I guessed Dominica. Thought the DR flag was just the pattern. Oh well. Also wondering if there is a second answer to the capitals question, will need to dig around.

Definitely not. The clue is too specific.

the lawyer in me thinks there is a second correct answer to this question, but there was not a talismanic event in 1957 in the other capital.

Exactly. The only other things that happened in 1957 are Sputnik (and Sputnik 2 w/Laika the dog) and Lennon and McCartney met for the first time.

Got the island - I've actually read that book.

Didn't get the other two. Wavered between the correct capital and not the correct capital. Couldn't make myself go with the correct one.

howard wrote:They changed the rule on ties. If there is a tie after final, there is a one-question decider, with buzzers. Whoever buzzes in first, answers and wins or loses. This new rule was established just this year, (after 31 years) and it has worked to discourage ties. There has not yet been a tie and tiebreaker.

But even with the traditional setup, tie for first, come back as co-champions, that is the classic prisoner's dilemma. You are correct, the thing to do is both bet zero, but collusion is not allowed. Even if you did discuss it, or just a wink and nod, you have to trust the other person to not wager. Well, not the classic prisoner's dilemma, since you could break the agreement, wager, then get the answer wrong.

Under the new rule, an overt or tacit agreement, adhered to by both players, would have resulted in a tiebreaker question, and then one of them would've won and advanced to the next game. A 50% chance at a win is better than what happened to them tonight.
I was unaware of the rule change, thanks for the info.

In that case I guess you're right and you do have to wager something. and your choices are $1 and all of it so might as well right and win some money.

I'm not sure if I have my game theory totally correct, but the earlier described situation is not a true prisoners dilemma correct? As I understood it back when I studied it, that would only be true if one player stood to gain from pushing his opponent under the bus. In this case it would have been mutually assured destruction under old rules, so why bother? Taking your opponent out doesn't benefit you. You both win money, you both come back and play again, and assuming you both know those conditions, you'd be a fool to not take the sure money, right?

Correct, it is not a true prisoners' dilemma. This situation has some, but not all elements in common with the prisoners' dilemma, as you described. Under the old rules, little to no similarity to the dilemma situation.

Honestly, I find the theory of wagering and managing the game almost as fun as the trivia itself. The game is a lot deeper than knowing stuff in a lot of fields.

So since the dear leaders gave me my spoiler tag I ought to use it.

The better part of the MLK National Historic Site in Atlanta was added to the National Register under Carter, whose library is also in Atlanta. There wasn't really an event there in 1957 equivalent to Little Rock, but it so happens that 1957 was the year in which the SCLC was formed in one of the buildings that is part of the historic site. So especially given the day on which the episode aired, I thought the one guy's answer was maybe technically right.

Answer

Do we need this answer feature now that we have the spoiler function? We do have the table listed in this location, and I engage further discussion, but those can be placed elsewhere. Decisions, decisions.

Monday January 18, 2016
Category: STATE CAPITALS
Clue: A 1957 EVENT LED TO THE CREATION OF A NATL. HISTORIC SITE IN THIS CITY, SIGNED INTO LAW BY A PRESIDENT WHOSE LIBRARY IS NOW THERE TOO

Answer: Where Little Rock, Arkansas?
The event was the desegregation of Central High School, under the protection of the National Guard, ordered in by President Eisenhower.

Rex proposed Atlanta, Ga, with this explanation:
The better part of the MLK National Historic Site in Atlanta was added to the National Register under Carter, whose library is also in Atlanta. There wasn't really an event there in 1957 equivalent to Little Rock, but it so happens that 1957 was the year in which the SCLC was formed in one of the buildings that is part of the historic site. So especially given the day on which the episode aired, I thought the one guy's answer was maybe technically right.
But, one of the contestants answered Atlanta, and was ruled wrong. So we will go with that ruling.

Discussion of this point is ongoing at the JBoard beginning here: http://jboard.tv/viewtopic.php?p=201122#p201122" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

For some reason, I remember nearly all of the New World explorers that we learned in middle school. I never heard of this Charlevoix dude. With the word 'confluence' in the clue, all I could think of is Three Rivers Stadium the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, but I couldn't remember if that was within five miles of the state line w/Ohio, or fifty miles. (It is actually about 20 miles.) So that was my wrong guess. But, there is a lesson here. Confluence = rivers. Most prominent river in the US - Mississippi. Longest river in the US - Missouri. They have a confluence. In what was New France in 1721. Easy peasy, or should've been.
