The Cop looks like he just left the starting blocks in the 100 metre dash.

And it's a taser - Canadian cops do carry guns, but no doubt, one of the several committees that had to approve the design said that a gun would offend some people. (The Canadian default)

Kind of amusing headline, but this guy got away with this for 6 or 7 years and was once even suspended for doing so.

I really like Minhaj, but he is way oversimplifying and just wrong on this one. Qualified immunity protects government employees from being sued PERSONALLY for reasonable acts within their discretion. It doesn't protect employees when they are knowingly acting in violation of law or with gross negligence, or acting outside the scope of their authority. When they are protected by qualified immunity, you CAN sue the town/state/federal government, depending on who employs them.

My father was a Regional Supervisor of Parole, and he was sued dozens of times, mostly for things like prohibiting released pedophiles from moving in with their girlfriend's young children. If he had to defend that those suits out of pocket, he'd go bankrupt. If he had to risk losing everything out of fear of lawsuits, he couldn't do his job and make the right decisions. In extreme cases, it may sound shocking or horrible, but without qualified immunity, government couldn't function. Hey, I put in for a permit to build an addition, and the Town said I need a variance. If I could sue the town clerk personally claiming he discriminated because I'm Jewish, the guy's life would be ruined for making a legitimate determination in his job.

All our covid spikes have literally been traced to the neighborhood where that party was. Also local media was reporting attendees north of 1k, and they were flipping cars and throwing bricks and stuff. I have no problem with them getting the swat treatment.

Police are literally among the worst drivers in the world. Zero adherence to laws because why would they need to, including when off the clock? After becoming a police officer, my former friend never used his turn signal.

Last night, arriving at my basketball game while it's raining with pretty dark clouds. It's not quite 7pm and not dark enough to necessitate them, but I have my headlights on. The place we play is behind the police station for that town, but also accessible by entering through the town office's parking lot and using a one-way paved connecting path. As I'm approaching the path, I happen to realize an all-black cruiser with no lights on is coming the wrong way down the one-way toward me at a speed I feel very comfortable describing as "beyond whatever the speed limit is for a parking lot". Fortunately, I saw him early enough to swerve out of the way, but I'm certain I would have been "in the wrong" had something happened.
