Thanks! This was clearly the greatest golfing weekend of my life.
On the Friday round, I was hitting my driver and irons very well. I birdied two par 3s after hitting the tee shots to within five feet and making the birdie putts. I probably should've broken 80, but had some bad luck on a par 3 when my ball hit some hard pan behind the hole and bounced into the water. The three putt on that green didn't help matters, either. Still, I was pumped about shooting the 80, especially since it was a course I'd never played.
Saturday's round was at Hawthorne Valley CC, which is an old Donald Ross design. It's one of my favorite courses in the area, even though I've never scored well on it. I'd played it two Sundays ago and shot an 87, which was 10 strokes better than my previous best score on that course. But for Saturday's round, my good score was because of my short game. My chips and pitches were getting close to the hole, which made putting a lot easier. I had 27 putts for the round, which is a marked improvement over the mid-30s putts I usually have for an 18-hole round.
I also walked nine holes last night and shot a 42 at a local muni track. But the greens were in horrendous shape, and I can think of at least three putts that didn't go in because of how bumpy the greens were. I also had a chip that went right at the hole and hit the flagstick but didn't go it. So while my score didn't reflect it, my game was still pretty damn good.
And I really can't say I *destroyed* you, Mulligan. We've been playing golf together for damn near 25 years and before this weekend I'd only beaten you once. To beat you in both games was nice, but you weren't at the top of your game. When your swing is on, you're awfully damn hard to beat.

My bowling scores have plummeted. My summer league just finished last week, and I ended with a 176 average. I went a 20+ game stretch between games over 200. I need to refind my form!

not me but one of my buddies caddied at the LPGA Canadian Open last week. I didn't even know that some golfers on the LPGA can't afford a regular caddy and just get assigned one wherever they go.
excepts of an email he sent us. He caddied for Budsabakorn Sukapan (Thailand)
When I applied for the Pro-Am there was a place on the application to write in caddy experience. I said I had caddied in a few professional PGA of Alberta events, and they contacted me to ask if I'd be interested in caddying for a pro for the week. I was thrilled, and a little nervous. But it was an amazing experience.
I was with her from Monday to Sunday, two practice rounds, a day of practice, and then four tournament rounds. She made a couple cuts this season so I'm not sure what I was expecting, but making the cut was the goal so we said that we wanted to be under par both days. That was the mantra. Red numbers. We figured that would make the cut.
I took detailed notes on her club usage, talked strategy off the tee and on approach shots, paced off yardages, but left putt reading mostly to her. Just a reminder here and there of when a putt was insanely fast and would likely run away, which a lot of them were. The greens were very fast and tough to read.
She shot 71 on Thursday and was pretty happy with her round, and then Friday she went on a little run halfway through the round and made an eagle and a few birdies. Before we knew it she was -7, and we were heading to the weekend. Shot 66 on Friday, and was thrilled, and T-9 on the leaderboard.
Imagine my surprise when I checked tee times that night and saw that we were off Saturday morning at 10:28 with Lydia Ko. I almost shit myself. I think I was more nervous than she was, but I tried to treat it like it was no big deal for her sake. Later in the day I asked her if she was nervous and she said just on the first tee, and that it was her first time meeting Lydia and golfing with someone with that kind of attention and following.
The round with Lydia was awesome. Nervous tension the entire time, she is so intense and serious. Very thorough and takes every single shot seriously, never missing any kind of angle and talking through everything with her caddy. The galleries following us were insane, unlike anything I've seen, but once the round gets going I really don't notice. I just focused on the golf. My player grinded out a couple long par putts on 1 and 2, and then chipped in out of the bunker on 3 for birdie to break the tension a little bit. Played really well from there and shot 69, finishing the day at -10, tied with Lydia, 7 shots back. Lydia seemed disappointing since she didn't make up ground on the leader who finished at -17. But my girl was really happy.
Sunday was tough. Very cold early in the morning and our group was put on the clock after our tee shots on the 4th hole because we encountered some difficulty on the first few. So we were basically running until the 14th when we were told we were back on time. None of the 5-10 foot birdie putts that were falling earlier in the week were going in. So it wasn't necessarily grinding pars all day. They were all pretty easy pars, but just no birdies to offset the few bogeys she made. She ended up shooting 76 and fell down the leaderboard. Had to be -2 or -3 to keep pace with the field.
All in all it was an amazing experience. We played with some awesome golfers on the weekend (Lydia Ko, Minjee Lee, Chella Choi, Gaby Lopez) and was in contention to win some big bucks. It just didn't come together on Sunday like we would've liked.

