something never expected in 2021.... a "new" album from The Hip out this morning...

holyshit - they unearthed 6 tunes from the 1991 Road Apples sessions (5 studio, 1 live) - fully mixed and mastered them and here we go...

Pretty nice surprise. I love their guitar tone mixed with Gord's voice.

indeed. This was really when they found their stride, definitely the more raw sound. Road Apples was the first album where I discovered the band, so to hear these is just awesome.

At this point, unlike the Paste Indie Folk one, I'm really regretting this decision, but will power through.
OK 90-81 have been a lot better on the whole. Really enjoying this one a lot.

For the last two weeks I've been doing this:

https://1001albumsgenerator.com/

...actually has been great, they randomly give you one album each morning to listen to, you can write a little blurb about it, rate it from 1-5, then it refreshes the next morning.

my 15yr old daughter agreed to do it with me so we each listen and have a little chat about the albums at night (you can create a group so you can get the same album together). Of course by the time we're done she'll be in college (....shit....).

I haven't liked them all but it's nice to put a new ear on some things i either overlooked or didn't like 20 yrs ago. Would like some newer (e.g. post 2000 even) stuff to pop up but thus far have only had pre-1990. i guess i have about 985 more to go so there's time....

Might do something similar with the Pitchfork 10s albums.

True Blue is an absolute 80's banger of an album. I always think only of La Isla Bonita when I think of that album, but it also has Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, Live to Tell, Where's the Party, and True Blue. It's a sneakily great album.

Crazy we were talking about Madonna on the way to the state park on Friday, specifically this album and Like a Prayer. The wife tried to convince me the video with the kid in the nudie theatre was Express Yourself and I had to very carefully explained how I know for a god damn fact that it's not Express Yourself because I used to pen pal my brother 8 times a day to that video in 1990.

I'm about 20 minutes into track Drei. Waiting on the bone-in chicken to finish up in the oven (LeCreusets for the win). Wife is probably ten minutes from telling me to turn this ... off.

So saw a bunch of articles about Steve Cropper. Just assumed he was going to the obscure thread. But actually put out a new album. Not bad.

I knew him from the Blues Brothers. Knew that the band was an all-star group behind comedians. Knew they played with everyone as studio and touring musicians. Did not realize he was a hit maker and the songs he wrote.

Yes. Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Donald (Duck) Dunn, and Al Jackson. The Stax Records' house band. One of the first truly racially integrated bands in popular music.

Steve Cropper produced a lot of big name albums, too, by a really diverse group of artists such as Otis Redding, Poco, Jeff Beck, John Prine, John Mellencamp, and many more.

The new Black Keys' album "Delta Kream" is great if you're a fan of the old Fat Possum lineup. RL Burnside, Jr. Kimbrough along with other old timers are covered.

There was an article about her on The Ringer a couple of days ago: It’s Already a Michelle Zauner Summer that is worth checking out.

And yes, the album is great. And supposedly her book is really good as well.
