were right. I need to find the right phrasing to make a joke to my mother about this, but that's a tightrope walk. [one cousin and his kids are like this, the other cousin and his kids are lovely].

To tie in our LGBTQ acceptance discussion, my horrible cousin has a daughter who married a woman and they now have 2 kids together. From what I gather, all her horrible MAGA siblings perfectly accept her and her wife. The FB troll actually posts a lot of pro-LGBTQ activism type posts. I wonder if they would have been so open to homosexuality prior to knowing their sister/daughter was a lesbian? I'd bet it's the typical Conservative pattern where they are against people or some sort of equality or benefits until they are personally touched by it. [See our discussion on Meghan McCain suddenly realize women should be guaranteed paid maternity leave after she has a baby, because before, how could she have known women need time off and most people can't afford to lose their paycheck?]

I can't think of any others that would be in the conversation with the Manningses and Espositos. Maybe the Waners since they're both in the HOF, but we've never actually seen them. I guess the next tier would be the Sedins, Barbers, Matthewses (Bruce and Clay Jr.), Alomars, Martinezes (Pedro and Ramon), Gasols, Wilkinses.