I've always wondered if golfers at that level (google says five times in the money for ~$30K) start thinking about money late in Saturday's round. Like "this putt could make/cost me $5K" and stuff like that. I would, but I'm also not on the LPGA and for good reason!
(Also, what happened if he had to go to the bathroom? Its fine for her to stop, but he's just an accessory.)

Caddies are people, too!
(Usually caddies will go after players have hit shots, then run to catch up)

She's a 19-year-old golfer who's won 14 LPGA titles already. She's kind of a big deal in women's golf (i.e., could go down as the greatest women's golfer of all time if she maintains that kind of winning pace).

Caddies usually get a flat fee for the week whether a player makes cut or not. After that they usually get a percentage based on how well the player does. Goes up the better a player does.

I've got a bad case of elbow tendonitis, and that's forced me to put away the sticks early. Considering it's in the upper 70s and sunny today, that sucks balls.
On the bright side, I'm almost certainly going to participate in a nine-hole golf simulator league this winter. Being able to swing the clubs once a week will only help in the long run.

One of the better things about Texas: we can play year round.
I do NOT recommend playing on the hottest day in Houston recorded history though. Not fun.

68 degrees here today - HAD to golf.
Matched up with a couple of unpleasant 4 handicappers and a nice older guy... who loved deer hunting and told me a hell of a lot more than I ever wanted to know about hunting deer and "dressing" them.

I came this close to a hole-in-one yesterday.
The hole is No. 14 at
Hawthorne Valley Golf Club in Solon, Ohio. It was playing about 140 yards, but the green is elevated, sloped back to front and about 8 yards deep. I hit an 8-iron that landed about 10 feet past the hole and to the left, but it had back spin (thanks, Pro V1!) and came down the slope to just behind the hole.

Of course, holes 14-17 were still being prepped for the season and were not in play.
But a 20 footer for birdie on the 3rd hole marked the official end of winter.

I picked up my Baltimore County Golf 'Advantage Card' today (greens/carts fee discounts yada yada).
Got in a few dozen swings at the range before the skies opened up on me over at Rocky Point.
Looking to get in 36 holes between website jobs this week, but apparently mother nature might not tolerate that. We'll see.

My wife bought me a Ping G400 5w for my birthday. I had sworn off buying anymore expensive clubs until I found a swing. Figured I had a 5h and a 7i to get to the bottom of it (and if I'm to spend any $, it should be on lessons).
It's a 'Stiff', too.
Hmm...I'll take this out to the range later this week and have at it.

My wife’s sister moved in across the street, which I’m fine with because her husband and I are really close. He golfs a lot, so I’ve been getting back into it. Have only played a handful of times the last ten years, but used to be good.
I’ve had a lot of fun lately. Played three times in Pensacola on vacation last week, and scored progressively better each round. Hitting my irons really well, which I really like. My putting is ok, and my chipping could use a LOT of work. I’m long off the tee, but spray it all over right now. Over the last several years I’ve had problems with a fade, so am working on getting my hands through the ball to turn it over. But that just means that with four tee shots I’ll have one left, one right, one down the middle, one waaay right. Spent most of the vacation scrambling. If I avoid the big score holes, my round scores will start dropping, so that’s what I’m focusing on, plus just thinking tempo.
All of that said, I’m also a hell of a lot calmer on the course now. It’s actually fun again.

Our driving skills sound eerily similar.
I golf with guys who are as average to below average as I am (usually all in the high 80's-mid 90's) I find that when I golf with my friends who are actually good, my tension level rises. Still fun, but not as much fun.

I still remember being pissed at you when we played golf because you said you hadn't played in years but still hit the ball very well. That was a fun day despite all of the rain.

An easy way to overcome this is to remember you're not playing against your partners. You're playing against the course. Forget what they're doing/shooting and just concentrate on each shot you make.

I never had an urge to even visit Florida again - let alone face the inevitability of retiring there - until I saw how cheap a round at your Rocky point club is.
I pay $70 a round at a municipal course near my house. Now granted, it is a really good course, but even the flat track out by the airport is $55.

The 4th hole, hitting from the whites (the long par 5 you're likely referring to is the 5th hole). Pin placement was middle, and the entire green slopes upward.
My parents live in Palm Beach Gardens, and my brother lives over in Tampa. There are so many freakin golf courses down there (private, public) that it makes your head spin. Me? I have an advantage card that gets me a $7 discount on 18 holes at any of 5 courses, which means I get to take a cart out for 18 M-F for $35, or $45 on the weekends.
