Charles Pierce's columns from the O'Bannon trial on grantland well worth a read.

I could read his writing on just about anything. I think I'm personally responsible for having GQ blocked at my workplace since I used to visit his politics blog on there multiple times a day.

I really love minor league baseball promotions...

Minor League Baseball Team Plans Awesome “Mark Emmert Appreciation Day”
an array of awesome in-game promotions to negatively celebrate Emmert’s (accurate) comments, including the following:

All fans may transfer to a different seat but will be subject to a one inning waiting period penalty
Fans that participate during in-game festivities, contests or promotions will not receive tangible prizes but instead receive the satisfaction of having participated
The Captain mascot may or may not roam the stadium dishing out $100 handshakes to any fan wearing a generic college jersey, one that may or may not represent a current student-athlete

Minnesota's now-former AD is apparently a massive scumbag. Can't wait for this to be adapted into a dark comedy starring Jeffrey Tambor.

I'm sure they're just trying to figure out an equitable distribution of the remaining $375 million to the athletes.

I guess this was the better thread. NCAA getting shredded by the whole Supreme court right now.

And it's the conservative judges going after them. Is it because the NCAA is so obviously wrong or is there a political/idealogical beef they have against the NCAA. Normally, they seem to be for worker exploitation.

But not with antitrust stuff.

I'm pretty sure we all know how this is going to shake out. Either the NCAA gets fully on board or the big conferences (with probably some of the top mid majors) do their own thing.

Barrett asked Waxman if it was really his argument that “consumers enjoy watching unpaid people play sports.”

“Yes, that is our line,” Waxman said.

I wonder if it’s related to conservatives’ general animosity against colleges and universities that aren’t Liberty or ORU.

Between the Supreme COurt and stupid fucking comments like this, Mark Emmert should be out of a job soon.

This is the equivalent of "can't please a woman, just make up your minds!" Well, Mark, what they want is to be treated the same. It ain't rocket science.

Gotta get me one of those seven- (or eight-, right, Mr. Goodell?) figure jobs where you just eat PR bullets for a bunch rich people who want the money spigot left open full blast.

That's basically the definition of most head corporate office Investor Relations and Public Relations jobs. Except for the pay rate, of course!

Kavanaugh tore the NCAA a new one:
“But the labels cannot disguise the reality: The NCAA’s business model would be flatly illegal in almost any other industry in America. All of the restaurants in a region cannot come together to cut cooks’ wages on the theory that ‘customers prefer’ to eat food from low-paid cooks...

“Nowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers a fair market rate on the theory that their product is defined by not paying their workers a fair market rate."

Apparently the CFP Board of Managers decided on a 12-team college football playoff. No dissentions. Expected to debut in 4 years.

I heard the top 6 ranked conference winners and then the next 6 highest ranked.

Basically all this means is more SEC and Big Ten teams.

Yep. But they'll change the rules on conference winners getting an automatic bid. Bank it.

No. 12 maybe better than 8 but 4 the right number. We're talking 3 loss teams. I guess both sec teams will show up to the dome to play for a bye but loses some juice.

assuming this is the bat signal...

1. have to think the three years of procrastination had to stop after the Big Ten's sneak attack this summer and the other P5 conferences realized they needed to make the pie bigger and keep a seat at the table to eat that pie

2. home games for teams Nos. 5-8 is cool but not a fan of three neutral site games for top four seeds/first-round winners (assuming they make it to title game). that's asking way too much from fans and turning watching sports in person into even more of a rich person's game

3. will be interesting to see if they rotate more bowl games into the quarterfinals and semifinals or just turn the current New Year's Six into the playoff bowl games

4. the rest of the bowls won't likely change

5. season could ultimately move up when this is implemented? current rules say games will start second or third weekend of December and no sooner than 12 days after conference title games

6. if this is implemented before 2026 I can see ESPN renegotiating its current deal to keep the entirety of the playoff and then the CFP soliciting bids from ESPN/Fox/CBS/NBC for 2026 to potentially split it up and get more money

7. back to No. 1, I can see the argument that this expansion could end realignment for the foreseeable future but I'm at the point where I will never discount it anymore
