Marking students' reviews of documentaries - had to look up "extenuates" just to make sure the student was using it incorrectly.

And he most certainly was.

Proving that the only thing worse than a moron, is a pretentious moron.

It then moves onto the construction of the building, the director's choice of using uplifting Chinese folk music throughout the film extenuates the idea of incorporating the culture into the building.

That doesn't sound like the correct use of extenuates to me.

She must mean that. Well, time for the ol' perfesser to explain to the kids that using words when you are unsure of their meaning is a no-no.

I'll do that right after I remind them that when they are reviewing a documentary, they should make sure they write the title properly. Unless of course Netflix has launched Making of A Murder" as well as The Making of The Murderer.

Semantic (see the NBA thread). Just to make sure I was using it correctly.

Also, semantic means "relating to the meaning of words" and I was looking up its meaning. That's pretty meta.

Also "meta." Just to make sure I was using it correctly.

Also I'm drunk.

There is no way using this word didn't come across as pretentious and douchey.

'Nidus' is one of my favorite medical words, but I've never used it in a non-medical context, precisely because I'm not that kind of douche.

(I know, don't sell myself short.)
