Re: Barclays Premier League 2015/2016-and other Euro League talk
I gotta say, NBCSN blew it with the coverage, at least for the Arsenal game. They didn't show scores at all, other than halftime. The announcer were unaware of the TOT-NEW score, other than judging the crowd reactions. In the past, they would break in with highlights from other games, and I think they had a Red Zone-esque experiment going on. The first 20 minutes of the Arsenal game desperately needed some excitement or at least a distraction. Both teams stopped playing. Or Arsenal stopped playing and Aston Villa just suck. Nice to see Jack Wilshire in the Starting XI for the first time all season. His run of injuries throughout his career has been astounding. He looked fantastic at times. It'll be interesting to see if he gets game sharpness back for the Euros. Also saw Cazorla finally come back from his knee injury. Kind of strange putting him in for the final game. In a classy gesture, Wenger put Arteta on for the final few minutes, as he is retiring. This was, no surprise, his first game back after a series of leg muscle injuries. Arteta hit a shot off the crossbar that bounced off the keeper's leg and in. Too bad they scored it an own goal. Clearly the right call, but come on!brian wrote:OK didn't see that coming but that was fun. Spurs gonna Spur. Three Newcastle goals in 13 minutes while down a man.
It looks like the suspicious package at Old Trafford was a dummy bomb from a training session that was left behind. What a cluster fuck.

ManU-Bournemouth goes Tuesday at 1pm Manchester time.
ManU could still win 23-0. (19-0 would be too obvious)

Would be awesome if Bournemouth decided to play without a goalie the entire game.

I think that a LVG team could only score 6-7 given that.brian wrote:Would be awesome if Bournemouth decided to play without a goalie the entire game.

I just saw that ManU has scored only 46 goals this year in their 37 games. That's pretty incredible.
Totally Kafkaesque

With the big money TV deal coming in this coming year, teams REALLY want to make it into the Premiership. So pity poor Brighton and Hove Albion. They fell from 2nd to 3rd on the last day of the season to miss the automatic promotion. Then, they lost their opening playoff derby against 6th place Sheffield Wednesday, so they stay in the Championship league.

I knew they were having a relatively down year, but I also knew they were clearly doing better than Chelsea (who I pay the most attention to). I had no idea ManU's offense was so anemic.A_B wrote:It's fucking maddening.Shirley wrote:I just saw that ManU has scored only 46 goals this year in their 37 games. That's pretty incredible.

Need Derby County to beat Hull City 4-0 (or even 4-1 would work) somehow today for the same reason. They've had a tonne of injuries though. Europa League final has been bonkers so far. Liverpool were up 1-0 at the half, and had at least 4 other potential penalties not given. It could easily have been 5-0. Sevilla came out and scored to tie it at one after only 15 seconds in the second half. Everyone is sprinting all over the field, and has been since kickoff. My money is on the fitter team winning this, as the pace has been nuts.

Yep. It really should be 5-3, or maybe 3-3 (considering Sturridge and Coutinho wouldn't have put away all of the ungiven penalties).

How does this work? Do we EPL superfans (1) unite for the outside tourneys for the good of the league, (2) unite minus rivals, a la college basketball conferences in the tourney or (3) root against other EPL teams out of spite / jealousy / fear of a future competitive edge?

This, plus (2), for me anyways. Usually just because I have some level of knowledge of the English team playing whichever game. Also, I generally root for all EPL teams to go far in the cup competitions, if only to wear them out for league competition.Sabo wrote:The answer to these questions will always be "Fuck Liverpool".mister d wrote:How does this work? Saw an article this morning connecting a win today for Liverpool getting them into Champions League and thus giving them a shot at some decent players in the summer transfer market.

Just apply college football rules? You hate your rival school but want the conference to do well in Bowls or out of conference games

Blackpool maybe able to get relegated again and not drop out of the Football League in a few years...plus the proposal could fully kill Scottish Football.

Bringing in Cetic and Rangers comes up every few years. They basically want to be guaranteed into the Premiership, right?

Re: Barclays Premier League 2015/2016-and other Euro League talk
Probably...That would be a tough move as the Prem would stay the same size, the Championship would lose 4 teams. I am guessing to get them in they would either have some one time tournament over the summer (which could be cool) or $$$$$ off some Championship teams to be in the Premier league or the Championship. Have to say Celtic and Rangers would have a hard time staying up in the Premiership (or getting promoted) based on current on field product.A_B wrote:Bringing in Cetic and Rangers comes up every few years. From a $ perspective those are the only two teams that draw attendance in the Scottish leagues.

Barney Ronay in the Guardian.
This is exactly what it felt like when Rooney went on his run to set up Mata on Saturday for the tying goal. It's also why van Gaal is so frustrating. I will miss Johnny Murder, if he's out. I love that huggable Spaniard. He is entitled to feel it could have been handled with more dignity but, equally, it is difficult to argue with United’s decision when Van Gaal’s two-year reign has been synonymous with bland, prosaic football, featuring their worst scoring statistics for more than a quarter of a century and, within the dressing room, a scale of disillusionment that makes it absolutely clear there will be minimal sympathy among the players. Van Gaal has been described among those players as “hard work”. His tactics have been so unpopular that various members of his squad have talked between themselves about openly defying him. It hasn’t reached the point of mutiny, but it has been a close-run thing sometimes. The consensus has been that “it can’t get much worse than it is”.
