That's the show we ended up not going to, so that's fun. I was pretty excited when I saw "Where Is Her Head" was with Julien Baker but it was really her plus two others which killed it.

Saw The National last night.

Well....5 songs worth. It rained hard for an hour before they came on, and we were pretty cold and soaked by that point. Kind of a disappointment.

The 9 song (.5 each for "Her Father in the Pool" and "Underwater") run from "I Am Easy to Find" to the end of the album is so fucking great.

1. I imagine this is what Chedz hears when he listens to IAETF.
2. Is there something just kinda odd about it? Berninger is every bit of 48, Bridgers is 25 and has the history with Ryan Adams. Obviously no right answer here, because avoiding younger singers is far shittier than making me think its odd so ... no idea.
3. If I dislike something, and of course I do, its having Berninger singing over a drummer that isn't Bryan. They're supposed to be in perpetual tandem, even more than the twins.

IIRC, Carin was heavily involved with this track.

There is definitely something odd about the age difference. However, PB singing with an older guy has been done before with Conor and BOCC, so I suppose it isn't completely shocking. That being said, especially given the accusations that RA, at a minimum, was creepy AF with her specifically. (I don't remember the specifics, and don't have time to research them at the moment).

I think the problem with a blanket ban on young women singing with older men is that it removes any agency from the woman.

It's definitely weird to hear Matt without Bryan (El Vy suffered in a similar manner, in my opinion).

This is not what I hear when I listen to IAETF.

Right, the solution is anything but "this shouldn't be done". This feels very much like one of those issues where I should have no opinion whatsoever.

Because she can actually stand next to Matt versus sounding like background vocals forced into the forefront?

(The only one I hear nature right now is "Where is Her Head". That really works, although I think I like it better live than on the album. "Rylan" is still an abomination.)

I've said this is probably my favorite on the new album but its also much better with less voices ...

No Bryan on camera?

Also, I'm pretty sure that's the same location as a fantastic live show that I think they streamed live, and is on Youtube now? I wanted to say it was a NYE show, but I think it may have been summer as I am pretty sure I watched it at the beach.

Someday you’re going to lose an avatar bet and I’m going to rotate that belt buckle 90 degrees and put a dash after “NO”.

Eh ... C+? I feel like there are obviously going to be some bands I'd want to see at a festival curated by The National but this one doesn't knock me out (and Of Monsters & Men can fuck off).

I really want to see Sylvan Esso. Leithauser would be great, but I've seen him 2x.

VIP prices are fucking nuts too. $475, and you get a small amount of merch, a better viewing area, and a private lounge under Smale bridge, between the two stages, and NO FREE BOOZE.

Platinum tickets get more (free booze and food, better lounge, etc.) but they're $950/person?!?!!?

Jay Som and Japanese Breakfast would be my 2 and 3. And I was into Local Natives back in the day, they might be cool to see.

The National's cover of "Never Tear Us Apart": Kinda bad? Like it doesn't sound awful, but only a fan of the National is going to care about it. Too similar to the original.

Berninger's cover of Mercury Rev's "Holes": Really, really great.

Don't ask me what you know is true.

(and it was a horn section instead of a sax solo, and I love the original version of that song, but I liked the cover - I hope it saves some koalas)

Yeah, I feel like they could have done something more Fake Empire-y or something? This was just "The National cover INXS" as if they had 20 minutes to prep; you either do it as good or better or you completely alter it to your own sound.

I just kind of assumed The National would be of those bands I never had a “favorite song” from (which is a pretty good complement for a band I think, but now I think I’m pretty sure it’s “Mistaken For Strangers”.

I haven't done this exercise ... probably should give the circumstances ... but that's a very not bad pick for favorite of theirs. Its not my #1 "this is a song by The National that encompasses The National", but top 10 for sure.

(Cheds (or others) ... go. What's your answer for the one song you'd play if you only had one to rope someone in to their style.)

((Hint for Cheds (or others trying to guess my #1) ... I think "Mistaken" goes a bit 'harder' than they go on average so that's why its not #1.))

This is definitely recency bias, since Runaway came on this morning while I was running and I spent the next 5 minutes or so trying to decide why I included it on a dedicated running playlist and the horns and drums are so pretty and cool that I decided maybe it was because I just really like the song.

Or I’ll be obvious and lame and say About Today

Also, I hopped on work super early yesterday and decided I really wanted to take a walk at like 6:45am so I didn’t spend like 11 hours online and then decided I really needed a podcast to listen to and my favorite Penguins ones are struggling so I ended up grabbing the first episode of Coffee and Flowers and maybe it was the cool British voices or maybe it was the cool NJ rain or maybe it was the commiseration over mishearing “let’s not try to figure out everything *it wants*” but I’ll definitely listen to the second episode at some point.
