Actually got that one right, but almost bailed on my answer. After I said it in my head, one of the names started sounding like I'd just made it up. Luckily, I stuck with it.

Next largest and closest to city centers. I went with Ukraine because I figured Kiev would be the city it launched from.

Deduction is my best friend on things that happened way before my lifetime.

two other things since we're spoiling:

1) According to The Right Stuff, the launches occurred in a place called "Star City, Russia". Did that exist, and if not, what was the motivation for making that up?

2) I really wish the answer had been Russia given the moment and how the question was phrased, would have been the best Michael Jordan moment ever.
