I've been listening to a lot of progressive rock/Canterbury scene lately. Digging Hatfield and the North

A song writing clinic in one masterpiece. One of my favorites to play on the Joycemaha because the 12-string guitar gives that rich deep sound and, yeah, that really is my vocal range. Down there. My tones. Lyrics below. Stan Rogers often started concerts with this song; small wonder, it is a real "now that I have your attention" piece. He doesn't stray far from Am-C-F and D. But it's how he drives the composition home, the chords and particularly the violin (see Garnet, below) move like the schooner itself tearing through the Atlantic Ocean. Brilliant. The violin also evokes the sea birds that followed her.

Stan Rogers. Bluenose

One more. Yes. I know it. I lived it. It's this. And when I lived in Alberta (deeply lamented, I miss it every moment of every day), at every gathering my friends from back east would cajole me "Scottie, play that song. You know the one." When I first went to Alberta to work roughneck in the oil patch out of Fort McMurray, it was easy to think Stan Rogers had written a song based on my own life but, of course, so many Nova Scotians and Newfoundlanders made their way to Alberta, often of necessity but always integrity driven. Hard work that. But far better than lying down; it's about every one of us that made that journey just to support our own existences.

This is a concert recording featuring Stan's brother, Garnet Rogers (himself a brilliant composer), on fiddle. Note the interesting decision to compose this song in a Morris Dance rhythm:

I often take these night shift walks when the foreman's not around.
I turn my back on the cooling stacks and make for open ground.
Far out beyond the tank farm fence where the gas flare makes no sound,
I forget the stink and I always think back to that Eastern town.

I remember back six years ago, this Western life I chose.
And every day, the news would say some factory's going to close.
Well, I could have stayed to take the Dole, but I'm not one of those.
I take nothing free, and that makes me an idiot, I suppose.

So I bid farewell to the Eastern town I never more will see;
But work I must so I eat this dust and breathe refinery.
Oh I miss the green and the woods and streams and I don't like cowboy clothes;
But I like being free and that makes me an idiot I suppose.

So come all you fine young fellows who've been beaten to the ground.
This western life's no paradise, but it's better than lying down.
Oh, the streets aren't clean, and there's nothing green, and the hills are dirty brown,
But the government Dole will rot your soul back there in your home town.

So bid farewell to the Eastern town you never more will see.
There's self-respect and a steady cheque in this refinery.
You will miss the green and the woods and streams and the dust will fill your nose.
But you'll be free, and just like me, an idiot, I suppose.

* * *

Bluenose

Once again with the tide she slips her lines
Turns her head and comes awake
Where she lay so still there at Privateer's Wharf
Now she quickly gathers way
She will range far south from the harbour mouth
And rejoice with every wave
Who will know the Bluenose in the sun

Feel her bow rise free of Mother Sea
In a sunburst cloud of spray
That stings the cheek while the rigging will speak
Of sea-miles gone away
She is always best under full press
Hard over as she'll lay
And who will know the Bluenose in the sun?

That proud, fast Queen of the Grand Banks Fleet
Portrayed on every dime
Knew hard work in her time...hard work in every line
The rich men's toys of the Gloucester boys
With their token bit of cod
They snapped their spars and strained to pass her by
But she left them all behind

Now her namesake daughter remains to show what she has been
What every schoolboy remembers and will not come again
To think she's the last of the Grand Banks Schooners
That fed so many men
And who will know the Bluenose in the sun?

So does she not take wing like a living thing
Child of the moving tide
See her pass with grace on the water's face
With clean and quiet pride
Our own tall ship of great renown still lifts unto the sky
Who will know the Bluenose in the sun?

Real bad news yesterday, as it was announced that Jason Molina of Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Company died at age 39. He had some real demons and made some real incredible music.

Speaking of SF, I almost died (traffic came to a sudden stop ahead of me, slammed the brakes, ended up swerving a bit to the right, and luckily the lady flying down the right lane in her Audi was paying attention (and driving an Audi?, QUATTRO!!!) and was able to miss me) with that fucking Foxygen song in my head yesterday.

I'd never heard that song before. I couldn't even make it through the video. How could that get stuck in your head?

If I've learned anything from the Swamp, Shirls, it's that a lot of songs that you can't stand seem to get stuck in people's heads.

Heard it on the radio a couple of minutes earlier.

OK, now this has been stuck in my head and I can't decide if it's accusatory mostly because I can't decide what you would be accusing "people" of.

I got about 41-seconds in to that before I shut it off. Fuckawful.

The female(?) response in the chorus is kind of catchy, but I guess you guys didn't make it that far.

Oddly enough, the Foxygen song was getting a bunch of airplay on the same station that is now playing The Mowglis.

Speaking of shitty shit that you can't get out of your head, I haven't been able to let go of this one for a few days (this ain't a real single, just something that Nathan Fielder put out there for chuckles before he made it semi-big).

Fantastic. Always fascinating to see a vid shot on streets that one knows well. That was great.

I do apologize though for posting something intended as comedy in a thread dedicated to good music. Just thought it was in line with the discussion.

Jeez, don't apologize; it's not like somebody posted "Set The Prairie On Fire" by Bob Andrechuk or something.

True. Though my post probably would have been better in a shitty music thread containing “Wheat of my Heart” or something along those lines. Bob was obviously a renaissance man in every sense of the word, but I think we both agree that “Wheat of my Heart” was not his finest work. It’s a shame that he sold out like that at the end. I suppose the man had to feed his family though, especially after his potash investments went south and he was left with almost nothing. That album was almost as bad as those awful Eaton’s commercials that he had to do to pay off his creditors. You can’t just take a Canadian icon like that and embarrass him for the sake of hawking a few shitty products. Some may disagree, but personally I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Eaton’s collapsed shortly after the national outrage that followed. Anyways, sorry for the tangent, you know I get a little fired up sometimes thinking about this subject.

I've had Morrisey's I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris in my head all day. Somehow it ended up on my iPod. I really don't remember putting it there. Plus it's all squaky. It sounds like I took it back in time, uploaded it to Napster, then downloaded it and brought it back.

I think I like this, too.

The new Iron and Wine album (Ghost on Ghost) is available on NPR's First Listen

Completely different than anything I&W/Sam Beam have done to date and yet...it's unmistakably I&W. Great album.

After AussieDave posted about seeing Springsteen, I went a bit nostalgic and sought out the Winterland San Francisco show (December 15, 1978), which is frankly brilliant. I thought the Passaic (Piece de Resistance) show was as good as Bruce got but I do believe this one tops it for sound quality (absolutely) and performance.

If anyone wants the links, PM me and I'll hook you up. It's about 300 megs.

ETA: If you're a music collector, it's a must have. I'd compare it to the National Film Registry's criteria for quality. In a heartbeat.

I'm not even going to consider starting a "confessions" thread for this one...

Justin Timberlakes 20/20 album is fucking awesome. The only thing that could improve it, is removing Jay Z from Suit & Tie.

Semi-related to this topic, I was doing some housekeeping (against my will, of course) and pulled out all of the old cd's that we have on the shelves in the bowels of our basement. Talk about shameful, there were some truly embarrassing titles in there. Mostly I blame my wife, though I am certainly not blameless. I am so glad that I finally got around to doing that before anybody else saw our full collection. Truly embarrassing stuff.

If I ever want to get rid of embarrassing CDs or DVDs in YVR, I'll just leave them on the passenger seat of my car with the door unlocked.
