Old spins

Post by howard »

Listening to a bunch of old shit from my yute. I was struck by how a complete POS band like Bread can spew a garbage easy listening hit like Everything I Own that grates the ears and the soul. But then someone like Boy George can cover it and make it awesome.

(This serves as a reminder that I claim no high horse when it comes to 'good' and 'bad' rock and roll, pop or any other music. Some of the shit I like is really fucking corny. I don't deny this; I like a lot of well-done pop music.)

Speaking of Boy George, it is well known that The Crying Game, another awesome record, was a UK hit in the 60s by a Brit teen idol, Dave Berry. But I was not informed that Little Miss Dynamite did this bit of wonder. Coming on strong, indeed:

Who knows? Maybe, you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away and held for ransom.

So, Bloodshot Records just re-released CDs of the first two albums by the Bottle Rockets, both from the mid 90s. (If howard can post old shit so can I.) The first, eponymous, album contains the great nugget embedded below. The second one, "The Brooklyn Side" was reviewed by AB, I recall, back in the glory days of the Swampe, when we had a record review thread. Ladies and Gents, led by Brian Henneman (Jeff Tweedy's guitar tech, back in the Uncle Tupelo days), the pride of Festus, Missouri, the Bottle Rockets!

I didn't realize he was part of the Drive By Truckers until the lists started coming out. Otherwise I would have listened to it sooner. good stuff. For some reason I prefer listening to bands over a solo artists. Given the choice of Jason Isbell vs The Drive By Truckers, i'd listen to drive by truckers . But solo artists like Andrew Bird and Sufjan Stevens have made me appreciate the go it alone artists a lot more.

The former. My guess is you'll see him mentioned a couple times.

And I'm sure my Facebook thing is a little self-indulgent. Or a lot. But I don't care. I always wanted to be Casey Kasem.

The Top 20 most Shazamed songs during TV shows during last year.

Should be cross posted in the Walking Dead thread as the top three are all from it. (Lucero fans -- check out #2!)

Couple of awesome albums already this year from Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks (Wig Out at Jagbags) and Mogwai (Rave Tapes). So bummed I'm going to miss Mogwai in Las Vegas in April (consolation is I'll be in San Diego watching the Tigers play the Padres).

I use Shazam all the time to track down songs & artists I don't recognize on the radio. But I never thought to use it for a song in a tv show or movie, I usually google those. Amazing how those blind spots can form in my head.

Steven Hyden wrote about this band on Grantland this week, The War on Drugs.

I'm really enjoying what I've listened to from this band on Spotify.

I've seen them a couple of times. They're really good live. I've tried to get into their albums, with mixed results. Probably haven't heard their latest though.

Can't get this one out of my head. Powerful use of news footage in the background. She is so cute, too! She did NIN Closer. Seeing her sing "I want to fuck you like an animal" was pretty hot. She plays a mean guitar, too. There is a video from a live show where she takes requests from the crowd, like improv, and blends one song into the next. Her guitar and bass while doing Marilyn Manson's Beautiful people was pretty cool. first time I have ever considered donating to someone's kickstarter.

You won't be disappointed. Though I haven't seen them since they kicked John Neff out. I gotta admit I always loved that triple ax attack. Not too many rock bands have three guitarists these days.

I highly recommend Sun Kil Moon's latest (Benji). Just absolutely gobsmackingly incredible. One of those albums I can't be doing anything while listening to because I just want to get lost in it. I won't even play it in my car because I'm worried I'll just drift off and stop paying attention to the road.

She's very impressive and I love her choice of covers, but I couldn't help but think her voice is just too sunny for Closer and Heart-Shaped Box. Both covers were missing the angst and pain of the originals.
Totally Kafkaesque
