You guys, this GQ article on Jason Isbell is awesome. If you already like him, you'll like him more. If you don't like him, there may not be hope for you.

An example:

Isbell is specific about engines and cars and guitars in particular. He is wary about what success has brought him. “It's easy for a lot of folks, and very tempting, to just say, ‘Hey, me and my people are taken care of. I'm fine.’ And that's just the road to ruin, if you ask me. You lose your art that way.” But last year he did allow himself one extravagance, when a chance presented itself to buy one of the most famous guitars ever made: a 1959 Les Paul formerly owned by Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ed King. Isbell bought the guitar, known to the world as Redeye, from King's widow. “It was a ridiculous purchase, and I had to play a bunch of weird birthday parties and shit to cover it, so nobody else was affected by the ridiculousness of my guitar purchase,” he said. “But I'm so happy that I did it, because, you know, I don't go in there and polish the Grammys every day, but if I'm home and I have a minute, I take out the Redeye and play it. It sounds like I wanted my guitar to sound when I was 15 in Green Hill. ”

Emphasis mine.

Ok, where do I start with Isbell? (I'm an album guy.)

Southeastern and then sequentially (by release date moving to current day) from there. Then go back and check out his stuff before he got sober (i.e. before Southeastern). There's some diamonds in there as well.

Exactly this. I'd also add that he's released stuff as Jason Isbell, and he's also released stuff as Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit (his backing band). Spotify categorizes these entitites as separate. Brian's point remains: start with Southeastern and move sequentially, (Something More Than Free, then The Nashville Sound).

Ok, definitely prefer the more upbeat / multi-instrument-arranged songs. The sadboi folk jams are tough for me to sit through.

Here’s my idea. Put on Live from Alabama, crank it to 11, enjoy.

Southeastern is hard for me to listen to all the way through, but if the songs come up on my shuffle, there's not one I'd skip.

You definitely have to be in a certain mood for a song like "Elephant" from Southeastern but it's an exquisite song.

Until their latest album, I'm pretty sure I'd never heard a Nada Surf not named "Popular". That song is awful, so I'm surprised how much I really enjoy their newest one.

That was really nice!

(BONUS - the next video that YT auto-played for me after that was an interview with the two of them, and their lazy, old dogs were draped across the couch behind them)

KEXP had a Live DJ set this morning...from the DJ's front lawn. Pretty hilarious.

For the subset of people on here that both listen to artists who have Bandcamp pages and purchase media/merch, BC is giving artists 100% of the cut from sales today.

This not my favorite song, but it's the closest to my platonic ideal of a pop song. See if you're not pumping your fist in the air by the end of the song.

Also there’s something to be said for listening to an album from start to finish like the old days. Just put on track 1 and go.

Love doing this when I’m cutting grass or another task I know will be album length.

Same. With the exception of “Shiny Happy People”, I’m an album completist.

Oh man I am a big completist. If I don’t think I can finish it, I won’t start one.

I once drove from College Station to St. Louis and didn’t skip a damn song. About 8 hours in it became a thing and I had to see it through.

It is short. And I’m through two listens. I need it to marinate. Couple of songs that I like a lot but some that I need to grow on me. I also didn’t love southeastern the first few times I listened.

I watched that yesterday. It's great, and the songs I didn't love on my first few listens (Runnin with our Eyes Closed and Be Afraid) I liked better stripped down.
