NHL Offseason Thread

Post by timgod99X »

Apologies if one has already been started. I looked for one, but couldn't find one.

Just saw this one twitter
@AnsarKhanMLive Datsyuk said he wants to sign extension w Wings this summer. Looking forward to staying in Detroit beyond next season
Good news for the Wings and the NHL as a whole.

As for the Flyers, I was looking over their roster this morning and even after a Briere buyout, which seems all but certain, I still think they have too many and not enough forwards. I think they need a top line wing to play with Giroux-Vorceck, but with Laughton more than likely making the club this fall, they have too many centers at the bottom of the roster and no place to play them. That leads me to think that Homer will trade either Brayden Schenn or Sean Couturier for help rebuilding the blue line.

Plus, with the Briere buyout, but without a Bryzgalov buyout (which I still don't know which way they'll go), they have about $8 million to spend. Not much for a top line wing AND a big time defensman upgrade. Personally, I think they should amnesty Bryz and then see what St. Louis wants for Halak at the draft. If it's a mid-round pick, like I think it should if we take his full salary, do it and run with a Halak-Mason tandem.

For some context for casual NHL fans, Datsyuk was supposedly very seriously considering moving to the KHL after his contract expired. Fortunately the Wings have quite a bit of cap space this offseason. If they re-up Datsyuk, not likely they'll be a major player in free agency, though I could see them trying to add some depth in defense.

Gonchar gets 2yrs/10M from Stars

Does Jerry Jones own the Stars too? That's beyond ridiculous.

Flyers acquired (D) Mark Streit from NYIslanders in exchange for a 4th rd pick in the 2014 NHL Draft

Interesting, Flyers get negotiating rights until July 1 for a very good defenseman. But they have to negate 2million in cap money. Who goes?

He's 35, and he supposedly wants a 4-year deal at $4 million per year. I'd pass.

Saw a couple tweets that Calgary offered all their draft picks this year to Colorado, for the Avs' first overall pick. Colorado turned them down.

Not all their draft picks, just the 3 first rounders.

Not surprising, 3 first rounds isn't enough, they'll have to add a prospect or next years first.

The Avs would be better off with Miller/Grigo/#8 than the Calgary first rounders.

Datsyuk's three-year extension is official. Haven't seen any financial terms released yet, so that leaves four years on his deal and that's probably it after that.

Tweet from Ted Kulfan (through timgod99):

Datsyuk's agent Gary Greenstin says 3 year deal worth $23 million: $10 million first year: 7.5 2nd year; 5.5 3rd year. Cap hit is 7.5 mil

The Leafs have been determined to create a goalie controversy for quite awhile, and now they finally made a deal, trading for Jonathan Bernier of the Kings. They never could finalize a deal for Luongo. Bernier was supposed to be Los Angeles' goalie of the future, but that was before Jonathan Quick established himself in that role. Now, he can battle James Reimer for that role in Toronto. Funny, for much of last season, goaltending was a surprising strength for the Leafs.

Oh shit Kris Letang.

I hope this is all posturing, but it's hard to ignore the similarities to the JStaal situation last year.

Also, Bylsma will be the Team USA coach in Sochi next year (Ray Shero will be an associate GM).

I like this. Oilers have a defenceman, Flames have a centre. Maybe the Battle of Alberta won't be a turtle race anymore.

While not quite a wasteland, from here on in, after the top five or six picks, this is the weakest draft I've seen in perhaps decades.

I agree.. someone should trade up to take the Russian since he's the last good player left.

Gilles should be fired. He could have had Kadri and Gardner for Luongo last summer, now he trades Schneider for this. Some guy named Bo.

So, is MacKinnon a lock to play in Denver next year, or will he start in the AHL? I might have to watch him play if he starts off at Lake Erie.

He's still Junior eligible. (Most of the Halifax Mooseheads will be back). If MacKinnon doesn't go straight to Colorado, he'll go back to Junior. Or he might play his (allowed) 18 or something NHL games and then go back to Jr.

MacKinnon will never play in the AHL unless, down the road, he's rehabbing an injury or something.

Completely unpredictable now.

I had Domi going to Buffalo at 16th. Oops.

5'11" defenseman with a reputation for being a dirty player. Interesting pick; you'd think he'd be about a 4th or 5th round pick.

About Nino Niederreiter, think about what the Leafs did to fuck with Yanic Perreault; how they destroyed his development by keeping him in the AHL. At least Niederreiter is free of that now.
