Funny coincidence…
I can't remember - didn't you say earlier you were at Candlestick for Game 5 in the 1989 NLCS? I was about ten rows deep in the left field bleachers for that game.
I wasn't at Candlestick for that game like you two were, but I remember it well. Our whole office was watching on TV, and let out a huge collective whoop when Will Clark got that hit.

Coincidentally, I got to attend an earlier game in that series, as part of NL President Bill White's entourage (I am friends with his daughter). We sat in temporary seats that were placed on the field, just down from the first base dugout. Before the game, Will Clark came over and chatted with Bill White (who was seated right in front of me.) It was pretty cool.
When I was in elementary school, one of my friends I played Little League with won a contest in a pack of baseball cards, and got to be the ballboy for the Hall of Fame Game in Cooperstown. The game that year (1991) was between the Giants and Twins, and he said that Will Clark was the least friendly player to him on either team.

He could hit, but he was a dick. They say he has mellowed a bit in retirement. But quite dickish.

At this point I just hope each starter throws 140 pitches.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

I couldn't remember what he called, but I thought it was a clear strike.

Fucking Winters, I remember sitting close and ragging on him at Candlestick. He is much better after a couple of decades experience, but you see how his strike zone can shift within a game. Long been one of my most disliked.

So, the momentum of a dramatic wild card game victory can catapult to a game 1 win against a heavy fav. Good to know.

My MIL is a Rangers fan and I fucking refuse to root for them. She didn't realize the game was in the afternoon yesterday, so I turned it on the 8th when Jays were up 7-0. The first play she sees is the 3-run HR in the 9th and says "man, down 3-0 already...at least it's only the first". She's not bright, but I enjoyed letting her believe that for a second before I asked my wife to tell her the actual score.

A Rude Baseball Tradition
(The statue of) General Sheridan and his horse are located roughly a mile away from Wrigley Field. If you were coming to Wrigley from downtown, and taking Lake Shore Drive northbound, you would get off at Belmont, which would take you right past the General’s likeness. So somebody riding on a team bus must have had an inspiration one day, and thus was born one of the stranger baseball traditions you’ll ever hear about.

…Teams that visit Chicago sometimes leave their mark on the North side by painting their team’s colors onto General Sheridan’s horse. And not the entire horse, just the parts that a gelding has removed. They probably have a ball doing it, too. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist)
video

Duane Kuiper reports, they have been painted orange. I just love stupid shit like this.

Yes, the latest example of I don't know shit. Blach got a uniform, over the two lefty rookie relievers; none of those other guys I named are on the roster tonight.

(but lets see Bochy try to choose the correct dosage of propofol + lidocaine for a 73yo chinese lady with coronary artery disease on a beta-blocker, undergoing upper GI endoscopy.)

Gorkys Hernandez and Kelby Tomlinson are in the starting lineup. And this bullpen. I swear, this is not a reverse hex attempt, but this team is just not good enough to win it all this year. Sure it is possible in a five-game series with some strong starting pitchers, but it is not very likely. Cubs in four.

Now get this Dodger bullshit off my screen. Where the fuck is the game? FX?
