Sucks that it's on a Monday night, and St. Augustine is a 3 hour drive away, but whatevs, it's summertime.
You ever been?

Saw Wilco at that venue back in May, 2015. Fantastic show. Great (small) amphitheater, though it was only 2/3 full.
No, I've never seen a show there. It's always been just a little too far away, or on a bad night. It's still both of those things, but you know, it's The National, so...

Which leads to, have you seen a show at whatever they're calling the amphitheater at the Florida State Fairgrounds now? I hate the security there so much, but I've seen some amazing shows there.
No I haven't. Haven't been down to Tampa in a few years now. My brother's seen a bunch of shows there, however.

mister d wrote: Fri Mar 08, 2019 10:52 am Could definitely do w/out the guest vocals. The opening line also reminds me of some other song, not sure its one of theirs, but I can't place it.

ETA: Just listened to the start a few more times and I think its either Vampire Weekend or Animal Collective or something.

EATA: I think its "Giving Up the Gun".
I get the VW and AC thoughts, and (SURPRISE! I'm a big fan), and like the guest vocals a lot.

On a different note, something about the intonation of his voice on Light Years doesn't sound right to me.

Maybe it's a PM that I sent to you last year, and not a public post, because I can't find it in this thread, but Brian sets up his phone at his kit during shows and basically livestreams it all.

Disagree.

I'd go YHYSWY, LY, HT, in that order, and as soon as they officially release Rylan, it'll be first.

In order I listened to them:

YHYSWY: In a lot of songs, including this one, I would be able to instantly tell its them by the drums and my best way of explaining it is it sounds like he's drumming backwards which makes no sense but I love it. Really, really don't like the guest vocals and imagine that piece will sound better live if Matt runs through it himself.

Light Years: Sounds more like a standard mid-late album track than a second release. Nothing wrong with it, neutral "filler" is a positive relative to most albums by most bands, but nothing great and maybe they're going a bit too far with some of the background noise (conversation in this instance)?

Hairpin Turns: I imagine non-fans would say this sounds pretty much like the last song and I'd say "hey, fuck off". Really liking this one, 3 listens in, and I think it has the potential to be an incredible live song.

Rylan: Love it. Somewhere there are superfan parents who named a kid Rylan and are now nervous the album release will turn their semi-secret reasoning into "oh, you named him after".

Official Rankings as of 05-01-19:
1. Rylan
2. Hairpin Turns
3. YHYSWY
4. Light Years

Big gap, small gap, big gap.

YHYSWY was someone who used to work with Bowie, I forget her name. I assumed the others were Lisa Hannigan again.

Though related to Mills’ film, the pervasiveness of those duets, or of another singer taking lead from Berninger, almost becomes a bit much if you listen to I Am Easy To Find through that lens of being the National’s new album. Particularly on tracks like “Rylan,” the ones fans have already familiarized themselves with over the years, the effect can actually be distracting, not enriching. That, too, is a minor issue rooted in how we frame this music going in. While Berninger taking a backseat can initially feel like a gimmick on certain tracks, mostly the variety is part of a big, vibrant tapestry that makes up I Am Easy To Find, a tapestry created from so many different players and ideas, a bright and welcoming answer to the darkened shades and bleakness of Sleep Well Beast.

One of the things the National’s critics hold against them is a perceived fussiness, the notion that everything is always so tightly wound and dramatic and pristine.

Feels a little too personally on the nose.
