I'm officially back in Korea. It's 7 pm on Monday. Being 16 hours ahead from where I was is weird.

Negative on my follow up COVID nasal swab and I've been released after 14 days in my room. I got to throw away my trash finally. It was accumulating and I named it Fred.

That's why I had a week and a half to pack for deployment and was back 3 weeks when I got told to come here by November.

I should've played my racism card when I had the chance!

All kidding aside, this does not shock me in the least. The other day I went to base headquarters for a meeting. Like every headquarters I've been to, it's really nice and decked out inside. Heritage and history everywhere.

On the wall were photos of all the former base commanders. Every single one was white, except one: our current Chief of Staff of the Air Force, General CQ Brown. (In the photo he's a colonel and wearing the 'old school' BDU.) And I've posted his video response to the George Floyd murder a couple times. Spoiler alert: he was discriminated against from his earliest moments in service. Back in October only the 2nd ever African-American Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force retired and now our first ever female (and Asian-American at that) is in the seat. I'm glad The Air Force is finally catching up to the times.

And sure, from raw numbers, less minorities are present. But those who join definitely get put into a box. It isn't specifically for racist reasons, but you can just kinda tell, more often then not white people co-mingle more with white people and so on. Within the chain of command, I can definitely see negative cognitive bias when more white people are in positions of power all across the service and a non white were to get in trouble.

It sucks. And I suspect this is prevalent throughout the military.

Hey Johnnie--what are "lickees and chewies?" Heard this in a local news story and wanted to see if the explanation checks out.

I've never heard that term before. It's possible, but I can't confirm it.

I read the article in reference to it now though. Looks like he's doing well. Good shit.

I'll have to read that story. The concept for the F-35 was to have it be multidimensional. Have one airframe across all the services, but each could be different.

The Marine variant doing vertical takeoff. The Navy one could land on an aircraft carrier. The Air Force one could replace the current fighter generation altogether, etc. I think the issue is in the fact that having one airframe with that many functions is just too much for one contractor to create.

But I have to read the article to see what it says specifically.

The gist is that the F-35 was supposed to be the USAF's low-cost reliable replacement across the board for the F-16. But it got too complex and heavy and expensive and difficult to maintain, so it's basically a "Ferrari" instead of the everyday plane it was supposed to be.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Ah. So, for the Air Force, it sucks. That makes sense. Seems like standard cost overruns and the acquisitions process add bloat. Then I'm sure constant regime change and the ever changing landscape of adversarial warfare (now it's near-peer stuff) dictates adding and subtracting from the original contract and this goes on and on.

Just read the article. I'm happy that I've been paying attention because aspects of my previous posts were actually in the article.

What I didn't realize was that it's the man himself, Gen CQ Brown, that is calling the ugly baby ugly. He's an F-16 guy, so he knows his shit when it comes to fighter aircraft. His words carry weight.

Fun fact: His picture is on the wall at the headquarters building here at Kunsan because he used to be the base commander when he was a colonel. He's also the only 'Wolf' (positional call sign for the wing commander, Kunsan is the 'Wolfpack') who is African-American.

Funner fact: We have the same tailor at Osan. His business card is on the wall when he was a captain aide-de-camp way back when.

Not a bad message.

https://www.dover.af.mil/News/Commentar ... eople-too/

Sometimes people on base are just asked to write an article to talk about things going on and maybe add some experience to it. It can't be critical of the AF, obviously.

Reminds me of a time way back when, I clipped an article out of the base paper at Barksdale with the headline "As inspection season begins, just remember, you volunteered for this."

It was written by a stuffy Lt Colonel who just couldn't help but perpetuate being an asshole when things were already annoying. A real "the beatings will continue until morale improves" kind of thing. I had it at my desk for a long, long time to remind me of who not to be like when I was in long enough to lead people.

Oh man. That's bad. It's down there with veterans who put "Veteran of OIR/OEF" all huge across the back windshield.

At the very least, a relative taking pride can be argued as support even when you know it's a "Hey, a relative of mine serves!" With vets, there's no excuse.

I have reached the summit.

I officially applied for retirement Friday morning. The effective date will be 1 October of next year, but with the amount of leave I have saved (thanks to COVID), I'll be free-ish beginning in June.

Since I've been talking about this since I arrived here, my co-workers decorated my desk and bought me cupcakes.

And yes, I had to fight back tears. I really didn't expect that.

Ha! That clock is for multiple time zones. We routinely work with Zulu time (Greenwich Mean) and we need to know what time it is in other countries.
