Dick McAuliffe, from 1968 champion Detroit Tigers, dies at 76

Key member of that Tiger championship team. And he liked to fight.

Longtime Giants third baseman Jim Ray Hart dies at 74

A fixture at third base for five years, career .278 hitter with pop in his best years, feasted on fastballs batting behind Mays, Cepeda and McCovey.

Davvy and Hart were primarily third basemen. Al Gallagher*, Ed Goodson and Darrel Evans need to worry. (I have no idea if these guys are still alive.)

*iirc his full name was Alan Michael Edward George Patrick Henry Gallagher. There is all kinds of nonsense I still remember from eighth grade.

For his work with Talking Heads alone, Bernie Worrell deserves a spot on the pantheon. Add in the PFunk years, and he moves to the very front of the class. Awesome.

I considered giving him his own thread, but I guess he is a little too much in an an old niche for most of you, so I put him here.

Ralph Stanley. One of the pioneering figures in bluegrass/mountain music, in the Stanley Brothers, the Clinch Mountain Boys, and more recently, as a featured performer on the O Brother Where Art Thou movie soundtrack.

"...but we don't want the Irish!"

Does anyone else remember Santa Claus, the Movie? It's completely disappeared from cultural memory, but I remember it being really heavily promoted when it came out in the mid-80s and running on cable TV all the time for a while after. It was like a superhero origin-story take on Santa Claus, where he starts out as a regular guy who gets stranded in the frozen wastes, then gets rescued and made immortal (?) by the elves. There's also a plot where one of the elves who is Dudley Moore goes rogue and goes to work for John Lithgow who is some evil tycoon that wants to corporatize Christmas (glad that didn't happen!)

When I saw this thread on top, I figured Bobby Hutcherson, vibraphonist.

And, John McLaughlin, the TV pundit, (not the musician currently featured in the old timey music thread.)

That's really interesting. I admit to not remember him at all. He came along just before my interest in college hoops caught fire (the Ralph Sampson years). And even then, I was young and really only knew the ACC stars and a few others - Isiah, Mark Aguirre, etc.

Edit - I'm talking about Michael Brooks, not the little red-haired girl.

If anyone ever goes to Santa Rosa, CA, check out the Charles Schulz Museum. It's awesome. The ice rink next to it is outstanding, too.
