I can only view what is happening to Deadspin as a hit. Clearly meant to finish stifling all dissenting voices. Part of a pattern - Splinter, MTV News, etc etc over the last several years. Mainstream publications they already came for and gutted, now wiping away the few places for dissenting voices in the new media. Appears to be a general plan, really.

That's it for deadspin for me. Those men and women were awesome for a long time.

No, they sent an email to staff saying they can only write about sports now.

The ads thing blew up in their face enough that they shut down an e-mail address fro complaints.

Yeah, that's the thing, there's CLEARLY a HUGE market for this. Somebody will try to grab the bulk of these editors and writers and try to recreate the overall vibe. There's millions of dollars in ad revenue being left on the floor if they implode.

Yeah, that's the thing, there's CLEARLY a HUGE market for this. Somebody will try to grab the bulk of these editors and writers and try to recreate the overall vibe. There's millions of dollars in ad revenue being left on the floor if they implode.

I just don't understand why it hasn't already been done. Magary alone is worth it. Maybe he's got extenuating contractual obligations with GQ or whatever but I don't understand how you can work and see your friends and colleagues picked off every 3 weeks and stick around and say "this is ok".

Right. It's not mismanagement. It's about suffocating voices that speak to a particular (open) mindset.

Deadspin Editor Fired Amid Pushback Over ‘Stick to Sports’ Memo

A popular sports website was told to stick to sports — and staff members revolted.

Deadspin, a sister site to Gizmodo and Jezebel, is the latest blog run by G/O Media involved in an escalating conflict with its new owner, Great Hill Partners, a private equity firm based in Boston.

When a memo circulated to Deadspin staff on Monday about the site’s editorial direction was met with derision, management shot back. The site’s interim editor in chief, Barry Petchesky, who had worked there for 10 years, tweeted Tuesday that he had been fired for “not sticking to sports.”
