I thought the Sharks might get through without doing anything. They signed Mikkel Boedker for 4 years/$16 mill. Potentially a good deal or a waste. He's super fast, but hasn't been that productive 5x5. Sigh.
Eta: also got defenseman David Schlemko, who can't be any worse than Roman Polak.

Yup. Agreed. All my arguments are nul and void now. And now I hop on the Bergevin is an idiot bandwagon. One of the players that Radulov went out partying with the night before Nashville benched him was a Kostisyn brother that got the boot from Montreal for the same reason. Nothing makes sense anymore.... I can only hope this gamble pays off. Radulov's stats look great in the NHL and the KHL but he's now playing for a defensive minded coach...

Radulov an interesting, not terrible, risk but it also invalidates any non-race arguments regarding Subban. Maybe he was a pain in the ass, maybe some teammates didn't like him, but his race was without any doubt a factor.

$700 million was spend today, a new record. And that's with a flat salary cap.

Kris Russell still not signed yet. Sounds like Toronto offered him 17 mill over 4 years and he rejected it so they signed Polak instead.

Any teams have any room left? He might have to take a big cut.

Won't be a stat team that signs him.

I have no idea what Toronto qualifies as these days. They have a strong stat base but it seems to have little say on the bigger moves.

It's safe to say you got that last part right, when they give a four year deal to a fourth line banger.

I like Matt Martin as a 12th forward, but that deal shows they haven't learned from other teams' mistakes like when the Rangers gave multiple years to Brashear or when the Rangers gave multiple years to Boogaard or when the Rangers gave multiple years to Rupp or when the Rangers gave multiple years to Asham or when the Rangers gave multiple years to Glass.

Not every day you get a (much) better than 50/50 shot at a career defining correct call scenario handed to you. Only downside here is if the NHL boys club hurts his shot with another org.

I think when Subban was rejected a contract and had to sign a short bridge contract, then he proved himself and was given a huge contract, he needed to be made captain. He wasn't captain but not because of anyone else. The Habs went the entire 14/15 season without a captain. There were issues and mistrust from that start.

And unless there's some real behind the scenes shit going on, the issues are 100% on the Habs' side. This dude could have been a godsend for a franchise and a huge star for the entire league and instead his own org actively fought against him. I can't even fathom his impact if he's started out in a (willing) major market.

Speaking of Ranger first round draftees, I see that Dylan McIlrath has a clause in his contract that says he becomes a UFA if he doesn't play in 42 games this season. That seems like it otherwise would have been a high likelihood. But, due to this clause, Vignault might be pressured to use him more? What a clusterfuck.

AV makes a ton of shit decisions with young players, but I guess McIlrath is the one I'll give him the most slack on just because I'm not sure the same player as a 4th round pick ever sees the NHL. There are times where he seems to be alright as a physical, positionally sound D and there are times where Derek Dorsett just torches him to the outside. So I don't know. I'd like to see him inside track at 3RD to start the year and figure it all out because watching upstairs for another year won't do him any good.

Interesting trade. Ottawa is cash poor but has cap room. They get Brassard, who has a lower cash hit than a cap hit. New York is cash rich but tight on the cap. Zibanejad has a higher cash hit than cap hit. So, Ottawa saves cash and gets the older guy who is better right now, while New York gets the cap relief and the better long-term value, given the youth and the better draft pick included.

Seems like it could work out for both teams. Although it seems shocking to ever see the Rangers take the long view.

I've seen this trade described as a "win-now" move by the Sens. If 'win-now' means crawling closer to the 8th spot then maybe. I think it's a net win for the next two years for the Sens but don't see it moving the overall needle much.

I agree in general, but it does have potential. Brassard is a legit top line center, and that's something Ottawa has been lacking. They've got good snipers at wings, but neither Turris or Zibanejad was producing like a top center should. Theoretically, Brassard could really help Bobby Ryan and Stone/Hoffman.

Looks like Roy and Joe Sakic weren't seeing eye to eye. Roy is such a hothead that this isn't really a big surprise that he would quit when he wasn't getting his way. I always figured that at some point he'd take his puck and go home.

Wouldn't work as well for him to say that to Joe, since Sakic was the captain of that Cup-winning team.

I hope he's not coaching LV next year. Don't think someone who cares nothing for puck possession is the right choice for a team building from ground up.
