When I was a kid in the 1970s, I was into hard rock, and my favorite band was UFO.

In news that may only interest me (and, well, maybe DiS), the bassist for UFO, Pete Way, has passed away. He was known for his wild striped trousers that became widely imitated, as well as his frenetic activity on stage.

Never a fan, but anyone who gets eulogized like this must have done something right:

Super obscure, but quite a story:

Marvin Creamer, a Mariner Who Sailed Like the Ancients, Dies at 104
His expertise helped him become a history-making mariner, the first recorded person to sail round the world without navigational instruments. His 30,000-mile odyssey, in a 36-foot cutter with a small crew, made headlines worldwide on its completion in 1984.

“I was considered to be crazy or stupid or just out of it,” Professor Creamer said in a 2015 interview with Rowan University. “When I took off there were two people who believed I would come back.”

One was his wife Blanche. The other, despite the welter of naysayers, was Professor Creamer himself.

I don't think I'd go out on a lake in that boat...let alone around the world with no navigation instruments.

Wow, he's a few year's younger than me.

Hawerchuk was a really good NHL player. Didn't get a lot of publicity up there in the 'Peg.

yeah - damn. 57! i would be comfortable calling him an all-time great.

That division was hell in the 80s with Edmonton and Calgary pretty much being 2 of the top 3 teams every single season, and the Jets with essentially zero way through the playoffs so he didn't get as much hype as he likely deserved since the Jets never played for long in the spring, if at all. As for Dale, he had the misfortune of being in the league when you had the two best centers to ever play the game in their prime as well. Hawerchuk in any other decade is in everyone's automatic inner-circle pantheon.

As for him as a person, here's a really lovely story:

I remember Hawerchuk more as a Sabre than a Jet. Looking at his career stats, I was shocked at his goal and point totals with the Jets. Damn impressive.

The greatest line in hockey history - Gretzky, Lemieux and Hawerchuk in the 1987 Canada Cup.

57? Fuck.

My exact reaction. I didn't really become a true NHL fan until the late 80s and then it took off when solid video games started spreading my knowledge of players around the league.

One of my all time favorite teams was the Sabres from the early 90s. They didn't have the deepest team, but with Mogilny, LaFontaine, Hawerchuk and Andrewchuk... Their top 2 lines were wicked. Plus, they had Grant Furh and Hasek in net.

yeah i had super nintendo and the NHL93 Sabres were just filthy.

so essentially the answer to Buffalo fans is that we should really just move everything over to eSports and we'll finally get that elusive title. I'm down.

LaFontaine was my all-time favorite player in any sport. The day the Islanders traded him crushed my world. Didn't help that they also trade Brent Sutter on the same damned day.

Best live hockey experience was sitting the second row, directly behind Hasek's net for two periods. Dude was so unorthodox in his technique, it was amazing sitting right behind him.

He was great but got bonus appreciation for being different in technique and helmet choice.

Fuck, Justin Townes Earle died. Steve's son. Great songwriter in his own right. He was supposed to play Tampa, but got COVID cancelled. I kept seeing alerts from Bands in Town that it had been rescheduled. Hadn't listened to him in a while, but he had some great songs, including a fantastic cover of Can't Hardly Wait by the Mats.

Damn...too young....

Great appearance on Letterman...with a young (and doughy) Jason Isbell on lead.

Very sad news. The media focuses on his more famous father, the great Steve Earle. But, JTE was very good in his own right.
