Pretty solid in a Buzzcocky sort of way.

Good way to describe it. And, damn. Superchunk has been around a long time, now!

Rage Against The Machine being eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame really makes me feel older than most of the other nominees for some reason and I can't really put my finger on why. Maybe because their debut album kind of came out of nowhere compared to a band like Radiohead (who were following in the footsteps of Britpop bands like Oasis, Blur, etc. -- even if Radiohead then and now would prove to be vastly superior.)

But I'll always have a soft spot for RATM. How can you not love a band whose record label (Sony) asked them to contribute a song for the soundtrack of Godzilla, a summer blockbuster being produced by Sony and they offered the song No Shelter, which had these lyrics:

Hospitals not profit full
Yet market bulls got pockets full
To advertise some hip disguise
View the world from American eyes
The poor adore keep fiendin' for more
The thin line between entertainment and war
They fix the need, develop the taste
Buy their products or get laid to waste
Coca-Cola is back in the veins of Saigon
And Rambo too, he got a dope pair of Nikes on
Godzilla, pure motherfucking filler
To keep ya eyes off the real killer...

Cinema, simulated life, ill drama
Fourth Reich culture, Americana
Chained to the dream they got ya searchin' for
The thin line between entertainment and war

(Though to their credit, Sony put the song on the soundtrack.)

Think it says something that pretty much every side project by a member of Bon Iver is pretty awesome. I really dig this song.

Bon Iver - Justin Vernon + a dash of Americana

I'd add "+ Red House Painters" to your equation.

Also, that's quite a lot of Packers imagery for a Lions fan to be posting.

This is kinda interesting (and a quick cautionary tale about getting caught up in either labeling certain types of music or reading too much into the way some music writers are constantly trying to spin a narrative).

10. The only song on this list I had to look up to know what it was
9. ... something is just off with them like you can hear their sellout turn happening before it happens or something
8. I hate this song
7. Really good (and I was sure it was Japandroids for a few months)
6. Is part of a weird trend of older bands still making solid music
5. Sucks
4. Really, really good (and I was sure it was Carseat Headrest for a few months)
3. The good version of a band who I probably dislike as often as I like
2. Top 5 song this year for me
1. How was it only played 36 times?

Fill in DJ's generally don't play the Friday Song. And if they are doing a special day (like International Clash Day, for example) they'll skip it as well.

I love this song by The Hold Steady. I also love old songs by The Jim Carroll Band. I'm pretty sure Craig Finn loves them, too, given the similarities.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor announces a west coast tour swing and I've got myself talked into going to one of the shows, but not sure which one. Thinking I might fly up to Denver for the Saturday 5/19 show at the Ogden but could also drive to PHX, LA or San Diego.

The Ogden is a great little venue (holds less than 2000 people.)

That one (especially since it's a Saturday show) would be a no-brainer except I've already got myself talked into flying to Denver in August for Lucero and Frank Turner at Red Rocks. Still might do it anyway since r/t flights to Denver are about $130 on Southwest.

I'll be there for sure. Let me know if you can make it happen. (FYI, they sold out the Ogden last time here.)

Tix go on sale Friday so I might have to not drag my feet on this one. I'm definitely leaning Denver. I'll let you know.

I elected to do the PHX show since I have a couple of friends down there I haven't seen in a while and it'll be cheaper. But I'm 80-90 percent coming out in August for that Lucero show so I might see if you, Rush or some of the other Denver/Boulder people are around for that weekend (first weekend in August I believe)

Wow. That reminds me of a time when there was at least an 'ok' mass of videos that attempted an artistic interpretation of the song being aired on MTV.

Impactful stuff.

Got offered a ticket to see a Cambodian psych-rock group tonight, but I'm too wiped from my week in STL. Still, I was intrigued enough to check it out on Spotify and they're pretty good!

Kind of a Calexico meets The Black Angels but with a chick singing in Khmer.

Nice! The next two up in rotation...

But first - Seun Kuti's New Album

His previous one was good, the one before that was damned excellent ("Rise" produced by Eno). So far the new one is really good. Politics as subtle as a sledgehammer, but excellent modern Afro Funk.

New Decemberists album is up on NPR First Listen.

First thoughts are this will probably be my favorite album of 2018. It's going to take something pretty amazing to top it. The first track "Once In My Life" seems like it should be a (great) Iron & Wine song and Meloy just sells the hell out of it.

Love the 80s synths. Love literally almost everything about it.
