I got Correa, Votto, Franco and Stanton on my fantasy team at auction, and so far have apparently jinxed them all. I am awesome. Votto is going through a stretch where it looks like he has never held a bat in his hand before.

Arrieta has given up 0 hits through 6.

But he's thrown 90 pitches.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Plus a lot of sitting around, while cubbies score 13.

That was as complete a beatdown as I have ever seen in a baseball game. Pretty historic - only game where a team was no-hit and got beat worse was in 1884 (an 18-0 final).

On an up note - steve can stop worrying about the Cubs pythag and expected runs for awhile...

I was wondering last night if this was a record. And then I forgot to look it up. Awesome.

Yeah, the bats may be coming around.

According to Pythagoras, the Cubs won twice last night.

So the peak for the SF Giants in the last 20 years is not any of the three WS wins, but game 5 of 2002WS. That is just perfect 538.

You don't think those 2002/2003 teams were better than any of the WS winning teams? I don't follow the Giants as closely as you obviously, but you'd have a hard time convincing me in a vacuum those 02/03 teams weren't way better.

Hey, after Game 5 in 2002 they were something like 105-71 on the year. That's better than any of their championship seasons.

I'm old fashioned, but to me the point is championships, nice as numbers are. And I was a stat head back when Bill James was mailing his mimeographed newsletter.

( I will admit, my last happy day for eight years was October 22, 2002.)

I wonder how many teams have titles as their "peak." The Royals' "peak" is September 25, 1977. They ended up losing the ALCS to the Yankees that season.

Of course, but this is supposed to be a measure of day-to-day quality, not achievement. Winning a World Series is an achievement - or so I've been told. But it doesn't necessarily mean that the team that wins one season automatically was a "better" team than a team from a different season, especially since that team from 2002 was one win away from a Championship also.

The Cubs' peak over the past 70 years was a day in August 2008. That team dominated the NL in offense and defense, before getting swept in the first round by the Dodgers. It was a better team than the 2003 version, which won 88 games but came within a couple innings of the pennant.

I think the Cubs are on a verge of a new post-1945 peak, though. Over their past 81 regular season games, they have gone 58-23, a 116-win pace.

The most surprising thing about the strong start by the White Sox is that they're doing it despite lacking the strong leadership of Drake LaRoche.

Maybe he needs Zack Cosart's infant son to come in and provide leadership.

Hey, look at that, Googled it and Cozart indeed has a young son:

Mike Trout and Bryce Harper were called up to the majors for good on the same day (though Trout had been a call up the previous year). Which probably has to do with service time and all so isn't a huge coincidence, but still.

Opening Day '95 was delayed right? Because Radke and Pettitte both debuted on April 29th that year and they equal over 100 WAR. Add in Loaiza and Latroy Hawkins, too.
