Shirley wrote: Tue Aug 11, 2020 10:40 am I decided to give The National - Boxer another try on Spotify because it's been a few years and some of you folks here seem to love it so much. And I have to say, listening to it again ... it's profoundly boring. It's clearly well-crafted and thoughtful, so I have to assume that Profoundly Boring is what they were going for. So, I guess they nailed it.
I would (honestly) love it if you listened again this week and then a couple times next week and see if anything changes. Almost every superfan of the band I know had an album that grew on them until they were fully hooked versus being instantly in love with a song then running through the entire catalog with the same enthusiasm.
Wouldn't hurt to listen with headphones on as well, at least once.

We also might need a control group here, so someone who is a decade younger and not yet with kids. I think there's a lot to be said for growing up at the same pace, a la "How I Met Your Mother".

She's not wrong. Of course, her most recent nearly put me to sleep so insert shrug emoji.

I saw that on Twitter...and then saw a bunch of posts about how white artists doing covers of hip-hop songs is cultural appropriation.

Really?

Go to the artists page, click the meatballs, select "do not play this artist"

Two of these things are vastly overrated. The other is an actual bridge.

I'm sure you'll love Phoebe Bridgers when she puts out her 4th album and I'm like "eh, this is a big departure, I like the older stuff better".

A posthumous Jason Molina album is both well-needed and somehow timely. Even though the songs are all a decade old, seems like they were written under Trump. (Like "Be Told The Truth").

Rolling Stone updated their Top 500 Albums list for the first time in nearly a decade. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/musi ... e-1062063/

Interesting choice of What's Going On as #1 overall. I've listened to it before, but it didn't really knock my socks off. I'm gonna give it another spin. Of course, I'd say the same about Pet Sounds at #2; that one's just never done it for me.

Comedian Josh Adam Meyers has been hosting a podcast called "The 500" for a couple of years already. Every week, he has a guest talk about one of the albums on the Rolling Stone top 500 list, working their way up to #1.

When he started that podcast, I gave it a try (and posted about it on here).

Great idea...but I don't find the host at all interesting or funny.

Couldn't he just do all the new ones added to the current through 500 range then pick back up, skipping the risers? This is fixable, Josh!

I have 1000 percent more respect for a band like The Cult than I do some derivative crap like Greta Van Fleet that just apes second-tier bands like The Cult 30 years later to all kinds of praise for some goddamned reason.

As a young Led Zeppelin fan when The Cult came on the scene, I felt the same way about them then. I guess the story repeats.

So not that fun story time but I'm in Frankenmuth, MI last year before the troubles working a convention. The MGWA had rented the Bavarian Inn in town (guys look this shit up, it's the most touristy trap town that's ever tourist trapped). Everything in this town is German/Christmas themed. EVERY. THING. Except one bar, right on the strip in town. Dive-ass joint that I've been to 3-4 times because it's the only place that feels normal in that stupid town.

So I'm drinking at the (standing only) bar, watching hockey and shooting the shit with the bartenders, it's a Tuesday/Wednesday night so the place is dead. We're chatting and trading shots and I start in on this stupid town, say something like "no one is FROM Frankenmuth, you just work here or get stuck here". And one of the bartenders goes in on it with me. And the other bartender in a fun way goes, "hey, I'M FROM Frankenmuth!!!". And we razz him and I get up on a stool and shout to the 3 people in this huge bar, "holy shit guys! We found him! The OG from the Frank! He exists!". And we all fall out laughing and I buy him a beer.

Cut to an hour later and he goes "hey, you know we're not all tourists. Gretta Van Fleet is from here. I went to High School with one of the guys." And I confessed to him I have never heard of this band. And he goes IN. They're great, they're our claim to fame, yaddayadda. He gets his phone out and plays some tune and I just look at him and said "so they're a Zeppelin cover band? Cool." Insult the man's home, insult the man's workplace - not a problem, laugh it off. Insult Gretta Van Fleet? Oh boy I spent the next 20 minutes apologizing. They LOVE them some Gretta.

Moral of the story, Frankenmuth sucks.
