U.S. Navy expected to name ship after slain Supervisor Harvey Milk

Harvey served in the USN during the Korean War. He served on a submarine rescue ship. He was a diving officer. Yes, he went down for seamen. One day I will become mature. This is actually pretty cool.

I don't really know the history or unofficial rules of naming ships, but it isn't a little unusual to pick a guy like Milk for that honor? I get his significance to the LGBT community, but does the Navy really go for that kind of political statement in naming ships? I thought it was typically presidents, generals and war heroes.

The first of this particular type of ship, an oil and fuel tanker, they named for John Lewis. Earlier this month, the Secretary of the Navy announced their plan to name the other Lewis-class underway replenishment oilers after civil rights leaders. Earl Warren, Robert Kennedy, Sojourner Truth and Lucy Stone as well as Milk.

Navy to Name Ship After Gay Rights Activist Harvey Milk

I did not know any of this until today.

Doubt President Trump will allow this mess, though.

And there's the fact that Milk was a decorated Naval officer honorably discharged who was assassinated while wearing his Naval Master Diver belt.

If you know anything about military history the armed forces (very much to their credit) take care of their own.

I think there are a lot of ships named after less illustrious people. I'd have to get to a computer to say for sure but it isn't just the big guys.

Which isn't to say he isn't deserving. I didn't mean that to come out hat way. He deserves it and is plenty illustrious. Just that there are a shitload of ships in the fleet and not enough admirals to go around.

When I arrived at Ohio University for freshman year, I was astounded at how all the students from Cleveland sounded like New Yorkers. They all refused to admit they had an accent and in turn, told me I must be from Kentucky.

Thus, I found this article pretty interesting.

The Origins and Evolution of the Cleveland Accent
I see that for sure. When I used to go to Ann Arbor regularly for business, I definitely heard the accent described below. Describes Chicago well, too.
... "The initiating event appears to be the shift of short-a in bat to ... sound very much like the vowel of yeah. It is not just this one word, bat ... but all words spelled with short-a: cad, bad, that, cat, attitude, cap, happen, happening, etc."

What this means is that speakers in Cleveland, and elsewhere in the NCS region, are almost adding an extra syllable when we say those words and others like them. To use Labov's example, if you insert the word "yeah" into the middle of the word "cat," you come up with something that sounds like "c-yeah-t" (or kee-yat)...

Olbermann does Vin. Really solid piece. Favorite part:

"Legendary is the story of the blustery political commentator who years ago had ‘his people’ advise the Dodgers he wanted to meet Scully because Scully was “number one” in his field. “Everywhere I go, Mr. Scully, I try to meet whoever is Number One because I’m Number One in what I do and it’s important to recognize and salute those of my own stature, and you’re Number One here!” The man bellowed on like this for several moments as the crew in the Dodger booth squirmed. When he finally paused, too impressed with himself to sense Scully’s anger, Scully quietly, politely, and efficiently cut the blowhard into little pieces. “Well then, you’ll want to meet Arthur here, who is our Number One stage manager.” The commentator found himself unwillingly shaking hands. “And of course, you’ll want to meet Debbie, she’s our Number One makeup artist.” Another unhappy handshake. “And Don, our Number One cameraman—who, coincidentally is on Camera Number One.” Again with the handshake. “And in the row behind you, that’s Antonio, our Number One intern…” Witnesses disagree as to how many Numbers One Scully introduced before the man angrily muttered “I gotta go”—but all agreed he was several feet shorter when he went. "

Emotional Support Duck Takes to the Skies on 1st Commercial Flight
An emotional support duck named Daniel was allowed on a flight from Charlotte to Asheville, North Carolina. The bird was wearing a Captain America diaper and little red booties during the trip. Daniel spent most of his first commercial flight quacking quietly and looking out the window.
