I probably follow the LCS more than any other sport besides the NFL.

Is it as simple as watching other people play video games? Like is it how people watch sports where "I enjoy this game and enjoy watching people who play it at the highest level"? Is there apparel?

I play way more video games than I should, and I have absolutely zero interest in watching other random people play them.

Pretty much sums it up. They have a season and a true world championship. Worlds will include three teams from NA, EU, China, Korea, South East Asia and then a wild card team from another region. One has been from Brazil, another from Turkey. There is apparel for the teams and for each region. The teams also sell their own apparel from their websites. The leagues are set up in relegation formats. In NA and EU you have the LCS (League Championship Series) and then the NALCS Challenger Series. Worse team each split is relegated to the challenger series and the top challenger team is promoted. Then they have a six team tourney for two spots in the LCS. It is still in its infancy and lots of teams disband after a split or season. But most of the players stay the same, just on different teams possibly.

I don't follow the other regions all that much, but the Chinese and Koreans teams are usually fighting it out for tops at worlds. There is also a lot of cross region players. Either not good enough to play in Korea and/or China so they come to either NA or EU. There are also some EU players on NA teams.

I enjoy watching them play the game, plus it gives me tips on how to become better myself.

I am pretty sure degen posted the promo for last years worlds. Imagine Dragons did the song. Worlds are an extremely big deal and have very high production at the site and also on caster desk and analyst desks. Just like you would have for any of the big four.

And this is just for League of Legends. StarCraft is huge also, along with CS:GO, Hearthstone, and many others. Many of the big name sponsors have teams in each of the different games. There is large amounts of sponsorship money out there for these teams.

The World Golf Tour is about the best one I can find and it is fairly limited unless you want to spend a whole lot to upgrade your equipment/unlock all the courses. Good for killing time, but not for any kind of immersive experience.

I watched two guys play crazy fantasy Mario levels at the Nintendo World Championships for about an hour last week and it was freaking great.

The greatest thing on the internet right now is the staff of Giant Bomb (gaming website) creating Mario Maker levels with the help of chat room suggestions and then one of their friends and former co-workers trying to beat them

There's a puzzle game for the iPad called Monument Valley that's all sorts of cool. Downside is you can finish the first set of free levels in about an hour or two, and you have to pay some money (just a couple of bucks) for other levels.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Splatoon 2. The new Mario coming out this Friday.

Heard great things about the new Zelda. There’s some good downloadable content as well. One getting high marks is a golf RPG game.

The switch is a lot of fun. And, as advertised, it’s a home based system as well as a portable. And the transition is seamless.

Mario and Zelda are must buys. If you have any fond memories of Mario 64 (I know that's a little new age for some of you even if the game is old enough to drink) Mario Odyssey is super awesome. It's really good for multiple levels of player skill. Mario Kart is fine. But you should definitely know you like Mario Kart ahead of time. Master Blaster is a sweet retro game that's actually good. If you REALLY liked Sonic growing up, Sonic Mania is good, but don't get it unless you are already a fan (execution of the game is good, but really specific for fans).

For people with larger hands the pro controller is a MUST BUY. Yes it's expensive, but it's 100% worth it.

So are video games nothing more than expensive products with a shit ton of micro transactions built in? I'm glad I don't play anymore.

I don't really play the types of games this describes, but basically, yeah. The M.O. of a lot of major publishers nowadays is to sell a new game for $60 that isn't really complete, sell what should have been the rest of the game as "downloadable content," plus in many cases "microtransactions" for in-game items. You can easily be looking at a bill well over $100 for a single game.

A lot of it is rooted in economic realities; the standard price for a major release has barely gone up in 30 years, while the costs of production have increased exponentially. Getting substantial revenue beyond the initial sale price is crucial to profitability, so you end up targeting the kids using their parents' credit cards and 35-year-old IT guys who spend their entire disposable income on this shit.

That makes total sense. It didn't even dawn on me that the price of games hasn't moved but the demand for the best graphics and gameplay are at an all time high. I get it.

I'm just glad I was terrible at games to the point I stopped playing them. (Save for the every so often Grand Theft Auto release.)
