The question and answer needed something a bit more visual.

I thought I had a pretty good knowledge of presidential election minutiae, but I had no idea about this one:

Who was the last person who was not a Democrat or Republican to receive an electoral vote in a U.S. presidential election?

Strom Thurmond was Dixiecrat bullshit, George Wallace was American Independent bullshit, which came later. It's neither of them, though.

Teddy Roosevelt?

EDIT: From your description, sounds like some state gave a vote or two to a candidate that didn't win the vote just because they can but I'm drawing a blank. Thinking Vermont for some reason.

Getting warmer, but not the right state.

It's really, really obscure. I might wait for howard to visit this thread, since if anyone remembers (and was possibly friends with) the candidate, it's him.

The answer is John Hospers, who ran on the Libertarian ticket in 1972. Though he was only on the ballot in Colorado and totaled 3,674 popular votes, he received a vote from a faithless elector in Virginia.

e: More trivia: that one electoral vote made Hosper's running mate, Tonie Nathan, both the first woman and first Jewish person to receive an electoral vote.

You got me on that. I vaguely remembered a single faithless elector at some time in my youth, but I had no clue on the year, much less the person.

I don't really expect these to be guessed, so this is less a trivia question and more a cool fact. Almost 20% of the 1996 NCAA Tournament field (12 teams) haven't been back since. How about somebody names one of them for the Swampbucks and then I'll post the rest.

Valparaiso is still my go-to for "obscure team that went on an unlikely NCAA tournament run." Pretty sure that was later than '96, though.

Damn. I would have guessed Bryce Drew's shot was early 00s but it was 1998.

I remember San Jose State that year. Iirc, they were a sub-.500 16-seed, but led top seed Kentucky at halftime. Then proceeded to lose the game by 30 points or something.

Pretty close. Kentucky was leading but not by much. Won the second half by 32.

I was far too late to mention Drexel, who Syracuse beat in one of the first two rounds. I'd have to look at my bracket t-shirt from that year to know for sure.

Yep - beat Memphis then lost to SU after being tied at the half.
