The new songs I heard were fucking great.

Really, really liking this Angel Olson album (All Mirrors). Probably would be my favorite album of 2019 that I've heard so far. I read there's two versions of the album and the same songs stripped down are going to be released later this year, but the versions with the orchestra are pretty freaking awesome.

Julia, take your man home
He's just sitting at the bar
Carving shapes that look like dicks into the wood
Julia, take your man home
He keeps running in and out of the street
With a weed between his teeth he calls a rose
Julia, take your man home
He keeps talking about New Jersey and cocaine
And some person he keeps saying is made of glass

Man I was so excited when you posted this and gave it a listen and...I really don't like it. I wanted to though! Should be right up my alley.

This is The Chicago Tribune's one-star review of Radiohead's The Bends. Think this guy wants this one back?
Along with Beck's "Loser," Radiohead's smash single "Creep" made up a sort of low self-esteem hit parade for disaffected pop fans. Lacking that dubious appeal, there's little on the British group's second record to suggest they'll be more than one-hit wonders. Thom Yorke's ethereal vocals and woebegone melodies are tuneful enough, but too self-absorbed to be catchy. The sweeping, extravagant choruses and Seattle wanna-be guitar parts are similarly heavy-handed and excessive: the clumsy, unpleasant guitar scorch of "Bones" and "My Iron Lung" are particularly cringe-inducing. If the band had dispensed with the grandiose dramatic effects, songs like "The Bends" and "Black Star" could have been catchy little rockers. Instead, Radiohead's overwrought, pompous music makes them sound like alternative rock`s answer to the Moody Blues.

And yes, it has the link to his Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7Lxqh ... s7Yj6htVHA

My daughter is in the middle of gymnastics season, which means every thursday night and most saturday afternoons I spent a couple of hours here: https://diamondknot.com/brewbrewpubmlt and I swear everytime I'm in here, I here the same 5 Dead songs playing on the Jukebox...Touch of Grey, Friend of the Devil, Truckin, Sugar Magnolia, and Scarlet Begonias. It never fails. Its so strange.

And then it changes to Bob Marley....

L-Jam3 wrote: Thu Aug 29, 2019 7:17 am I know a lot of you guys are fans, but fuck Weezer when they do a cover. I'm driving in, and I hear a cover of "Billie Jean", and I said to myself, "this has to be Weezer, this is arranged just like the original". I can't stand that shit. Every cover doesn't have to be IZ or Johnny Cash, but the difference between that and Chris Cornell's cover is that there's something new or different. When Weezer covers, it's exactly just the same song. That's the musical equivalent of jerking it into a sock. Even Marilyn Manson puts his own spin on his covers. If there's such a thing a hate-listen, I did that all last summer with their bullshit cover of "Africa". It's not fucking cute.

Fuck you, Rivers Cuomo. And while you're at it, fuck Ryan Adams, too, for that cheeseball cover of Taylor Swift's album.
Speaking of covers ...

(There's something offputting about the youtube music "videos" that are just a stationary picture. Really ruins it.)

Yeah, I'm going to miss the Isbell/Strand shows in STL by one week, so looks like I'll have to go up to Reno for the show up there, though trading the temps here for up there for a few days is a win-win for me.

Sturgill Simpson...not a fan of the music business.

Sturgill Simpson Has A Lot To Get Off His Chest
I’m done working for them. I’m done giving babies away. I equate it to, if you owned a fucking dry cleaners, and it took off, and somebody showed up like, “Hey, we want to buy your dry cleaners. You can sit here and run the counter, but we’ll keep all the money.” Like, what other business model would anybody fucking think that makes sense in? And honestly, I don’t really see what they’ve done that I couldn’t have done myself, probably better. They haven’t delivered on any of their promises, so I’m fucking done there. But they wanted me to promote the tour, so here we are.

Last night I was in bed half asleep and I think I had the show High Maintenance on and I heard a song that just kept going "Ain't that a kick in the heart" and it's still in my head. I think I might like it. The Googles only gives me an "Aint that a kick in the head" by Dean Martin. Does anyone know a song where they say "Ain't that a kick in the heart" over and over?

Didn't really think he was that cool when I shared a dorm with him freshman year, but opinions vary.

Waaaiiiiiiit ... what? Go on.

(I could totally see him not being cool one way or the other, given he's from NJ, but those first two albums are nearing 2 decades old and they still hold up.)

He lived in my dorm freshman year, same wing, but different floor. There were something like 650-700 students in the dorm, so I did not know him at all other than through a couple conversations with his roommate (they were a mismatched pair, like so many freshmen dorm assignments.

I am 99% sure I still have the incoming freshman directory somewhere and his high school senior picture is in it, if memory serves correctly.

Released 30 years ago today.
If you (the royal you) haven't already (and why haven't you?) read the book the excerpt came from. After all this quote below is funny enough as it is, but it's 10x funnier if you know the context.
To be fair … me, Adam, and Mike were sitting in that meeting obviously high as kites and dressed in our best Madilyn Grasshoff outfits, looking like we were on our way to a Cymande concert. I’m sure the lack of confidence was mutual.
rass wrote: Thu Jul 25, 2019 11:41 am I've been saving it for beach reading next month.

I forgot to bring it to the beach last summer, and very slowly (no fault of the book) made my way through it and just finished. That was so great. If you’ve got any affection for them at all I couldn’t recommend it more.
