Easterbrook? Really? Was Ayn Rand too concise for you?
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Number 45 is Paul Konerko with 439.
Re: Late Spring/Early Summer What are you reading?
I finished the Atlantic book and still wanted to read before falling asleep, it was the first non-History book to come up on the Kindle. Not that great. Haven't decided if I'll finish or move on to something else.L-Jam3 wrote:Easterbrook? Really? Was Ayn Rand too concise for you?

Re: Late Spring/Early Summer What are you reading?
I actually just finished the Pacific book. I liked it, but it seemed a bit more rushed than his previous stuff. I noticed a bunch of stuff that seemed like maybe his editor fell asleep on. Repeating the same idea in a paragraph a page later happened 5-6 times. But that's probably a small nit.
THe last chapter on the growing of the Chinese military was eye-opening for sure.
Bought this in a half-drunken stupor a couple of weeks ago and read the first few pages. I like his writing, so will be a good time killer.

Read it in three days. But, you know.A_B wrote: Bought this in a half-drunken stupor a couple of weeks ago and read the first few pages. I like his writing, so will be a good time killer.
I'm reading this right now, which at 650 pages may take the entire summer.

A gift from the writer I'm mentoring...
You know, the older I get, the less I enjoy ultra-violence. Cool story though.
"Hear The Wind Sing" - his first book and a really quick and enjoyable read.
Sounded really interesting - quirky travel book about the history and current reality of Mormonism - but 90 pages in, I'm glad I got it from the library because the author is really starting to grate on my nerves.

Pruitt, have you read Under The Banner of Heaven? History of Mormonism woven around a story of a double murder performed by some LDS brothers. Quite good.
About to start the chapter on The Beatles (aka The White Album.) Fantastic so far.

Re: Late Spring/Early Summer What are you reading?
I just finished this:
Talks about various music rivalries (Stones vs Beatles/Oasis vs Blur/Pavement vs Smashing Pumpkins). Pretty lightweight, good airplane book.
Am reading this now after hearing the author on Men In Blazers:
Only about 30% in, but so far its pretty good. I can tell I'm going to power through it in a few days.

Decent history of the early days of the craft brew industry. Great bathroom or vacation read, as most of the chapters are 3 or 4 pages, and jumps somewhat chronological between different craft beer pioneers.
Listening to
Pretty good so far. It got bogged down a bit in his family history, particularly discussing his maternal grandparents and his childhood, but now that I am into the early SpaceX years, it's fascinating. Such a strange, unique person. In interviews, I always thought he seemed like a cool guy to hang out with, but I don't have that impression anymore. Just an obsessively focused scientist/engineer/computer geek hellbent on improving the world and oddly has an amazing mind for entrepreneurial endeavors, both monetizing sci-fi ideas and selling his ideas to partners and investors.

Yeah, great book.Rush2112 wrote:Pruitt, have you read Under The Banner of Heaven? History of Mormonism woven around a story of a double murder performed by some LDS brothers. Quite good.
And that started a minor fascination that I have with Mormonism. Unfortunately, "The Lost Book of Mormon" is not all that interesting.

Powered through this about a month ago. Really fun listen, especially since Duchovny did it. Great story, and even better with the little tidbits thrown in for Sox fans.

I mentioned this old book awhile back, and I'm re-reading it again, now. Can't recommend it highly enough!

No spoilers, but I thought it fizzled out at the end. Mildly disappointing.A_B wrote:I downloaded this for pool reading. Really good so far.DaveInSeattle wrote:
