Yeah, that was shitty. I do genuinely like some of their umbrella sites but feel guilty patronizing them when their flagship is so reprehensible.

I saw some people on twitter complaining about a Gawker article, but couldn't figure out which one. I had skipped over that particular article when browsing this morning.

That was ugly and unnecessary, at best...

The dude who wrote it is garbage, but still ... how did that get through editing (and get crossed to Deadspin)? Is it an anti-Conde thing or just the GAY PORN GUY CLICK BAIT stuff?

For a site that seems to pride itself on taking up liberal issues, this should lead to some massive fallout?

Summary from another site:
Essentially, Gawker outed the CFO of a rival media company, who is married with three children, after he allegedly solicited a male escort. The reason that the escort ratted out the executive to Gawker was because the exec refused to use his political connections to help the escort out with a housing dispute.

So to sum up: An escort tried to use an executive’s political connections to get a favor. The executive declined to help them, which was a good thing. In an act of revenge, the escort went to Gawker with the dirt and the publication was all too happy to oblige.

Gawker pulled the story.
The point of this story was not in my view sufficient to offset the embarrassment to the subject and his family. Accordingly, I have had the post taken down. It is the first time we have removed a significant news story for any reason other than factual error or legal settlement.

Eh, they wouldn't have any kind of legal argument. It's most definitely not libel. Can't imagine what else he could try to sue for.

Isn't there a very different (lower) threshold for libel when its a private citizen rather than a public figure?

For all the petty, mean-spirited shit they do sometimes, Deadspin's capacity to occasionally turn out something great and valuable is what keeps me coming back (OK, that, and Magary making fun of fanbases I don't like).

You might have been following their gradual deconstruction of former NBA star/current Sacramento mayor/longtime sociopath Kevin Johnson; here's the coup de grace:

Kevin Johnson is a true piece of garbage, aside from very likely a serial child molester. His wife a piece of crap too. Sacramento voters deserve him. I've been amazed he has lasted this long, but he won't last forever. The deadspin pieces detail his past, but could've used a good editor.

I read that earlier today. He does sound like a serial molester of young girls. Crazy stuff. I had ignored their previous KJ pieces, because I just wasn't that interested. From that one, and assuming there's some truth to it and the other stuff they've written, he's a real asshole. It's funny how different athletes often turn out to be than what you think about them from their play. I always liked KJ. I loved the way he played and the way he composed himself. He played very hard, but always seemed to be smiling and composed.

Sometimes it's the smilers you have to watch out for.

Shirley, I'm with you on each point, from Johnson's NBA career to now. I just assumed that he was a smarter-than-average NBA player who was perhaps over his head as mayor of a major city. Guess I was wrong. I also once thought that Isiah Thomas was a class act. I'll stick to evaluating the character of power forwards from now on.

The most puzzling thing about this to me is how Johnson's political opponents and the local press did not uncover enough of the material in this article to end Johnson's new career. There aren't many major cities where someone who is not a long-established politician in a massively corrupt community can just breeze through multiple stories of sexual misconduct with minors.

With all due respect to Governor Edwards, I mean, of course, outside of Louisiana.

I always liked KJ as a player. And I was just gonna mention Isiaiah as another smiling face (but he was never accused of pedophilia).

Sactown is not a major city. And the local politics had been very clean, very little corruption until recent years. I suppose the Capitol building attracted all the crooks, leaving local politics alone. Probably because there wasn't a lot of cash sloshing around the town, small local economy and that was agriculture-based.

With the service economy and real estate booms in the 90s, and the shift in school financing from local to state control (post Proposition 13 in the mid-70s) only then did city politics start to get dirty. So I've been told.

No NBA player has ever had a better smile than Isiah. I'd be terrified if he had anything to do with any organization I cared about.

I realize that from a Davis point of view, Sacramento is not a major city. After all, UCD >>>>> SacState. But it's got 500K + residents, a state capital, and even a major sports team. Er, a team in a major sports league. Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger both lived there. William Vollman lives there now. So that's pretty major. I mean, it's not even that far from greater Vacaville.

I think the ball is entirely in Jerry Jones's court. Remember, the NFL tried to suspend Hardy for the first 10 games of this season, but a neutral arbitrator (i.e., not Goodell) reduced it to 4. For what it's worth, the arbitrator's rationale for reducing Hardy's suspension is the same as one of Judge Berman's reasons for overturning Brady's suspension -- a lack of notice and precedent that a player could get suspended that long for the actions in question. This is why the NFL's appeal of the Brady ruling is really important for reasons that have nothing to do with Brady. An appellate court ruling that says that Goodell has broad discretion in suspending players might also allow the league to take a stronger stand against players like Hardy.
